Summarising correspondence between him and Mgr Stark regarding the content of a proposed letter head for use on Shrine communications. The use of the phrase "Roman Catholic" may not be theologically acceptable for many, in relation to the Shrine, but without it inter-communion may happen by accident - so its use is necessary for avoidance of doubt.

Intends to make his pilgrimage to the ancient site of the shrine of Our Ladye [sic] ofWalsingham. As the Slipper Chapel is now diocesan property can he have permission to say private mass there, will also take a small Altar statue.

He acknowledges the bishop refusal to grant his request. Facts are: he makes a pilgrimage to Walsingham every year and occasionally goes on to Kong's Lynn where Fr Stokes kindly allows him to say mass at the shrine. Cannot understand why it is wrong to visit the ancient site at Walsingham and kneel where hundreds of our forefathers went. He is distressed that there will soon be no catholic presence at Walsingham once the present provost Vicar leaves or dies.

Requests faculties for reception of two converts. Considering an appeal to create a memorial to Canon Eeles - perhaps a stone High Altar. When in Rome in May,may try to obtain indulgences for those who visit the shrine. The lamps at the shrine are a heavy cost to the mission.

Whilst the director (Fr Williams) has day-to-day responsibility for the Shrine, overall responsibility resides with Bishop Smith. Fr Williams will ensure all views expressed on the Walsingham window are represented at the Historic Churches Committee (HCC) meeting chaired by Mr Limentani next week. Extensive research undertaken for the Shrine about the Webb window which will feed into the decision. Meet to discuss the point on architecture (and liturgy)?

After discussing Fr Birch's letter of 5 October with Mgr McBride, they have some proposals. First observations:

              1. financing of Spiritual and Commercial to be kept separate
              2. the two above are interdependent so any surplus from one should not be spent if the other is in deficit
              3. Money lent by the Diocese for buildings/repairs must be repaid when they are sold
              4. Establish £30,000 working capital to carry it through the Winter
              5. You say the Spiritual side will pay for itself
              6. Previously approved capital projects will be paid by the Diocese on production of an architect's certificate
              7. Year end should be brought forward to 30 November
              8. Shrine Council needs an accurate financial picture; bank statements to be submitted to them each month
                Proposals for Winter:
              9. (See attached schedule) Sale of property proceeds (£85,000) will be received by the Diocese and credited to the commercial side
              10. Itemised expenditure of £85,000
              11. Walsingham Building Fund expected stand at a net of £40,000
                1. will be used to pay new chapel costs, balance of Diocesan Loan, cost of Administrator's office at the Shrine
              12. By next Autumn there will be sufficient to repair Slipper Chapel roof
              13. Insurance: Except for Falcon House all properties in the village will be regarded as Commercial and those at the Slipper Chapel as Spiritual
p.s. the Diocese will provide a cash loan for the purchase of a new car for the Administrator.

[undated] Article by Donald Hilton. "The reader's columns of the EDP have shown that some Protestants were not only unenthusiastic about the visit but were critical that any Free Church minister should be involved." A shrine to Our Lady in Hunstanton in North West Norfolk has been restored and consecrated in memory of Polish troops who helped defend the county from the threat of invasion during the Second World War. When The Church of Our Lady and St Edmund in Hunstanton was built in 1905, it was no larger than a Lady Chapel and could only seat a few people. In 1940, a unit of Polish soldiers, billeted at nearby Heacham, came to man an armoured train that protected the coast as far as King's Lynn. They built an altar and a shrine in the garden and outdoor services were held. Expansion of the church in the 1950s lead to the demolition of the shrine and altar. A Polish lady parishioner, with the support of the Polish and parish communities, decided to rebuild the shrine in the grounds of the Church to commemorate all the troops.
