The Catholic Universe (1860-2021)Progress so far: value of estate established at £330,000. Survey of area identified 158 Catholics - possibly 200 in total. Plan to refurbish the house - sufficient for an Oratory/Chapel in one large ground floor room. The can seek a priest to reside temporarily; he could say mass in a local hall. Hope then to be able to persuade the Bishop to build a church in the village. Fr Nesden is kept informed.
Correspondent"Bishop Alan Hopes of East Anglia celebrated a Mass for the Blessing of Families at St John's Cathedral, Norwich, to mark the end of the Year of St Joseph. During the year, an icon of St Joseph painted by Fr Luke Goymour had toured the diocese before arriving at its resting place in St John's Cathedral. Chris Braithwaite, with his sons Joseph and Leo, carried the icon during the entry procession at the start of Mass." Story continues.

Summary of North Creake Abbey History and background to the Mass being said
ParishionerR S Flynn (Fr Flynn's father) writes to inform the Bishop that his son has Bronchitis following on from Influenza. He might not be able to say mass on Sunday - the doctor hopes that he will. Mr Flynn, Snr. feels his son is too limp and washed out. Fr Page has been asked to help, but it is thought he too may be ill.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Too late to find a supply. Better stay in bed rather than risk after effects of "Flu" if Fr Page cannot help him."
Addressed to one who has made a Mass Offering
Due to the large number of requests it cannot be guaranteed that an individual Mass will be said at the Shrine.
The enclosed is an explanation of the Novena of Shared Masses. If you do not reply then the presumption is that you want an individual Mass - it may be said by another priest who will receive the offering and the intention. If an individual Mass is very special to you then Fr Birch will try to accommodate you.
Requests for saying Anglican mass at the Shrine are received from time to time. The Vicar of St Martin's was told the Bishop would be contacted. Fr Allen asks for the Bishop's expertise and experience to help deal with this request and the whole ecumenical dialogue in Walsingham
manuscript annotation 1: better say no because the only option is the Holy Spirit Chapel (which might appear insensitive) as the Bishop makes it a rule not to have non-Catholic Eucharist at the altars.
manuscript annotation 2: "Yes, I spoke to Peter. GD"
Funeral report. Went very well. All done in white - sure Claude would have approved of that. Mac (Mgr McBride) wore his Monsignorial clobber (for the first time) with a mixture of pride and embarrassment. Good crowd there.
Allen, Peter Rev SM BA MTh[in French] Fr Allen is aware that the Bishop of Tarbes [Tarbes-et-Lourdes] [Henri Clément Victor Donze ] is to attend the National Anglican Pilgrimage to Walsingham with his friend the Anglican Bishop of London [Graham Douglas Leonard]. He extends an invitation to visit the Catholic Shrine during the visit. Fr Allen would be weighted to arrange for the Bishop to say Mass at the Slipper Chapel or the Chapel of Reconciliation.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Refers to a long email sent previously. Has had to Trinate on Sundays after putting on an extra Mass. Has consulted with Fr Walsh. Asks for a faculty for this until Michaelmas.
Back, Christopher G E Rev (-2014)Getting back into priestly duties - said Mass on the 3rd anniversary of his ordination - not done since November last. Staying in Southwold as Fr Mason has agreed for him to be there for a bit. Trinity Fair formally opened this morning, the Mayor of Beccles (an ex postman) attended. Glad to be "out" although did enjoy the social life and the people there [Mundesley].
manuscript annotation: "Answered. Get skipping[?] again! May 29/29"
Should be well set up for end of Summer. Not a supply for Fr mason. Hopes Baldwin [Labour politician] gets in again. Supply being arranged for Fr Mason. Visited Fr Davison at Aldeburgh.
manuscript annotation: "Good! May 31/29"
Before the Bishop goes to Rome, two questions:
- Asking for written approval (for the archives) to confirm a verbal authority to hold the ceremony for the Anointing of the Sick during pilgrimage masses
- Bishop of East Anglia has authority from the Conference of Bishops to make an appeal - has anything been done?
manuscript p.s.: "P.S. My replies from the Cardinal made no reference to the Press Conference..."
Roy Gathercole said the Bishop was prepared to preach at the Blessing of the new chapel. Reading from Ephesians (Chp II v13-22) but an alternative in Kings - let Fr Birch know which he wants so he can warn the reader.
Archbishop Worlock is attending - give an opportunity to speak? (manuscript note - "not attending")
Executive Council has suggested an illuminated scroll be present to the Anglicans on the occasion of their Golden Jubilee - Bishop prepared to sign, copy of text included [not present] (manuscript note - "suggest re-draft"
Fr Birch states that:
- People expect masses to be said at the Shrine
- they presume the stipend goes to the Shrine
- the current system saddens them
- they are joyous at the enclosed system.
The new system means they know what is happening - gives figures to illustrate the system
Naturally the canonical and traditional stipend - a Mass for those who require it - 623 on the waiting list
[Attached is a form letter with an explanation of "Novena of Shared Masses"]
- Wearing of Franciscan habit by Third Order members - Ivan and John have a permission from the Franciscan Provincial to wear habits but I do not know on which occasions. Uneasy at addressing the issue directly; suggests the Bishop does so.
- Assistants to the President of the liturgy on the occasion of Solemn Masses at the Chapel of Reconciliation - modern liturgy rulings vague but willing to accept the Bishop's ruling.
Further to the Bishops letter on Attleborough and in the light of Alies' recovery/non-recovery. Methodist Minister wants to explore sharing via the Shared Churches Act. Also, Fr Bredon Peters wants to reschedule Mass to 9 am from 4pm - he won't have to drive in the dark, and, better timing to help build up the congregation. Mgr Wace considers that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages - especially keeping Brendon happy. Methodist minister is happy with the proposal - less heating required.
Brown, Peter RevPresbytery bedroom accommodation not ready to receive the bishop. Mr Bunbury happy to look after the Bishop at his house. Arrange for Mass at the convent - the nuns will be delighted. Fr Mason will be sending some of his parishioners for confirmation.
