Is aware that the work-load is heavy for an ageing Fr Sloan. It may sound hard but need Fr Sloan to continue for as long as possible. If circumstances alter then it should be possible to release him, so he can quietly retire.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Is aware that people are unhappy at Dersingham. He is looking into it.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Some very polarised views being received by the Bishop. Concerned that the sick and elderly should be visited. A meeting is to be convened between, Fr Dobson, Deacon Len Matthews, the Dean and the Vicar-General to discuss all the issues and to devise a workable solution for the pastoral care of all parishioners.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Bishop know that Attleborough must realistically be part of Wymondham Parish. Encourages Fr Brown to get on the committee and listen to the grievances. The Terms of Reference for the Vicar-General will will ensure that Attleborough is once again served by Fr Brown.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)The Bishop insists that Fr Brown "cannot do the morally impossible". Note Dereham was erected as a parish to enable Mass at Hethersett. Attleborough should be discussed between Fr Brown and the Vicar-General or Dean to see what is possible. It is sensitive with Fr Brendan Peters only 80% well. Bishop is thinking out loud on paper. Watton: the Bishop has a candidate in mind, but will consult with Fr Brown.
"It is no 'theological nicety' that we will need (structural ) laity involvement on a deeper scale than ever before...", Bishop is uneasy if pastoral responsibility is seen as exclusively pertaining to the Parish priest.
Announcing that on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Pope Pius IX has "declared and defined" that alone of the children of Adam, Mary was exempted from the "unhappy legacy of sin".

“The Cardinal Archbishop and Bishops assembled in the first Provincial Council of Westminster, in the year 1852, addressed to you a pastoral letter, the chief topic of which was the education of the poor. After a lapse of nineteen years, we address you once more upon the same subject; and if, on the one hand, with greater anxiety by reason of recent events, on the other with a confidence and joy which at that time we could not venture to express.”
signed by the Archbishop and 12 Bishops

Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Describes the situation at Dersingham; outlining that a long-time missionary priest is out of his depth in an east Anglian parish; need for support, guidance and presence of other priests. Will the Bishop consider this?
CorrespondentThere is an expectation that a priest will undertake his pastoral duties - visiting the sick, bringing Communion, providing spiritual support. Gives examples about self and friend. Whilst Sr Berhard provides some support; it is the duty of a priest to lead on this.
CorrespondentVicar General has spoken to Fr Brown about the Attleborough and Wymondham relationship. Whilst money sparked off this matter Fr Brown is concerned for the parishioners of Attleborough. They consider themselves rather neglected having had a series of priests with mixed levels of interest. Having a priest to say Mass is not enough there is more to being a Catholic than Sunday Mass.
Brown, Peter RevGlad to hear of a review of the parish boundaries with Vicar-General or Dean. Fr Brown acknowledges that the priest cannot do it all - but it is important that there is close contact with the priest through the Sacred Liturgy. The people of Attleborough are not getting this as Fr Peters is far from well. They are being told that they are with Quidenham and consider that the priest is only there to take their collection. Whilst there is a Parish Committee they do not respond to his hints that he'd like to be involved. He thinks there is a problem with trust of priests.
He was contacted by the Council of Churches in Attleborough which is intending to attend the Catholic Mass for Advent. Attleborough people feel they do not want their non-Catholic friends to see the liturgy as currently carried out. Hence Fr Brown is arranging to celebrate this Mass himself.
Finally, he was not "knocking" anyone - it is just that the Ad Clerums don't reflect addressing practical difficulties in organising communities.
Fr Brown notes that the new prison at Griston, near Watton, has occasioned the CoE to appoint a full-time vicar and the Methodists to advise their minister to include the prison in his circuit. Hence Fr Brown considers that the new prison may require a complete reconsideration of "our pastoral responsibilities in central Norfolk". He attaches a paper with his thoughts.
