Glad to accommodate another candidate for the ordination. A room made ready for the Bishop - sleep might be disturbed by a nightingale, recently returned. Options for a sermon - 10.30am or 6.30pm mass.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. 10.30 very well. No sermon, but you may read notices, Ep. & Gosp. at usual place. Will fall in with any arrangements for lunch; but give me a cup of tea & toast immediately after Mass. It more convenient to stay at St Benet's Ap. 26/26."

Cannot find "George Vanlelle" in registers.
Fr Squirrell's advice - 4 priests enough for an ordination; unless Bishop requires sung Mass - then seven. Usually low Mass in this diocese.
manuscript annotation: "Arrange for Squirrell to come as MC as soon as I have fixed a date; in June I expect sometime Jan 25/26"
Assumed to be 1996. Programme is for 7 to 9 December [1996] and includes a visit to RAF Wyton. Meals with three families during the days - Cowie, Gavin, Lee.
Caulfield, James Edward Rev BDFr Chapman did not know Abbot Haworth was leaving Quidenham. He considers that Fr Crowther should have Attleborough and the villages to the South. Without Attleborough things would be easier as the parish too extensive to cover properly. Fr Chapman has been putting the Attleborough collection into a Diocesan account - some £1600 now - which the Bishop had agreed to. He did this since the attitude of their parish council showed him to be a stranger and they were covered by the Abbot anyway. He has only said mass their once but in four years he knows many of the Catholics - they are all right - but they "want to paddle their own canoe".
Manuscript annotation: "Archbishop Worlock - against appointment of Fr Crowther."
parish Council have suggested that a mass be said at Wymondham College on Saturday evening. Rationale - £4.50 coach hire every Sunday and space pressures in the Church building. Seeks Bishop's approval.
Chapman, Kenneth S Rev ( -1983)Fr Chapman advising the Bishop that due to on-going works at his Church he will be saying Mass at Wymondham Abbey for first 3 Sundays of December. The Vicar there has already obtained his own permissions. Since Fr Chapman already uses Anglican churches at Attleborough and Hethersett, he assumed that this would not cause a problem to the Bishop.
Chapman, Kenneth S Rev ( -1983)Suggested programme for visitation on 5 May: mass at Gillingham, breakfast with the nuns, confirmation mass in Beccles, meeting parishioners, Convent for lunch, rest, visit sick, tea, music group meeting, mass, supper in Children's home. Very welcome to stay Sunday night. "I look forward so much to your coming, It is often rather lonely here after the hustle and bustle of Downside."
Fr Tom Murray inspected the Parish this afternoon.
Cheque to pay off arrears on Shrine account - will need to re-arrange the investments.
Confusion over where and when Masses are to be said - request confirmation and a list of Masses
Encloses proposed readings for Confirmation Mass; draft order of service [not present]; list of candidates. Paul Maddison unable to attend, so John Shannon has asked Fr Connolly to MC in his place. There will be a celebration in the Hall.
Connolly, Sean RevWriting on behalf of John Shannon who is having a short break in Sligo. Hopes the Bishop enjoyed his stay and got a feel for St Mary's. Encloses cheque for £120 and £20 cash stipend for the Mass.
Connolly, Sean RevBishop to arrive for lunch at 1pm with Confirmation Mass at 3pm
manuscript annotation: "No need to answer J Smith"
Feast of the Assumption Mass was celebrated at North Creake Abbey on 15 August at 4pm. Fr Finegan gave permission. A parishioner's history is attached along with a newspaper cutting. Included a copy of his new small book for the Advent Season
Dasan, Vima Rev SJLeiston debt is £115, advice sent by Canon Tonks. Offers a number of options to deal with the debt - e.g. his own life policy. Wants to clear as much of the debt as possible so as not to encumber the next priest into Aldeburgh. Parishioners have given £10 for Masses to be said. Building fund stands at £194. The Conference suggestion is for St Peter to be the saint to whom the church is dedicated. FR Davidson continues in manuscript on side 2 to say that he has no obligation to leave the money to his family, they will get his capital anyway.
Manuscript annotation: "Leave old debts alone. [?] at A. & L. pro [?]. If you are minded to be generous I'd prefer it to go towards building question for the time being. Make a list of those who leave £10 or [?][?], say Mass yourself. Don't be frightened. Don't fall into panic or be moved to sentiment!"
Parishioner [unnamed] "is going off her head". Asks leave to carry on in Presbytery if she locks up the chapel (to keep out the nuns from Northampton). If her cash goes elsewhere then it really does not matter. Other parishioners will be pleased to return the presbytery. The Baptist minister's daughter said she wished to become a Catholic.
Manuscript annotation "Answered".
Option to visit Leiston for 9.30 mass and brief visitation. Breakfast at the Smith's; leave for Confirmation and Visitation at 8 at Aldeburgh. High Mass on Tuesday at which Fr Mason will preach.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAPastoral letter hit nail on the head. Local M (Mr Anthony Fell of Yarmouth) in Acle congregation - wonder whether he digested the passage about exports and unnecessary industries!
Saved a few items for a convenient time to write to the Bishop:
- Parish Trip to Rome - permission to accompany them from April 8th to 23rd; Fr Evans would be Vicarius Substitutus.
- Permission for Friday weekday Evening Mass/
- Mass Centres at Caister, Hemsby & Acle: Caister - Centre badly situated. Acquisition of a site and erection of a chapel indicated; Hemsby - suffices except in Summer. Extension urgently desirable. A new church would be costly but several more wealthy people have expressed willingness to help financially. Sufficient funds for a temporary enlargement; Acle - chapel adequate now, needs minor repairs. Housing development happening so may need a more permanent Church.
Suggests a Fund for Future Development. Makes estimates for first and second collections at each centre plus need for other donations and fund raising activities. Currently a net surplus of £2000.
Caister Catholic Cemetery much improved - tidy and cared for.
Mission run jointly with Gorleston disappointing - "It was the good who came, and profited; the luke-warm and bad stayed away. I wonder what is the modern approach to the tepid in the face of TV and over-time?"
Now in "the saddle" and glad to be there. Issues to raise:
- Fr Webb dated 4-11-1958 from the Bishop grants faculties to "the priest who supplies and arrives provided he is one of yours and has faculties elsewhere". Fr Wilfred Jolley SJ and Fr James Evans SJ are here and the Provincial wishes them to be retained as assistants.
- Two absences - cancelled one, but not the other - this is leading a Pilgrimage as Spiritual Director to Lourdes from Mar 26 to Apr 4.
- Requests renewing permission to duplicate for all three priests.
- Requests delegate visiting SJ priests for hearing confessions
- Two permissions for (a) Public Processions in honour of Our Lady on Sundays (not frequent), (b) Exposition on Sunday after Feast of Sacred Heart.
- Permission granted for public procession of Blessed Sacrament on 2nd Sunday of Pentecost - not keen to renew but if Bishops wants it...
Manuscript annotations at paragraphs: (1) "yes herewith"; (2) "Yes"; (3) "Yes no form and applies to those serving Yarmouth even supplies"; (4) "Yes if facs. elsewhere"; (5) Yes. add to Ben. Pagella in space below"; (6) Bp. not keen & it may be discontinued".
Notre Dame Convent's superior has arranged lodging. Will call on the Bishop midday on Friday. Expect to leave for Yarmouth via London by train early afternoon.
Manuscript annotation: "Ans: Say Mass at the Convent. Come to see me at 11 or 11.30. Stay for lunch, meeting Canon Tonks, and return by the 2.15 train Ap 20/27. Have given faculties in case Sisters want their Confessions!"
