Announcing the death of Mr Claude Fisher and the Requiem Mass on 22 May 1985 at 2.30 pm in the Chapel of Reconciliation, Walsingham.

Writing from 67 Mayford Road, SW12. Thanks the Bishop arranging for a Foundation Mass for him. He was at the Catenian meeting in Cambridge when he heard and is quite overwhelmed at the recognition of his service.

Miss Insley, deceased, left £900 for foundation masses for John Hickman (not deceased) and herself. Please confirm acceptance of the gift on behalf of the Diocese.

Approval to ready the chapel - need a safe for the tabernacle. Arrangements for the parish priest actions at the chapel should not be more than as agreed - exposition, benediction, [weekly mass].

Responding to a correspondent about situation at Downham Market. "I share your anxiety about Downham Market, and for some time now I have been endeavouring to find a viable solution to this unhappy problem." People with cars can drive to Oxburgh or Swaffham - but this is far from a happy solution.

Fr Nesden is your parish priest; happy for Dersingham to be in the care of Fr Flynn. No problems in saying Mass. Don't go too fast about "Proposed new Church Building" - some prior discussion is necessary.

Will need to speak to Fr Nesden and Fr Shryane. Currently reduced numbers of priests means unlikely to establish a priest in Dersingham. Also, need to think carefully about establishing a mass centre - tell more about the Catholics you have identified.

Knew Claude Fisher for many years and is grieved not to be able to attend his Requiem Mass. Mgr McBride will attend and would like to officiate. Please let it be known that the Bishop could not attend due to important diocesan business previously arranged.

Bishop is going on holiday and on return on pilgrimage to Lourdes - hence a couple of matters causing him concern to be raised (copy to Mgr McBride)

2. Assistants to the President of the liturgy on the occasion of Solemn Masses at the Chapel of Reconciliation

• cuppa and head for Poringland - to prepare for the November Hierarchy meeting on Monday

Leaves it to the judgement of the local parish priest - inform him in time for next year's Year Book.

Wants to re-direct the Sunday Liturgy in to the right channel. Clive may have mentioned that the Diocesan Liturgy Commission would be involved in the three major pilgrimages: East Anglia Diocesan, the Sick and the National. The decisions remain with Fr Allen but they are an "ex natura" advisory group. Bishop says he has suffered misery over the music. He prefers responsorial with the congregation involved as far as possible. (so resist attempts by all small choirs trying to muscle in). Fr Walsh can help with the music. There are other points but they can wait. Fr Tony Rogers is the Chair of the Diocesan Liturgy Commission and PP at St George's Norwich. Fr Gary Dowsey is my secretary.

Bishop agrees with Fr John Harvey, saying that after The National Pilgrimage when he gave a General Absolution he was "invited" to Rome. He fought his corner, giving a context similar to that which Fr Harvey had described, but Cardinal Knox, tho' gracious, stuck to the letter of the law. The only practical solution is to ask pilgrims to go to confession prior to going on a pilgrimage to Walsingham.

Acknowledges that permission was given to Bishop Luker to celebrate Mass in the Holy Spirit chapel attached to the Slipper Chapel. Willing to express permission subject to the Director doing so too. Most interested in your "itinearium ad Deum".
