Fr Cowin sends details of the night storage heaters installed in Wymondham Church. The Bishop's mention of the chaplaincy at St Joseph's interests Fr Cowin a lot and he would like to take it up soon. He will say the two masses daily and save the Christian Brothers from having to replace Fr Clare. Having his mother to live with him would not increase his expenses and she is happy to go with him.

Covering letter for the enclosed 1982 financial statement. The parish is overspending and £70 per week for a housekeeper for one priest is excessive. Miss Scarfe, the housekeeper, had intended to retire on her 60th birthday but the death of Fr Chapman had led her to offer to stay on for a couple months. Fr Farrell considers voluntary help will be sufficient. He has asked Peter Wilson to provide forms & leaflets to promote a covenant drive to address the lost revenue. He closes by saying these steps are necessary.
Farrell, H J RevA letter to parishioners setting out the steps taken by Fr Farrell to address the financial problems with the parish: Housekeeper leaving, cancelling Sunday Bulletin, Re-calibration of electricity meters, Hall hire increase, covenants. The reverse side provides an account for the year to 31 December 1982 detailing income and expenditure - showing a deficit of £638
Farrell, H J RevFr Howard reports to the Bishop on the 11 days of lectures, finished on Sunday, at Wymondham. 50 to 150 attending; earnest and sympathetic; some now under instruction; Sunday School to start for 15 children. Benediction created a sensation and the little church was packed. Parson good organiser and very energetic but is impulsive and wild in his statements. They are looking forward to the Bishop visiting for Confirmation.
Howard, Rev (saffron Walden)"Thank you for your recent visit
please find an offering
David"
Requesting faculty to administer Sacrament of Confirmation on Miss Jean Teague. She has been accepted for the Visitation Sisters in Walden , Essex, but, before she can enter the convent on 14 January 1998 she must be confirmed. P.S. The pastoral letter was well received and deeply appreciated, many people asked that he write to thank the Bishop for the words of encouragement.
Jennings, David RevFr Jennings informing the Bishop that RAF Watton is to close and consequently there will not be a chapel for the community there. In considering Mass provision it may require a general review of Masses at Wymondham. Who is responsible for the Ministry of Formation of Priests since the position has been vacant for 3 years?
Jennings, David Rev£40 cheque as an offering for the Bishop's visit to administer Confirmation on 4 December. Families were appreciative of his words at Mass and in conversation afterwards.
Jennings, David RevFr Phillips had bid £500 for one and three quarters of an acre of meadow close to the Church - apparently without gaining Diocesan permission - now bid has transferred to Fr Ketterer. The Post Office's bid has been accepted for £300 for three quarters of an acre. The remainder would be suitable for a church and presbytery. Canon Squirrell knows of this and suggested writing to the Bishop to explain the position. This is a useful bit of land; can he bid around £350 for it? Since the Bishop is in Norwich that week he can come and see it.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Hulme had decided to unpack his books, so Fr Ketterer, to save him work, had to advise him that an appointment would be made soon. Enclosing insurances for both churches and that covering the Housekeeper's property. Should he send on that covering his own property and that in the Presbytery?
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Thanks the Bishop for Fr Hulme's help in the last two weeks. Fr Hulme cycles to visit around the parish. Going to see a section building in Dereham which might be the right size. A £28 cheque from Mgr Tonks (£25 Poor Mission grant and £3 grant for Guild of Ransom) . Did not receive the £3 for the last quarter and the Poor Missions grant was for £12.10.0. Children and congregation looking forward to Bishop's visit in September.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Apologies for delay in writing - a persistent cough, a touch of influenza which is difficult to shake off. Re-roofing materials now available, hope work will be finished in three weeks. RAF Sculthorpe may close down in 1963, so Hunstanton Mission could become a very poor mission. Found Blessed Sacrament Guild cards, no evidence of it being formally erected but would like to start one. Fr Cowin is not strong but the people is East Dereham feel neglected by him. Perhaps Fr Ketterer had spoilt them when he was there. Rather return as resident priest to Dereham. Not claiming the post but considers that a resident priest needs to be there.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Ketterer has not hear the results of the sale but presumes that the "Elms" is now in Diocesan possession - he and his parishioners thank the Bishop for that. He wonders if he should be giving up the leases on Church and Presbytery, or, if the Bishop intends to use the property as his summer residence. Fr Ketterer alludes to several issues but will not bother the Bishop with his "tales of woe", Canon Squirrel will hear them instead.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Covering letter for 1934/5 accounts highlighting a £25 deficit. However Fr Ketterer has a scheme to put it right, but if the Diocese is willing to clear the debt then he'd be happy. Regarding the land - no news yet, not even an acknowledgement of the offer.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Ketterer provides the accounts (set out in the bottom half of the page) for the half year saying it has been a heavy time and no increase in income. With the new house and premises he hopes to have a more favourable balance by October. His deficit is £35.19.9
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Received the cheque to defray his deficit. Has an idea about getting everyone to help as the collections at the two churches are very good. Still no news about the land.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)The financial state of the Mission is such that it may not be meeting its bills by the end of this quarter. Fr Ketterer provides estimates for repairs: chimney re-pointing, making roof watertight. He asks to send a statement at the end of the month to demonstrate his care.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)No decision on the land this week. Currently Post Office has bid for nearly half of the land and the feeling is that people want a new Post Office. Fr Phillips' bid has been dropped without checking that an increased bid would be made. But £700 might be enough to secure the entire site. Asks should he bid the full amount, and, would half the site be enough? This is too good to miss being right in the middle of town. Includes a plan of the land between Middleton Street and Back Lane - identifies a Fives Court in top NE corner.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Fr Ketterer has tenders the bids as advised by Canon Tonks and may yet meet the trustees of the land. As they meet rarely it could be some months' wait.
Ketterer, John Joseph Rev SJ (-1973)Unable to meet the bills for the last quarter. Supporting statement provided. His economy will not help if the congregation cannot do more. Comparing his situation with that of Fr Phillips in the account book, he notes that their expenses are about the same. Hating to admit failure he has to write hoping Canon Tonks will make his "failure - a victory!"
