Surprised the Cardinal revealed all - picked up by Catholic Herald and the Telegraph - have since turned down an invitation to speak on Radio 4. Cormac has been in contact. Major hurdles itemised by Bishop Clark in respect to the nature of the ministry of married (and elderly/pensionable) Anglican Clergy within the Catholic Church; managing the sceptics in Rome notwithstanding some Bishops already have candidates in training; use of a Canon Lawyer (Peter Smith ideal). Suggests a structure to clarify lines of responsibility, if the post holders are agreed. Started moving personal effects in to the retirement bungalow - "I wonder whether my hunch will be verified/vindicated."

Refers to a "fruitful" meeting held between the Bishop and Fr Barker who has written about the ideas discussed and the conclusions reached. He leaves a space for a Job Description of Director. Fr Birch quotes from his report to the Executive Committee on 28 July. A completed contract would help discussion with the Superior General when he comes. "If we can also establish the financial competence of the Director, it would avoid any possibility of my overstepping the mark."

Fr Birch is having problems with the changes in the organisation and management of the Shrine - most he agrees with but believes there is a lack of clarity or understanding of his role as Director and its limits. Suggests a need for a Job Description for the role of Director at the Shrine.

Fr Birch still waiting for a reply from Mgr McBride to his letter of November 6th. Is irritated by Mgr McBride's semi-public joking "Well, what have you done recently that you should have consulted me about?". Fr Birch is asking for guidance what he can and cannot do regarding financial matters, ecumenical decisions, public exposure, VIP invitations. He asks for a clear understanding of the role of the Director in the life and future of the Shrine. Quoting Mgr McBride "... had exceeded the day to day administration of the Shrine" which had left Fr Birch flabbergasted because it was the first indication of a limit to his activity. He asks that a response be made in writing.
