Writing to "Charles" [Bishop Grant?] As anticipate costs are rising. Donovan Purcell is trying to keep them down but there is a shortfall (despite moneys expected from Birmingham and Middlesborough). Looking for a guarantee of £4/5,000 to avoid embarrassment.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Wants people to go to Walsingham and pay a reasonable price and so cover expenses. Also wants to commence repayment of the Diocesan loan to the Shrine. Cannot appeal "in vauco" indefinitely therefore must start soon with outside altar.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)General Observations - general agreement; schedule A redrafted; diocese allows appeal funds to accumulate not offset debt
Responsibilities (at the Shrine) - Director (shrine to pay its way): Bishop Clark (oversight) answerable to Bishop Grant (and Fiance Board)
The Pilgrim Church - to await loan reaching whole cost is unrealistic / uneconomic ; need a loan - will the Diocese guarantee it?
Personal Comment - transition form local to national shrine; charge to Diocese remains and must be honoured; focus on Pilgrim Church, rest in suspense
Interest charges - puzzling - Diocese levying interest on itself?
Bishop Parker to Fr Gaffney returning his enclosures and authorising £4000 loan to be made. Bishop trusts he can meet commitments, not knowing how Fr Gaffney stands.
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)The last letter was written in haste; happy to have Fr Trafford, an experienced priest in Beccles; wished wedding at Hoveton to be valid as Canon Roberts serves the chapel, not Fr Whyatt.
John Todhunter: no mention of legal difficulties; he'd implied that the pope wished "fraternise" with CofE and that was why non-Catholics should marry Catholics. Happy to hear Gillingham Hall is secure for the future. Knows nothing about Trust money being connected with the Church and Cemetery.
Gorleston and Ministry Loan: Heard from Fr McBride about joint liability between parishes. If a loan is not required then the diocese could use this but have not yet decided on the matter.
Beccles loan and debt: the return provides for misunderstanding on the nature and amount of debt. If paid off then you are to be congratulated. There is still a need for clarity so the bishop can understand how the parish is situated financially.
Returns the collections book as requested. Does not think Canon Tonks has any to lend. Is there a desperate need to hurry? Better to keep the Army Hut for entertainments. Keeping well in this rather trying muggy weather?
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Thanked Fr Hyland for an excellent day and for his good works in and around the Church - "and all your schemes have been blessed". Gives advice about making loans - do it through the Diocese to ensure a correct record is made - a letter from his colleague in Birmingham may be enough.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Currently only have sketch plans for St Martha's - need final plans to be able to action loan.
manuscript note: "Fr. Wace sent a copy 11 May 1966 ATB"
Encloses Form 65 School [not present] for completion and other data. Asks if he has Form 48 Schools (for claiming grant for bills).
Bailey, Patrick Rev (1932-2022)Instructions on applying for a loan - choose between Downside or Ministry. Need full name of new manager for formal appointment - Mrs E.A. is not enough.
manuscript annotation "£8832 including Architects, Q. Surveyors fees."
Loan agreement is now ready for signature. Send it to Hunting who keeps the seal and he will pass it to the Bishop.
manuscript annotation 1: "Do not [underlined] date the Agreements. / Do [underlined] initial alteration to +Charles Grant. / I have squared this with the Department." [Fr Brewer]
manuscript annotation 2: "Lynn. / All duly signed and witnessed H" [Fr Wace]
manuscript annotation 3: "+ Charles Grant"
Approach to managing interim payments via Mr Sauvain and the Architect. Suggest Mr Waite go back to Curaozon Street and discuss the plans - in a spirit of helpfulness. Will get the Finance Board's approval for the plan. The Loan Agreement will need all details of the School Managers - go via Mgr Hunting on this. Massingham Nuns would be best to secure but Swaffham nuns are very good and have a longer interest in the neighbourhood. Will write to Massignham Mother Provincial about a possible opening at King's Lynn.
Brewer, Arthur T Rev BCL (-1972)Accepts the Bishop's decision as God's Will. He cannot pay the cost of removal to another poverty stricken place having spent every penny in erecting the Church and dealing with the Convent. Can he have a loan (on easy terms) of at least £50? Has Bishop's word he will not be long at Thetford. Aldeburgh congregation are loyal and very good and will be distressed at his leaving - especially to Thetford.
Manuscript p.s. : "I have just received your second letter - I will do whatever you wish. You know my feelings."
Apologises for being spiritually misbehaving with discontent and goes on to say ".. I am determined to act as though I was remaining here forever and leave the future in the hands of obedience." Mrs Battams will be writing to request a loan for the Leiston Church Building Fund and is likely to lodge securities for it. Fr Davidson says he will work hard to pay the debt off as rapidly as he did for the Aldeburgh loan.
Manuscript annotation: " Sorry. No money to lend or grant! Mch 25/25."
The Cardinal, a patron of the nuns [Serafini?], is visiting Woodbridge and lunching at Aldeburgh. Can the Bishop attend for lunch on 24th? heard from Canon Tonks. Does not need funds raised from sale of land; considers the house is sufficient and needs a little work. Hence the request for a mortgage of £100 to enable him to address the house and grounds.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Sorry cannot come to lunch on 24th. You must do the honours for the Card. If you can do without more money then I shall be grateful. The money for sale of old [indecipherable] , Normanhurst land go towards purchase of Normanhurst; U.S. Maryland[?] goes towards old liabilities. Fr Long will be no good to you for a long time."
Encloses a draft letter to the nuns who are unable to obtain a loan for £250. Fr Davidson still wants them to come but not if they add to the burden of debt he already carries. Will proceed is the Bishop wishes it and thinks it will be good for a likely success of their work.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Wind up! But a bit brutal? They know my condition to come with no bigger debt than £1000. I am not to be financially responsible. Fooks has not come up to their expectations apparently! May 5/25."
Asks for return of collections list for parish. Ready to start Leiston building, having sent the bishop Mr Alan Reid's sketch, which can be put up for £1000. Requests permission to borrow the money. Wants to keep the Army hut for entertainments, whist drives, letting, etc.
Davidson, Charles Madgwick Rev DD BAEncloses letters [not available] and refers to them as libellous and an invention. So bad, that he believes he and the Rev Mother should go to court or demand an apology. He quotes a sentence in which he is accused of opening another's mail. The matter of money loaned, repaid, and other actions relating to the Sisters of Mercy are sketched out but are not explicitly described. He asks the Bishop to return the written libel.
Manuscript P.S.: "I beg your Lordship to forgive the paper. I have rejected a part of the letter that would only waste your time."
Manuscript annotation: "Returned documents from Colinstone[?] - Scholastica. As he does not feel inclined to [indecipherable] on & puts all on Mercy Nuns as to intent. You will gain nothing by coming on. Mch 28/29."
