Walsh, James RevProvides an indication of his complicated arrangements for visiting the area. Apologises for treating everyone shabbily: has to include Gillingham (Mrs Kenyon), Beccles (Fr Campbell), Bungay (Fr MacEvoy), Woodbridge and Wroxham (Traffords) in one visit with no motorcar available.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Bishop Clark is travelling, with Fr Philpot, to Bolivia to visit one of his priests, Fr John Drury. Fr Drury has been in South America for 5 years and the last 12 months have been spent in the foothills of the Andes. He returns to East Anglia in the Autumn and has sent an open letter to all those in the diocese who have helped him with the prayers and alms.
Dowsey, Gary Rev (1955-)He has, this morning, been called to go to Rome to attend the Consistories (on 22nd & 24th). Canon Danell, VG, has full powers for all cases likely to arise. Expect to return before end of June. Pray for Fr Vernon, a young and edifying priest, of Guernsey who is lately deceased.
manuscript annotation [Bishop Grant's hand?]: "Your letter arrived i a box from Arundel today [?]. I cannot get it open before I start. You may wish to open the enclosed. Keep it till I return"
Write on his behalf to the correspondent asking about an Education Committee decision relating to her daughter who after a means test must pay all fees. Bishop p.s.: Pity to bother the Bishop - Fr Brookes should have written to her.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Agrees that it is worth appealing to the full Education Committee. A case of discriminating against these children? CEC to send on relevant information.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Children attending St Benet's Primary School at Beccles from Walberswick and Southwold are asked to contribute £125: beyond their means having already bought school uniform. Can anything be done?
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Refers to Mr Missen's letter [of 30 August 1961]. LEA is within its authority to make the charges (and to pay them if it wishes). However, the Bishop has suggested that the money could be supported from several sources: Parents, Parish, Poor School's Fund, Catholic Education Council.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Congratulating Mr Loftus on the stand he is taking. Asks if he is aware of the Ministry of Education's manual upon which LEAs base their policy. Sends a copy. Reminding the Bishop of his offer of assistance. CEC grants only made once a tear in June.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Bishop has asked him to respond. Request information about the children for when he approaches Mr Missen, the Chief Education Officer.

Responding to a request form canon Brewer regarding examples of local authorities assisting/paying for school fares for primary children to Catholic schools - enclosed [not present].

UnknownStill worth contacting the Education Committee with a view to getting them to reconsider/help towards the increase in travel costs.
Loftus, Nicholas MrFr Rudd showed him the correspondence and he is glad to hear the Bishop thinks the case will qualify for support. In the meantime Mr Loftus will press the Education Committee on the matter of these costs.
Loftus, Nicholas Mr"The Norwich Pax et Bonum Franciscan Fraternity held a farewell celebration this week for Brother Robert Hardie. Robert is emigrating to New Zealand with his wife Clare and spaniel Holly. He originally served the Franciscan community in the south-west region. Since his profession 30 years ago he has held positions not only at local level in Norwich, but also at regional and national levels." Story continues.

Mr Loftus' letter was considered by the sub-committee. Unable to accept responsibility for the additional cost of £125. This decision will be forwarded to the main committee on 28 November.
East Suffolk CCCatholic Education Commission (CEC) application form refers. The LEA refuses a fare grant for Downham Market children as they travel more than 5 miles (i.e. 13 and 16 miles). Is there anything the Diocesan Schools Commission can do?
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Good to reply directly to Mr Smith of King's Lynn.
Suggested removing the reference to financial commitments in the Diocese. Corby as a singular concern to the Commission is not true as we are only paying off the interest part of its loan. The policy is to secure Maintained education for all children where possible. The difficulty at King's Lynn is the distance travelled by the children - over 16 miles in some cases. A suggestion of using Hostels in Norwich has been considered - do you have any view of progress being made elsewhere in this approach?
