Starting his fourth year at Seminary, he is writing to let the Bishop know how he is getting on. Has corresponded with Mr Tuck about his son preparing to send his son to seminary. His brother, Leonard and Patrick Trunks return to Oakamoor last Thursday. Tomlinson and Gordon will travel from London on 30th to be in time for the "Entree on 1st October. When he returns to Beaupréau he hopes to work with the second form.

Gifford Hall was leased for two years (to June 1844) with the purpose of establishing an ecclesiastical seminary. "I did expect, in this rather spirited step, to have been supported and encouraged so far as to be enabled to erect in Suffolk something of a regular building suitable for our Seminary purposes. "I am sorry to have to state (absit verbo invidia) [the word envyis absent] that my expectations have been disappointed, and I must be content with less than I expected." He will therefore set up in Northampton instead - requires £1000 which must be possible from those in 9 counties.

Card from Leicester to confirm supply arrangements. Discussion about the progress of "Young Farr" a boy currently at Glossop and doing very well. He is to be offered an additional year for Higher Studies which will be a bridge to Seminary. Reminds the bishop of his promise to attend the pilgrimage and preach - "I am trying as far as possible, while the older generation are alive in this parish, to get preachers for the pilgrimage who knew the Shrine in its earliest days. A little ancient history too from Authority might help to disillusion our rivals at Sudbury, Middlesex."
Stokes, Edmund Harold Rev (-1961)Learnt yesterday that Fr d'Amberger did meet Dr Keating having met previously when Fr d'Amberger was studying History at Cambridge. Arthur Tomlinson is back from seminary and the Superior has written (quoted two paragraphs in French) to say that Arthur has had a good year in the seminary and he hopes he will return to join the seminarians of his age. The Superior is happy to send this as a testimonial.

E Myers, President, St Edmund's College, Ware: Mr Banham and his son Cyril spend the weekend at the College. Needs to revise much of his Latin. Has been at home for 5 years and is clearly very delicate but with care should be able to get along. Subject to the doctor's opinion, suggested he come in a month's time. Enclosure - refers to the father's letter which explains the situation but requested its return, hence not present.
