Part of Our Lady of Good Counsel and St Peter Parish, March

Having delivered a Parish Renewal in March. Fr Matthews writes to the Bishop about the strengths of Fr J Smith. "..he inherited a practically defunct parish and a thoroughly wretched presbytery and in a year he has revitalized the one spiritually and repaired the other ...". "a priestly priest". Fr Matthews philosophy is to counter often bad news by ensuring that Bishops know about the good men in their Diocese and writes to do just that. Final remark is that Fr Smith regards the Bishop as a fine man and administrator but especially as being "balanced".

Part of Our Lady of Good Counsel and St Peter Parish, March

Worried that Fr Smith may move on in Sept 1980. He has overcome many trials and started several organisation within March: SVP, Life, Legion f Mary, Knights St Columba; where one, UCM existed for 10 years. If the Sisters of FFM come then he should stay to help keep the parish moving.
Bishop replies (XEA6 file 4 P13) that whilst he likes to leave priests in their parish, Fr Smith wants to move, and he must do his best by the priests he has. April 1980: confirmation that the Sisters are coming.
