Quite willing to take this applicant for the Permanent Diaconate. However, he is of a mind that all applicants should take a proper course of formation and training. The Southwark course is full and it is too late to add this candidate onto the course.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Surprised the Cardinal revealed all - picked up by Catholic Herald and the Telegraph - have since turned down an invitation to speak on Radio 4. Cormac has been in contact. Major hurdles itemised by Bishop Clark in respect to the nature of the ministry of married (and elderly/pensionable) Anglican Clergy within the Catholic Church; managing the sceptics in Rome notwithstanding some Bishops already have candidates in training; use of a Canon Lawyer (Peter Smith ideal). Suggests a structure to clarify lines of responsibility, if the post holders are agreed. Started moving personal effects in to the retirement bungalow - "I wonder whether my hunch will be verified/vindicated."

CorrespondentApologises for handwritten letter - no typewriter - will get a PC in due course with money from Thetford. Delay in writing due to high number of deaths, funerals and thoughts over serious repairs needed by the presbytery, and that there is no money. So will be in debt to the diocese straightaway. Everyone very kind and welcoming.Placing the Diaconate Formation under the Vocations umbrella - need to talk to Ian Hatfield about what is involved. Idea's about a Promoter for Vocations - will be going to Oscott, may get ideas there. DPC on Saturday and Fr Tony's Induction of Friday.

Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Speaking with Philip Shryane last week, they felt there is a need for in-service training for Diocesan deacons to improve communication/preaching skills. Also suggests that more time be made available for chaplains at Notre Dame School and the Norfolk and Norwich hospital - there is need to accommodate the demands of both institutions. He and "Sean" are settling in well at Yarmouth. Sean will make a fine priest, is a good companion and has done well in his Rome exam.

Having tried hard to improve his report, he was shocked to receive the Bishop's letter. In the four years at college he has not been able to complete any of them them due to illness: broken collar bone, appendicitis, rupture. He has a continuing desire to be a priest and will get there and asks for another chance unless the Bishop sees fit to dismiss him - "even though I am and know below the average in brains".
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Am giving you this next term as your final chance to do better write [?] get a better report. Ap 23/26."
