Thanks Bishop for kind letter, also for promising to make her payments until she can repay. Her agent has given many of the stamps (Adoration of the Maji) away and she has only 1000 sheets of 16 available to sell. Met Cardinal Gasquet (then Abbot) and he seem interested in them. The proceeds of the sale would be for the March Mission.

1977: Rev Hillier asked to see Coldham Cottage. Rev Smith confirmed to Bishop that he has taken over from Rev Hillier. 1978: Mr F Molyneux expressed desire to be a Deacon - recommended by Fr Smith (also seen by Fr John Smith). Bishop choosy re deacons and wants Fr Smith to argue why he can't do this as a lay person. Two testimonials about Fr Smith. Bishop replies to SJ testimonial not to be too hard: ".. on his (Fr Smith) predecessor. He was, and is a holy man..". FMM Sisters to visit; Bishop aware that there are few calls in parishes for the Sisters. FR Smith writes to Sr Provincial FMM laying out ground rules for coming. He outlines these to the Bishop and says he will move out of the presbytery to make way for the Sisters - Fr Wilson is aware . Bishop wants him to go carefully and ensure a good idea is not spoilt through lack of attention to detail. 1981: 4 sisters had visited; work started on new presbytery. Chatteris problem resolved, for now. Sr Elizabeth O'Hagan & Sr Brenda Brennan (testimonials sent to the bishop to underline the asset she could be for the Diocese (XEA6 file 4 P30)). Bishop asks Fr Ray Joyce to cover in March. Fr Smith is going to USA for treatment and will stay with priests - he asks for an extension so he can rest; he suggests that a new priest should be in March next year and will help as he can. FR Smith suddenly cancelled the supply arrangements - no explanation. 1982: Some matter has come up in which Fr Smith considers the Bishop to be misinformed & ill-advised, but, the Bishop must act, so be it. Has the Bishop a chaplaincy for Fr Smith? July 1982 indication that a replacement is to be found for Fr Smith. 24-10-1982 Bishop's letter: Fr Brendan Peters unable to take the responsibility of a parish, fell sick and Fr Berrell will be taking over.1986: Misunderstandings / confrontation puzzle the Bishop who asks Fr Berrell to go easy and not confront the sisters as they say they like working in the parish with Fr Berrell. Fr Berrell explains his take on the "Nuns' Story" - things became fraught but Regional Superior stopped it all by saying that if they are to leave it must be for positive reasons not negative ones. Bishop says it can be worked out and will include Dick Wilson who is taking over as Episcopal Vicar for Finance. 1987: Fr Berrell on leaving March - by 28 Sep 1987. Bishop welcomes Rosminians' (Provincial, Augustine Little) offer to take on the pastoral aspects for March. 1988: Fr Peter Eedy is asked to take over Whittlesey/Ramsey from Fr Liam Crowley, and to contact Fr John Drury as Vicar General for Cambridge & West Suffolk.

Outlines the approach he would expect the Sisters to take when working in March: tenacious, dedicated, developing the spiritual well being of the parish, working together with him each assisting the other. He is not promising an easy ride but they will have the presbytery rent free for 10 years. His predecessor found it very hard going, but, there is a band of apostolic people who are the salt of the earth.

Sr Fay Williams (Provincial) asked Sr Cooney to write. She says that FMM sisters are eager to set up a Mission in March and a number have already volunteered. Cannot commit to 10 years (although it is possible some may stay longer) as they never do that on any mission. She appreciates the sacrifices being made by Fr Smith and the Bishop. They cannot start until March 1981 at the earliest.

Fr Drury has been accepted for missionary work in South America. He asks the Bishop to give him the Mission Cross at mass in St Ives. Also, perhaps, to admit John Gardner to Permanent Diaconate. Asking for a date of release to enable a language course to be booked in Bolivia. Thanks the Bishop for this great act of faith in him.

Miss Baker receives money from friends who prefer her to distribute it to small projects and not use it for big buildings. She understands that Fr Delaney is doing good work in Wymondham Mission but cannot devote all his time to it. She asks if the Bishop would allow him to be the resident priest. In addition to the £100 already sent she could provide a further £100 before the end of the year and indicates more to come. This money is from her friends and this is the manner in which they want it to be given.

Accepts that the Bishop is to consult with Canon Fitzgerald. Restates that her friends give her leave to assign the money as she can but that it is not to be used for a big church. However, if it is for a small temporary church instead of a resident priest, then she will agree to that.

Miss Baker explains that she prefers to pay the money in a particular way since if she died within 3 years of presenting the cheque then the Bishop will be due a large bill from the Charity Commissioners. So she will pay the £200 via a solicitor through Williams Deacon's Bank for transfer to the Norwich account.

The Duke (Henry Fitzalan Howard 15th Duke of Norfolk) will provide aid for the Congress (3rd National Catholic Congress held in Norwich in 1912) but has advised to hold off for an application until after Christmas. £5 spent on chapel at Diss, which will be more comfortable in consequence.
Wymondham accommodation offers: 1. hotel room for £30 per annum; 2. Old brush factory - very large - £15 plus upkeep; 3. ("providential") Sketch attached - hobby build but most "ecclesiastical" - £40 (Canon prefers £35 )
Canon describes the last offer at length. An organ builder and Registrar of Births, who was most interested during the motor mission, heard of their difficulties and offered his building which is done up like a Catholic church: decent organ to be left, water stoup, capable of 60 person seating, considerable amount of oak from the old Abbey worked into it. (sketch attached). What to do? Would like to close the offer at once.

Fr Howard reports to the Bishop on the 11 days of lectures, finished on Sunday, at Wymondham. 50 to 150 attending; earnest and sympathetic; some now under instruction; Sunday School to start for 15 children. Benediction created a sensation and the little church was packed. Parson good organiser and very energetic but is impulsive and wild in his statements. They are looking forward to the Bishop visiting for Confirmation.
