Bishop had an enjoyable visitation and savoured the badinage between them. Obvious that Papworth & St Ives love you and cherish your pastoral care. Some points in a separate document included in the letter [see below]. Glad Fr Kerby has £700 of Travel Vouchers for his next foray into Eastern Europe and beyond. Bishop asks Fr Kerby to look after himself more - age requires more care in regular food and sleep. Thank Ann K for excellent and succulent meals.
Visitation St Ives 23/24 May 1992
Many positive points, not least the organist. Church well groomed even if the predilection for statues is apparent. But points to consider:
1,. congregation to put their own breads into the ciborium. Tabernacle hosts reserved for the exception

            1. Find chalices for the Precious Blood - better than glasses - a generous donor?
            2. Altar server shortage. Not suggesting using girls but let it be known that he no longer feels they can be excluded.
            3. nerves happen but readings should be at a good even pace with good enunciation
            4. Sacristy very small - any way of using the rooms between church and presbytery?

Sacrament of Reconciliation advice - "it is the sin that needs (and can be) to be absolved rather than release from the penalty incurred. Make a prudent judgement and decide whether the penitent has really incurred the 'latae sententiae'".
The visitation is in danger of being overloaded - whilst the Bishop is not allergic to work the programme is not without confusion - can Fr Kerby puzzle out a less complicated agenda for his Bishop?!

Commenting on the recent visitation - thanking Fr Kerby for his kind letter and generous offering. Enjoyable visit to St Ives with its warmth of welcome. Gladdens the heart of a Bishop to visit such a thriving community in which so many are giving generously of their time and talents for the good of each other and the parish as a whole. Wishes Fr Kerby a fruitful, enjoyable and safe trip to India next month.

"You have me by the hip" when you quote the last time I came - but he was 3 years younger then. Not really the point. This is now a protracted Confirmation (administration of) which is not really what a Bishop's visitation is about. "You see, I like visiting St Ives - but FOUR confirmations!!!"
manuscript annotation: asking how necessary is it to accommodate all the relatives threatening to descend on St Ives? To late to do anything "effective" but think on it, It will almost certainly be another Bishop next time (I shall miss the occasion!)

Thanks for the kind letter and generous cheque. Bishop thoroughly enjoyed the Visitation and was heartened by the number of Confirmations and full attendance at the Masses. Thanks Fr Kerby for all he has done for so many years at the parish. Thank Elizabeth and Ann for their parish work and hospitality over the weekend. Excellent news that the new hall can now go ahead, please convey gratitude to Daphne Reid and all who have helped to bring this about.

Bishop mentions an "unnecessary" collision which the insurers could regard as a write-off in spite of engine, transmission, etc. being unaffected. Wonderful visit with a full timetable. Parish community seems in good shape. Look after the house - the bathroom needs attention (could easily become a tip!). Grateful that Fr Kerby is to take Michael Stapleford this Summer as his pastoral director advises that he needs Catholic pastoral experience. Bishop will see Fr Kerby tomorrow.

Fr Kerby acknowledges the Bishop's permission to give a non-Catholic bride Holy Communion. However, her appreciation is that this is a solemn act but that the bread remains bread and is representative. In the light of this Fr Kerby says that the bride is content to receive "holy communion" from her father (a vicar) whilst the bridegroom receives Holy Communion from Fr Kerby. He awaits the Bishop's decision.
On the Bishop's Visitation at the end of May, will he confirm a few youngsters at Papworth and Willingham as well as at St Ives? It would be an encouragement to both small congregations.

"La veuve" is grateful for the opportunity to speak to the Bishop and that he said Mass for her husband.
Insurance form being sent to Fr Kerby. Mechanic inspected the damage as written a report. New door & rear panel to cost £5-600 with work charges being a further £5-600. Otherwise still drivable, but the door-post saved all from more serious damage. Cheque enclose and will see the Bishop tomorrow in Bury.

Fr Kerby checked the Code and it is all clear now. Sorry that the Bishop finds the programme rather heavy - it is the same as the last time he came. The reason is the lack of space. 11am Mass is normally full and with the Confirmands and family and friends ... Fr Kerby explains the issues which lead to the programme being constructed this way. He considers the arrangements to be the best in the circumstances and hopes the Bishop will accept them.
p.s. Anne Kellock is providing the meals.

Fr Kerby provides a full & detailed list of Mass times over the two days for the visitation on 11-13 October 1996.
(manuscript annotation - crossing out 12/10/96: 4.15 Confessions; 13/10/96: 4.30pm Mass and 6pm Benediction; "leave after Lunch"). Two parishioners are recent converts and would like the Bishop to confirm them. Fr Kerby will be saying 6.30 Mass at Royal Anglian Regiment, Oakington. Mr & Mrs Barker have been Parish Treasurer and Secretary respectively and worked for the parish for many years. Fr Kerby asks to a Diocesan Medal for them both.
The Pare Pio group in Papworth would like the Bishop to endorse their foundation certificate to be officially recognised.

p.s Deacon Gardner' s anniversary occurs on Monday 29 May - could the Bishop stay on and celebrate 10am Mass and give la veuve [sic] great satisfaction?

Fr Nesden nominating 3 parishioners for the Bene Merenti Medal: Mrs Dorothy Barton (St Ives) , Mr Edward Dorney (St Ives), Mr Bernard Rodgers (Papworth). All have given loyal service for at least 25 years and still doing so.
This is the 75th Anniversary of the opening of this church and presumably the foundation of the parish but there do not appear to be any records. Perhaps the Bishop would take this into account on his visitation on weekend of 24th April. Fr Nesden would like a concelebrated Mass with Deanery clergy and the Mayor attending.
