Going to Rome this weekend. Enjoyed the visitation - rather hectic but fruitful.
Pleased to see the staff at St Martha's and note their moral is low; understand about the lack of a headmaster. Will see if there is anything that can be done at diocesan level.

UnknownDraft letter believed to be from Bishop Leo Parker to the SJ Provincial [Terence Corrigan?].
Having to make a submission on Diocesan properties to the Charity Commission before the end of March to meet the needs of the new Charities Act. No records of what the Society hold. Caister Chapel and cemetery seem to be leasehold and not freehold. Also who are the owners of St Mary's parochial school? Need information from the Society by return. The Diocesan solicitors are Witham, Weld and Co of 11 Ashby Place.
The school might use the parish room as an extra classroom. Bishop acknowledges that in hoping to achieve a transferred school at St Edmunds to replace St Mary's not enough thought is being given to the needs of the parish. Could be resolved with a little goodwill on both sides?
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)An appeal for the annual collection for the Catholic Poor School committee.
Wareing, William Rev (1791-1865)An appeal contributions from the Faithful. "The paucity of our numbers, and the diminished and diminishing means of the few among us who formerly rendered us assistance, make it prudent and necessary in me to give up the idea of founding new missions, or undertaking the erection of large chapels." School of Divinity established with six; Seminary of St Felix resuscitation discontinued.
Wareing, William Rev (1791-1865)Bishop Peter Collins met with lay chaplains to Diocese of East Anglia Catholic secondary schools..." story continues.

6 paragraphs being notes on a meeting held between Fr Brewer and Fr Trafford:
- Agreement on Fr Trafford's view - school managers need to take a new line for the school; taking into account Diocesan policy and needs for a future secondary and grammar school
- Number to not exceed 110 - can be maintained by the admission of non-catholic pupils. This will justify 4 teachers
- Managers exercise admission of pupils through the Parish Priest.
- No need for grading of the school
- LEA to take initiative regarding alterations to buildings
- Canon Brewer to take up points 4 & 5 with LEA as necessary.
Image - caption: "The Bishop of East Anglia, the Rt Rev Peter Smith, cuts first sod of new Catholic primary school to be built at Gorleston."
The £1 million development of a new school to replace St Mary's School starts with the Bishop lifting the first sod from the ground. Head teacher, Peter Cleary, and the chairman of board of governors, John Holmes, observe with contractors. Albion Road site future uncertain as permission to develop it has been refused.
Manuscript annotation: Speech bubble from Bishop "Right! That's the last we'll see of Alan. Now where do you want the time capsule buried?"
Need to see Fr Webb at Yarmouth to talk about these proposals and the intent to build an RC school in Gorleston. Provides advice on approach to take before the meeting with Ministry of Education and offers to accompany Fr Innes to their offices o 13th January.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Long talk with Fr Trafford about affairs at Beccles school. Doubtful that the Ministry will allow work to proceed as the national economy cannot yet afford it and other priorities exist. Fr Trafford is already approaching the LEA about a teacher appointment.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Policy in the matter of parental choice in schools is available from HMSO. Means tests will apply when that choice involves an independent school. Fortunate that the Local Authority has agreed to meet some of the costs. The Bishop does not wish to be burdened by such letters when the correct approach is via the parish priest. Need to convince the LEA that the local school cannot meet the daughter's educational needs.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Copy enclosed of a letter to the Ministry stating the approval given in May. Suggest Fr Brookes write and state that the Instruments of Management for the school (same up and down the country) has been agreed. The Bishop and the Abbot will appoint four managers after sealing the Instruments of Management.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Local Authority should be urged to agree, prioritise and address the permanent alterations to the school. Chasing up "Aided status" notification, "Instrument of Management" and "Rules of Management. These need to be vetted by the [diocesan] legal department. Asking this because West Suffolk have produced, sealed and completed documents without reference to us, hence requiring steps to correct.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Will visit and talk things over. Hold the meeting with the school managers and obtain the resolution to apply for Aided status. Complete Form 18 to show ability and willingness to meet share of costs for the school. Will call at Bungay too, not having heard from them.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Unidentified [possibly Canon Brewer - see letter dated 16 Nov 1949]: Looked into the matter. Did the authority refused to allow the children to go to a Catholic school? Procedure is to admit the children to the school, then inform the Ipswich Education Authority. They cannot refuse. But the fares will have to be paid by parents, parish or Catholic Education Council.
