Dean's summary report on Aldeburgh parish. Fr Ben Hammond is happy at Aldeburgh; should address his Sunday schedule; has no financial worries. The house is well decorated and in a good state. Church has new heating being installed. Concern about influx of workers at Sizewell B (last time, for Sizewell A, this resulted in the construction of Leiston Church).

Given that the bishop has an appreciation of Fr Worswick's work, the Abbot presents him for a permanent appointment to Beccles as parish priest.
Downside AbbeyAbbot Ramsay: Need to provide resources for the missions - hence a need to move Fr Worswick from Beccles. Fr martin Campbell, currently at Little Malvern, will replace him.
manuscript annotation: "Extremely sorry! But will not embarrass you, only trusting that Beccles will not go to sleep again. Fr Worswick [illegible] her from sleep of Spiritual Starvation. I give faculties to Fr Campbell for when he comes, also for the Nuns. Fr Worswick [illegible] leave his faculties form behind, when Fr Campbell comes he can send it to me. I will just change the name. Sept 12/24."
Thanks for the account of your stewardship - you are happy in Beccles, I think. Share some anxieties but not convinced of your conclusions. Off to Rome, November before can look in on you.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Acknowledges the impact of the departure of a capable priest like Fr Hypher. However, the arrangement to help the Benedictine partners was always going to be temporary. Cannot deprive other parishes of effective pastoral leadership. Fr Gates will minster generously to your needs.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Wording of guidance implies that money paid by the parishioner would go to the diocese and not benefit St Benet's. This is a reflection on the integrity of diocesan officials; your parish is the responsibility of Downside; your priest enters fully into the life of the diocese.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Will speak to Simon [Blakesley] soon but thinks it may be best for all to leave him there. This, and the issue of transfer of the parish back to the diocese, will be discussed with the Vicars General next week.
Smith, Peter David Gordon Rev LLB JCD (1943-2020)Matter reviewed with Fr Simon Blakesley, the College of Consultors and the Vicars General. Agreement that an appointment for 5 years as parish priest would bring stability and time for various pastoral projects. Intent to induct Fr Simon on 26 January and review the appointment in 5 years time - April/May 2000.

Walsh, James RevMany cards from Downside boys and staff. Seeing Fr Rogers frequently may help him - he is a good man. The church committee is mandated not to get into debt and all church improvements are paid for by benefactors - not church funds. Deanery minutes were just pointing out the danger of extraordinary ministers becoming ordinary ones. Mention of other parish oddities: one not having had confessions since last Easter; another replaced the Gospel with children reading out their compositions; another reading out snippets from the pastoral letter.
Watkin, Aelred Rev MA FSA FRSA FRHistS (1918-1997)Fr Jolly provides details about Framlingham.
Attendance: expect a congregation of 30-45 (1948 figures); weekly Mass preferred but monthly better in practice.
Finance: 30/- stipend; travelling expenses 10/-; £36/year from Major Rous covenanted for 7 years; donations and collections for future development.
Transport: use of bus and train; Major Rous will provide transport from Framlingham or Saxmundham - best time for Mass 8.30
Accommodation: not possible to erect a hut at the moment; People at Crown Inn are Catholics and we can use their convenient room whenever.
The Franciscans at East Bergholt may be able to provide a priest to Framlingham for the week-ends. Fr Jolly discusses offers of accommodation from Major Rous who will ask others to offer the same.
Jolly, William T Rev (-1982)Following on an earlier letter re creating a Leiston-Framlingham parish, Fr Jolly discusses the finances which may enable a priest to be sent to this new parish. He acknowledges that Aldeburgh would be a little worse of by £100 per annum, as a consequence.
Jolly, William T Rev (-1982)3 topics in this letter:
-
Southwold - Suggest that Fr Sloan get on with the repairs to the tower
-
Mildenhall - Tony Philpot's suggestion that a more permanent presence in Mildenhall i agreed. Place in housing estate instead of edge of town; a 50% grant fro New Missions Fund, about £20,000 - where to get the rest? Also, staffing - retired military chaplain? Consider a parish of Mildenhall and Brandon?
-
Lynford - what to do with it when [Fr] Flannery goes? Merge into parish for Mildenhall/./Brandon?
Taking a holiday for 5 weeks, requesting faculties for Parish and Convent for Fr Cyprian Alston OSB previously parish priest at Dulwich.
Worswick, T Peter W Dom OSBFr Jolly has asked Major Rous to advise the Bishop of his intent to support a priest when a mass centre is opened in Framlingham. He and his wife will find accommodation for a visiting priest either at his place or within the parish. A monthly mass at Framlingham will benefit those who cannot get to Aldeburgh or Woodbridge. Some cannot attend mass at all; children's religious education is sadly neglected. He enjoins the Bishop to provide a priest to say mass monthly at the Crown Hotel in Framlingham.
Rous, Peter Major (1914-1997)Writing as Mother General from St Mary's Priory, Stamford Hill, London.
If the bishop supports it, the sisters will open a convent at King's Lynn to do similar work to that which they have done for a long time at Beccles - parish, elementary & secondary schools. .
"Anglia: The Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk has awarded an ecumenical project in Newmarket her 'Certificate of Merit' for its work to bring food parcels to needy families. The Countess of Euston, who is Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, sent the Certificate of Merit to Deacon James Hurst from Newmarket Parish." Story continues.
