Letter from Gambling - Wells getting cold feet - not use them after Christmas. Walsingham Trust will be in place to ensure the Appeal is pursued. Laurie Tanner's (General Secretary of the Catenians) devastating constructive criticism has been very helpful. Can't be with you because at Lowestoft to bless the new cemetery.

13 May in the Paddington area to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of opening of the Anglican Shrine at Walsingham. This is a week after the synod vote on Anglican/Methodist reunion. There may be a protest against this scheme there. Rather delicate position for the RCs as we cannot be seen publicly associating with opposition to the scheme.

Will try Theological Studies for the pamphlet. Good idea to send Butler's three Tablet articles to members of ARCIC. Working with Dick Stewart on the presentation for the Episcopal Conference [of England and Wales ECEW)]. Working on the pamphlet "The Virgin Birth" and hopes that he has not bitten off more than he can chew, but it will need much chewing before making it simpler.

"Faith" has been pursuing a vindictive campaign against Bishop Clark. He, Bishop Butler and other bishops are being accused, in editorials, of unorthodoxy, cowardice, etc.
There will be a showdown with CTS Committee; Ripley says extremists are to launch an attack on CTS i.e. an attack on Bishop Clark and colleagues, and al bishops in particular and in general.
He is writing to warn the Cardinal about a press reaction - also writing to Archbishop Beck and Archbishop Dwyer.

Massive incoming post causes delay. Can debate the central point of the letter: the inadequacy of the New Order Mass compared to the Tridentine Mass. Vatican II debated extensively and profoundly and from there was promulgated the "Constitution of the Sacred Piturgy" in 1963 from which came the April 1969 Apostolic letter of Pope Paul. Fr Baker has known of the1970 Hierarchy directive and has deliberately put his Bishop in an impossible position but is following Canon Law; he could have acted summarily.

Rev K V Ensor's letter touched the Bishop deeply and precious to receive especially from an Evangelical Anglican. Shares the need not to tamper with doctrine under the rubric of spurious ecumenism. The doctrine of the RC Church is embodies in the New Order of Mass which is shared substantially with the Anglican Communion. The Church is not an abstraction; it is for the episcopate to discern what is to be done in the development of the Catholic faith.

Initial letter about Dick Stewart and his living arrangements and costs. Stewart is happy with accommodation etc., but his honorarium is only £360 plus £160 car allowance. Recently priests on the staff at Wonersh had a salary increase to £600 per annum. Bishop Bowen considers Stewart should not be worse off.
