Excellent start: rent-free house and gardens; sites for Aldeburgh & Leiston chapels secured. Need to check on conveyance restrictions and re-convey the buildings to Diocesan Trustees (suggested names: Bishop, Fr Delaney, Fr Hugh Parker, Fr Austin O'Sullivan), take your solicitor's advice. Model Trust Deed available. Leiston chapel seems cheap - but need to consider extension in the future, hence make the walls higher to avoid tunnel appearance. For maintenance, use Mission receipts, but in the intervening months Bishop would provide funds through the Poor Mission Fund (Canon Ashmole will send an application form).
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Bishop sorry about the continuing problems with the tower. Fr Reffitt will be visiting soon, but the Bishop cannot. In the meantime Fr Bull should keep his letters for the Board meeting.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Cannot come to see Fr Reeman - how are the presbytery alterations coming on? Leiston old church site not yet sold. What prospects as money is needed for Leiston?
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Fr Back has been in hospital for 3 days with pancreatitis. Description of his condition and stay in hospital. Sees in his diary that he has been out to 40 meals since just before Christmas! Situation report about the Parish: re-heating done; repair programme for presbytery (no longer up for sale); site at Leiston; more children at liturgy; 2 receptions for Eater; assemblies at school; contacting B&Bs and hotels; expects to be chaplain to the Mayor; coach booked for Chrism Mass. Forward look to exchange with priest in London; Verona for a week; first Communions and then Aldeburgh Festival.
Back, Christopher G E Rev (-2014)Fr Davidson knows Mrs Simpson and will wait for her to raise the matter. Keen to see Aldeburgh finished and Leiston built. Asks for permission to hold all services on Sunday 27th in the Convent as alterations will start after Easter and continue for a week.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAMr & Mrs Hutchinson are the right sort of people. The house will want painting on the outside - but not an expensive job. Asks for a Diocesan loan of £30 to cover the bills already forwarded. The Tower has been such a source of expense - most of which he has tackled.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAMr Hastings' report on state of tower confirms his verbal assessment from September. Chief defect of the tower is that it is made of three thicknesses of different materials all of which expand and contract at differing rates leading to the current problems. Fr Jolly suggests taking the tower down to be the best option. The architect, Mr Hastings, has been asked to compare the options of repair to that of removing the tower.
Jolly, William T Rev (-1982)£800 for demolishing the tower and roofing over. Builders also consider saving the tower can be done for less. An estimate is awaited. Mr Hastings' view is that the best job needs to be done to avoid having to re-address the problem in 30 years time. Aldeburgh Major [W C Reade] (also head of the building firm) considers the tower should be saved - it is a local landmark. Would the bishop sanction an appeal to Aldeburgh people? Differing views on best approach in light of cost estimates for the options.
Jolly, William T Rev (-1982)Elevations and plan views with column on left for alterations to ground floor, first floor, General, external, an extension and services.
Wearing & HastingsVisit to Aldeburgh/Leiston by Financial administrator. Fr Hammond & Treasurer John Lanning were present.
Survey indicates the presbytery needs up to £30,000 spending on it. It suggests the existing presbytery be sold (£95,000) and anew one built between presbytery and church. Fr Dick Wilson has been consulted and suggested that new windows are installed, wiring surveyed, leave sites as is for now. Fr Hammond wishes to remain in current presbytery bit will do the Bishop's bidding.
Confirm no action will be taken on cracks inside Tower. Await instructions on loose plaster work. Cost of re-sanding and re-polishing wood block floor in side Chapel is £10.
William Comer ReadeHastings & Reade have consulted on costs - letters encloses [not present]. Curtains not better than folding doors. Quick response so can press Reade to start immediately after fete.
Bill not back from Scotland. - will let you know how he is on his return.
Confirms that the tender includes pulling the tower down and roofing it over. The architect will be interviewing Reade about extras. Bill intends the Leiston money to be borrowed. Anxious to complete the job before bad weather. Bill & Christine [?] in Scotland and writer will report on Bill taking up duties. Fr Lunley is very sick man - wherever he goes he will need someone liken Mrs Hebb (Bill's housekeeper) as his memory is quite unreliable. As for chapel here [Holy Family and St Michael's, Kesgrave ?] cannot use it its unfinished state but expects it to be in order by September 24 - parishioners best able to come on that date. You will approve of addition in appearance.
Jolly, W O MrCovering letter sent c/o Ellanbrook, Crescent Road, Aldeburgh. for Architect's certificate on account of works at Aldeburgh presbytery.
William Comer ReadeAldeburgh Church: Have written to Fr Jolly about the options for the Tower. Note that the original architect for the tower was said by Fr Jolly not to be in business, but this is not the case. Hence there is a problem of professional etiquette and they are happy to write to Mr Reid if required to do so.
Witton Church: Noted comments on design; preliminary sketches for Board meeting on 30th [November 1954].
Refers to Fr Bull's letter of 29th. Agree not to take action in the gallery - quite safe. Watch for further cracks.
Wearing & HastingsAsks for location of the cracks identified in the tower's plaster. Will refer to drawings and then visit.
Wearing & HastingsReades suggest best results from tell-tales will involve stripping back the plaster. Hastings agrees; some extra cost and some mess. Considers cracking to be long since "dead". Cost less than £50.
Wearing & HastingsNot Fr Bull's letter of 9th and have contacted Reade's to ask them to explain the heating system to Fr Bull. Good to know that the outstanding items have been dealt with.
