An obligation to say weekly Mass at Ramsey could be reduced to quarterly, in meantime, could offer intention at March instead. What was the value & make of Fr Dunleavy's car which Diocese sent £52 for? Priest can take £1 per week from rents due from cottages. Amendment to wording of faculty (Matriomonia valide assistendi in missione sen districtum cui addictus es"). Other men as regarded as curates. Sent copy of response to congregation's appeal to keep Fr Dunleavy - what is their state now?

Outlines rent, conditions, charges for hirer for Canon Tonks with respect to Crockerhill.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Canon Gerard Collins writes: Lease with Mr Stebbings. Need clarity from Fr Mossey over the intention of the tenant to pay extra rent for a renewal? Bishop concerned that offering an additional seven years at £50 per year may not be best value for money in the long term. Furthermore better not to commit when the future of Halesworth is not clear. But if Stebbings threatens to clear out then, provided the Chapter agreed, the Bishop would accept the seven years.
Typed annotation: Addressed to John [Fr Mossey] from Bill [Canon Hunting] Sending the letter onwards (please return) to save writing. Questions lease value and term - £1 p.w for a shop is not a lot.
Relating to the March Presbytery and rental properties: Letters from Fr W Clare (7), Fr L Allen(7), Canon Tonks(1), GF Stokes(1), AP Peacock(1), Ollard(2); Postcard from Fr Clare; Bills/invoices (15) from Insurance Co., Utilities & Councils; Agreements for construction and rent; Rent Account (1910 & 1911); Inventory (1941 - Fr Mortimer J Hanagan); Inventory (1948 - Rev W J Gaffney); Fr Gerard Collins to Bishop (Parker) - his critical survey of Chatteris house (11-7-1953).
Allen, Louis Rev (-1931)Inspection of the properties and spoken to tenants. His recommendations follow:
1 Friday Market - deathwatch beetle needs addressing; rent is £6/week sent to Mgr Hulme monthly; tenant accepts rent is low and agreed to a Rent officer setting a fair rent
2 Friday Market - rent of £60/calendar month paid to Mgr Hulme - suggest review rent every two years
3 Friday Market - ground floor tenant family only occasionally there; poor condition; Upper flat - tenant works at the Shrine but unable to speak to him as he was away in London
4 Friday Market - 79 year old tenant lived there since a girl; pays £5/week. She agrees the rent is ridiculously low for a 5 bedroom house; wants to stay for rest of her life; suggest obtaining a fair rent
Uncertain about what to do about the house [Crockerhill?]. Not allowed to go in, nor knows the position on letting it. Will try to get £80 rent. Fr Davidson is aware Mrs Simpson has written to the Bishop but has had nothing to do with it. It will be an asset to the parish. He does not know the state of the place which has been vacant for a year.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAMrs Hutchinson decided not to rent Crockerhill. Rev Mother has provided an estimate for using it as a Catholic Hostel. She would be low risk. Fr Davidson might try that himself for French or other foreign students.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAMr Hutchinson will write soon - very interested in the house - the right sort of people. Want to rent for a year with an option for 3 years or 7 years or more. Wish to lay on gas and build a garage. Rent £80. "You must admit I acted speedily"
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAPays rent to Mr James Whitaker in Tipperary via a Mr Pratt in King's Lynn
Macdonald, Stodart RevGlad to receive approval for his campaign. No problem expected with letting the bungalow - from July it is let to a retired recent convert, a headmistress. She is looking after her sister, a protestant, there.
Malone, John F Rev (-1970)Field up for re-rental and will bring in £8 per year. However, fences in very poor state and has spoken with Canon Tonks about funding their replacement - otherwise the renter will not sign. Many Happy Returns for tomorrow.

Thanks the Bishop for authorising his appeals; explains costs associated with appeals can outweigh income from them. £100 only in Church Fund. Beautiful site (paid for by the Benefactress, who built Lowestoft Church); 60 in congregation (from 12/15 at start); decent chapel in town with a fair rent - need a priest's house more than a church. The wooden chapel from Birmingham suggested by the Bishop would be too small to accommodate 150-200 in Summer.
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Awaiting details from Miss Auld's will. Spending too much on the house will attract rates higher than current rent. The Poor Mission Fund payments of £25 per year are to be discontinued. A new church will do much good, as the Bishop said at the Norwich Congress "Englishmen will not go for their religion to a barn".
St Leger Mason, Henry Patrick Rev (-1940)Has discussed the situation with Mr Stebbings - summarises the discussion regarding rent, lease durations and payments. He may not renew of his demands are not met.
Mossey, John J Rev Hon. CF (-1995)Addresses Fr Tonks as "Canon". Mr Kiddle (took over from Mr Cotman till August) asks if they will take less rent and if the Studio is for sale. Currently in use as a furniture store. Asks for guidance as Fr Purcell is not good at business transactions. Mr Cotman owes rent (£10) when the tenancy expires.
Purcell, James Rev (-1942)Problems in getting the rent for the Studio. The current tenant (W.W. Milne) is a good fellow but slow payer. He pays in the end but Fr Purcell finds it disagreeable to keep on asking. So he put the business into the hands of an agent King & Gifford in September 1929 but cannot get the money out of them; no word from them from that day nor any answer when he writes to them. The tenant seemed to be two years in arrears, but when Fr Purcell spoke to him he had paid the agent up until August 1930. The agent has not responded to any demands for an account or settlement. Even saying that the matter was being put into the hands of the Diocesan Trustees and their solicitor (Fr Purcell thought that "nice and dramatic") but no response.
Purcell, James Rev (-1942)Fr Purcell enclosed Mr Skeeles account for the Studio repairs. If everything is in order he'd be pleased to have a cheque, at the convenience of the Finance Committee.
pencil annotation on side 2 listing 5 prices totalling £8.4.6
Progress report on work being done on The Studio. Not yet complete - roof done; painting remains to be done. Builders will get round to it when they can. No rent received from Mr Cotman - can Fr Tonks get it from him?
Purcell, James Rev (-1942)Fr Shannon and the Dean, Fr Tony Sketch, visited St Teresa's Social Centre in Acle and St Thomas More's Chapel in Hemsby. The former should be kept to support the growing community in Acle and district. The latter is occasionally used for Mass on Holydays of Obligation. The Anglican Church is rented for Saturday evening Mass at £1100 per annum. Two options: 1. buy a bungalow for a retired priest to live in; renovate and renew chapel at some cost; cease rental of Anglican church. 2. Sell the land. Use Caister instead.
Hemsby folk may be aggravated since they did raise money to extend the chapel some years ago. With a congregation of 50-60 in the Winter rising to 100 in the Summer with holiday makers - Fr Shannon is sure they could all get to Caister (3 miles distant).
Plans for new school [not present] to accommodate 33 infants and 113 mixed.
Tenants at Welwick House well-known for not paying their debts in Lynn and are not paying their rent either. Return plans by 27th for the inspector's exam on 28th.
Printed appeal: Extract from The Catholic Standard and Ransomer, October 14 1893; Bishop's support for Appeal as a letter to Fr Wrigglesworth dated 20 June 1888; Estimated cost of Church, £1500 and Schools £760
