Fr Hughes says Kimber is an undesirable having been in prison. Fr Davidson will try to get rid of Kimber. Fr Davidson wishes to speak to the Bishop about progress in Aldeburgh on the supposition Fr Davidson is to stay there.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAFr Hughes has been advised by Fr Davidson about the claims/approaches being made by Kimber. Fr Hughes says he is known by another name, has done 3 months in prison, a very bad record, has no real education. Therefore not suitable to run a college and look after boys. Hops this letter reaches the Bishop in time to avert any endorsement which will inevitable lead to a scandal. Fr Davidson asserts that this is a scheme to make money without work. Kimber's lies and deceit do take people in, including Fr Hughes. The views expressed are from his own knowledge and direct experience.
Hughes, Henry George Rev (1868-1943)"For the third time we have the consolation of addressing you in a joint synodical letter." An increase in representation of religious orders, ancient and recent, a great encouragement to see these. New churches have arisen to replace old and wretched Chapels; schools have multiplied and enlarged; convents accommodate retreats; the zeal of all Catholics.
Work is not yet complete, in securing religious support and services; three issues:
- securing similar services for the Catholics in the Fleet, to those available in the army.
- Catholic prisoners to be on the same footing as protestant prisoners in access to religious support.
- Similar justice for the wretched inmates of the workhouse.
Other major areas for work/improvement are:
- Education of the poor
- Catholic schools
- Clerical education - good colleges abroad; support from individuals and organisations; but, more needs to be done locally
- The new Divorce Court - an evil to be deplored
- New Catechism has been approved
- Maintenance of peace following "the war upon the fair plains of Italy".
