Recording his appreciation of the effort to make the Pro-Nuncio's visit a marvellous success. Likes the idea of him closing the Martian Year and blessing the amenity block. the three of us to meet a long but regular intervals [to discuss religious support]

A covering letter for the attached Contract of Employment. Bishop mentions he is inclined to tire more easily after "heavy" visitations. "Sorry about Brendon! Don't really know what to do." In a p.s. he says he did send an apology to Q[uidenham?] ... "would have like reassurance that my failure was oversight, not uncaring"

Fr Allen advises "Mon Pere" [no name given] that Sr Jane has a year within which to consider what she wants to do on her way to God. The Prioress at Quidenham, Sr Rachel, is with him in wanting to allow and help Sr Jane to make her own mind up and in her own way. He signs it as "Episcopal Vicar for Religious, East Anglia".

Thanks the Bishop for the lunch and for listening to him sympathetically. He will put pen to paper in the New Year.
He encloses a letter to the "Prior of 'Jerusalem'". Philip cannot understand how and why the Congregation for the Faith should be involved in such matters. "Ratzinger makes him see red, I think!"

Draft letter to the Pope [not present] asking for a special blessing and response for reading out at the close of Marian Year. Pro-Nuncio has agreed to support it.
Also attached is a letter about the Spiritual Development of Walsingham.
Trying to get the Pastoral Council together but it is not easy as every one is happy to complain but not to say "yes" and do something about it.
Sr Rachel at Quidenham has written about an application from an Anglican Sister to enter Carmel. Should Fr Allen or the Bishop interview her?
He is in touch with Gary about the diocesan pilgrimage.

Profession is a very moving ceremony; enjoyed deputising for the Bishop. Arrange meeting to discuss religious - David Saunders, you and I. Will talk to Gary. Need some illumination for the National; ideas from you or the Shrine Council welcome.

Pro-Nuncio's visit went well. Asked if he might close the Marian Year and formally bless the amenities area at the Shrine, he said he was happy to do this provided the Bishop was content with it. A Quidenham sister is looking for a period of exclaustration, Sr Rachel approves and so does he after speaking to the sister. Sr Jane's inheritance from her mother is now made over to Quidenham and is considering founding an inner0city monastic fraternity - prepared to wait for dispensation from Quidenham and Rome's approval. Being kept busy by an unrelenting pilgrim season but will put pen to paper about the praying community in Walsingham. The Knights of Malta let him use one of their houses for visiting seminarians to stay.

Since receiving the Guild of Our Lady of Ransom cheque for £500 (paid into the Wymondham account) , Fr Brown has been "trying to penetrate the mystery of the Attleborough accounts". They do not exist. Quidenham and Attleborough collections are placed in a bank account to which neither Fr Brown nor the parish priest for Diss have access. It seems that Fr O'Brien claimed to have authority from the Vicar-General to set up an "Autonomous Area" - Quidenham, Attleborough and surrounding villages. The Bishop seems not to know of this since the Ransom money was stated by him as not for Quidenham. At a recent parish meeting an Attleborough parishioner want to know what as happened to their money (£2,500 to £3,000 gathered at Wymondham's Christmas Bazaar). Fr Brown asks the Bishop to sort this out - money from two parishes in different deaneries going into one back account over which neither parish priest has control.

FR Brown is aware that Fr Bernard Jones is leaving Quidenham. He asks the Bishop to consider Wymondham and him when making a new appointment. The Quidenham/Attleborough area is supported by Fr Jones and Fr Brown would appreciate the appointment of a "not too 'unusual'" priest who could continue the support his burdens in his declining years.

Glad to hear of a review of the parish boundaries with Vicar-General or Dean. Fr Brown acknowledges that the priest cannot do it all - but it is important that there is close contact with the priest through the Sacred Liturgy. The people of Attleborough are not getting this as Fr Peters is far from well. They are being told that they are with Quidenham and consider that the priest is only there to take their collection. Whilst there is a Parish Committee they do not respond to his hints that he'd like to be involved. He thinks there is a problem with trust of priests.
He was contacted by the Council of Churches in Attleborough which is intending to attend the Catholic Mass for Advent. Attleborough people feel they do not want their non-Catholic friends to see the liturgy as currently carried out. Hence Fr Brown is arranging to celebrate this Mass himself.
Finally, he was not "knocking" anyone - it is just that the Ad Clerums don't reflect addressing practical difficulties in organising communities.

Fr Wilson understands that Fr Brendon Peters is carrying out a cure of souls at Quidenham with Attleborough part of his responsibility. The costs of doing this should be coming from collections. Hence Fr Wilson treats him like any other parish. If not correct then the Bishop should sort it out between Fr Brown, Fr Peters and Bob McCormick.
Added manuscript note: "I call Brendan's cure "Quidenham / Attleborough" but have had no account from him."
