Insert - [folded so difficult to read all the words] asking for extra exertions by the clergy for the annual collection for the EDF [Education Development Fund] which is currently languishing through diminishing and inadequate donations.

Novice Master at Manresa House [Jesuit house, Birmingham] suggested the approach regarding Cyril Banham training to become a secular priest in this Diocese. Always wanted to become a priest but was delayed following an operation in 1914 for empyema. Will support the cost of the training. Cyril saw Canon Drake recently on this matter.
Banham, Frederick E"Native" clergy are an advantage as they know the area and its people. Suggest one of three seminaries for Cyril: St Edmund's in Ware, St Mary's Oscott and Ushaw College. £100 per annum premium at each. Ask Cyril to forward references.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Expressing his long felt desire to become a priest and awaits the time when he will receive the greatest dignity at the hands of his lordship.
Banham, Cyril Norbert Rev (1887-1963)Suggests that Cyril starts at St Edmunds in Ware as it is within easy distance and on the "system" [train line?]. He will need good and plentiful food. Perhaps he will finish his training in Rome.
Banham, Frederick EHaving tried hard to improve his report, he was shocked to receive the Bishop's letter. In the four years at college he has not been able to complete any of them them due to illness: broken collar bone, appendicitis, rupture. He has a continuing desire to be a priest and will get there and asks for another chance unless the Bishop sees fit to dismiss him - "even though I am and know below the average in brains".
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Am giving you this next term as your final chance to do better write [?] get a better report. Ap 23/26."
Questions for the Bishop:
- Require permission to receive converts?
- Timing issues regarding "40 Hours"
- 15 year-old boy desires to be a secular priest. Kevin Jones, son of the valet for Hamilton Bunbury. Time to send him to a school. What to do?
- Banham trust - money owing from Bishop?
- Matrimonial papers?
manuscript annotation:
"1. Yes, sent 6 forms; 2. Say Mass of St Gregory with [illegible] Bl. Sac. "sub uno conclussione". 3. Sent Educ. Student form to be filled up. 4. I know; we love having trouble with the Income Tax people; will send you the returned income tax when it comes. 5. Not heard of [illegible] from Rome. Feb 25/27."
Suggest Wednesday July 2nd - arriving on the day as have another appointment in the area. Sorry to hear about Dr Helsham, his Jesuit brother gave a poor account of it. Cyril Banham is doing well - have to curb his enthusiasm to keep him within his health compass.
