Glad that the convent question is settled. Got the statistics, but not the Retreat Form. Will join the procession but can you not get a more brilliant speaker than himself? Congregation in Rome very particular about chapel room.

Asking Mgr Godfrey to help Commander & Mrs Eyre Huddleston who are spending Easter in Rome and would like to attend Holy Father's Mass. Explains they are of Sawston Hall, one of the old English Catholic houses where Mass was said during the Penal Days. Mrs Eyre Huddleston is the daughter of Sir Edward ad Lady Philippa Stewart (niece of the late Duke of Norfolk). Both are fine Catholics. He says he has given them a letter of introduction.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Letter to introduce Commander & Mrs Eyre Huddleston who are spending Easter in Rome and would like to attend Holy Father's private Mass. "I am sure you will do what you can, as the Verabile (sic) always does, to help distinguished Englishment who do their duty in Rome."
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)"From Dialogue to Communion" Symposium at Sant'Anselmo [Monastery, Rome, Italy]. Congar and Vagaggini gave straight forward replies to the question discussed in Bishop Butler's paper on koinonia; their replies may help in ARCIC.
Have not yet read the revised version on Mixed Marriages, but would contest any attempt to make it a publication of ARC.
Returned from Canberra, Australia, after heading up the Vatican delegation for VII Assembly of the World Council of Churches - chaotic but epic. Thanks the Cardinal for his leadership in the debate on the Gulf Crisis.
Francis Selman: happy for the Cardinal to see him (provides a short pen picture) - thought he had settled at Quidenham - but that is obviously not the case.
Fr Andrew Morley at Dersingham: Asks the Cardinal to withdraw him as he has caused offence and gone to the provincial press.
Has just received a reply from Cardinal Knox to his letter dated 9 October 1979.
Discouraging - appreciate the Cardinal Hume's counsel. The inability to give General Absolution at time of pilgrimage is not a disaster - but the letter shows an addiction to strict and literal interpretation of the norms.
He has instructed his clergy that in real necessity they are authorised to administer GA (the kind of necessity the Congregation does not admit!) and inform him after the fact. But this has been rarely used and with no criticisms
Bishop Clark thinks that something has "leaked".
Thanks for the account of your stewardship - you are happy in Beccles, I think. Share some anxieties but not convinced of your conclusions. Off to Rome, November before can look in on you.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Fine about Rome trip. Finances highly credible - but carry on with the weekly £15 form the Sick Clergy Fund (explain more when we meet). Uncle situation - good for a time but eventually he will need proper care.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop agrees with Fr John Harvey, saying that after The National Pilgrimage when he gave a General Absolution he was "invited" to Rome. He fought his corner, giving a context similar to that which Fr Harvey had described, but Cardinal Knox, tho' gracious, stuck to the letter of the law. The only practical solution is to ask pilgrims to go to confession prior to going on a pilgrimage to Walsingham.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Three days in Rome as Co-Moderator of the Joint Working Group (between the Holy See and the World Council of Churches [WCC]). Summary of discussion with Bishop Duprey: Cardinal Hume handled the matter admirably; not to support the "Papua New Guinea Solution" (Archivist would not let Bishop Clark look at the Papua New Guinea file); hostile to Conditional Ordination; explore Supplemental Ordination?; As CDF [The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Curia, Vatican] did not accept ARCIC approach to Apostolic Succession there may be a problem.

Bishop of the Diocese [Northampton]
He has, this morning, been called to go to Rome to attend the Consistories (on 22nd & 24th). Canon Danell, VG, has full powers for all cases likely to arise. Expect to return before end of June. Pray for Fr Vernon, a young and edifying priest, of Guernsey who is lately deceased.
manuscript annotation [Bishop Grant's hand?]: "Your letter arrived i a box from Arundel today [?]. I cannot get it open before I start. You may wish to open the enclosed. Keep it till I return"
Compliments slip: Bishop Secretary: "Tony Sketch will arrange to deliver the enclosed - less the carbon - to all Downham Market parishioners when he distributes his invitations to the real Mass."
Page 1: letter to the congregation at Downham Market - explaining, now that the legal procedure is over, the sorrow he feels in acting against Fr Baker. Obedience to the Holy Father means accepting the changes away from the Tridentine Mass. Expects support for Fr Sketch. Notes of explanation included.
Page 2-3: Notes headed: "1. Your present position"; "2. The Missal of Pope Paul VI"; "3. The Bishop's dealings with Fr Baker"
Covering letter for Decree; Fr Baker has the right to appeal to Rome.
Grant, Charles Alexander Rev LCL BA (1906-1989)Correspondence between Bishop Murphy-O'Connor and Rome (Doctrine of Faith) regarding Eucharistic celebration at Walsingham. Suggests they might discuss when at the Bishop's meeting.
Murphy-O'Connor, Cormac Rev (1932-2017)1st draft of a letter to Cardinal Simeoni (Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Propagation of the Faith) regarding an approval to assign a priest to Beccles from the Benedictine Order which has a base at nearby by Bungay.
At the base of the second side, a manuscript amendment instruction [by the Bishop?]: "(1) you will omit the 'm' in both places will you?"
Translation from the Latin text:
Blessing of the enclosed image by his Holiness chosen by His Eminence for the restoration of the ancient Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in King's Lynn, Requested by Fr Philip Fletcher (Master of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Ranson) and Fr George Wrigglesworth.
Approved and praise the chosen Icon of the Holy Mother of God, at an audience with Leo XIII on 6 February 1897
Signed by the Cardinal Vicar of [Rome]
endorsed by Arthur, Bishop of Northampton on 22 February 1897
Final [? not fully dated] draft of a letter to Cardinal Simeoni (Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Propagation of the Faith) regarding an approval to assign a priest to Beccles (4,000 inhabitants) from the Benedictine Order which has a base at nearby by Bungay.
Riddell, Arthur George Rev (1836-1907)Ordination applicants need to be in full communion for a while before Rome considers them. Outstanding matter needs to be addressed prior to the other becoming a candidate. Need to consider the reader's future role carefully. Chris Toller will be in touch with Paul Hirons about the bungalow soon.
