Suggest Canons Burditt and Frost and Frs Philpot and Wace for Commission on the division of the [Northampton] Diocese.
Downham Market is an issue on which we must stand - "whatever the personal holiness of Ossie (and God alone is the Judge here), he is corrupting a holy thing - and this is the hidden evil." Unwavering leadership is required. Confront Ossie with the obedience he owes, and, that the Pope has formally specified the circumstances in which the rite may be celebrated.
Tony Sketch should be given Downham market as his charge and say a publicised Mass there.

Latin not forbidden - just the Tridentine Rite. Considers much has been left out in the new rite. Quotes Jung: "When people are deprived of a ritual they take refuge in strange pentecostal movements." Has done 180 houses, 25 to go. Taking part in ecumenical activities but draws the line at "charismatic"

Undated/unaddressed letter (assumed to be about 1966) in which Fr Bull encloses a petition to the Bishop from "priests who are disconsolate at the loss of the Latin Mass". He asks for support but recognises that Fr Reeman may be "indifferent of a confirmed vernacularist". Priests included are: Alfred Bull, Ildephonsus Flannery OSB, Bryan Houghton, Quentin Johnston OP, Michael Kennedy, John Ketterer, Bertram Sammons, James Sloan, Joseph Sweeney and George Walker.

"At the invitation of Bishop Alan Hopes, Fr Henry Whisenant, a young diocesan priest of the diocese of East Anglia, has taken up the role as Chaplain for the Extraordinary Form in a house with a privately-owned chapel - Our Lady Immaculate and St Edmund's, Withermarsh Green. It is in the southeast corner of the diocese, south of Ipswich." Story continues.

There are no unauthorised mass centres in this parish. The more ardent followers of the Tridentine Rite either follow Fr Bull or have ceased attending Mass.
Is this request prompted by the Lordships having second thoughts? A change of mind would have much harm: those who accept the changes will feel betrayed and the Tridentinists will feel vindicated. The authority of the Church will again be called into question and appear weak. "The very authority vested in the Holy Father will seem to have moved to the 'Prophet in out Time', Archbishop Lefebvre."

Thanks the Bishop for an enjoyable day. Boshell's muddles on Sunday - hope next time things will be rather more decorous. Cheque for expenses enclosed [manuscript annotation: "£35 cheque"]. Apologises if the Bishop saw a publication extolling Lefebre and attacking the Bishop - "A lunatic woman from Southwold shoves it through my door!" Believes a new candidate for instruction was moved to ask following the Bishop's sermon.
