It was intended as an appendix to an historical treatise dealing with the privations endured by the "Red Letter Men" of the Ribble valley in the 16th and 17th centuries. Unhappily, before this was completed the author died and it was never printed. The "appendix" however, was published in the Diocesan Journal the "Cathedral Record". Pages 2-5: typescript; single-sided.
Version2: 7 pages, blue feint lining; typescript with manuscript annotations in pencil. Final page has "Excellent. But (1), Solemn Mass is the house of worship & should be understood & appreciated & joined in by the people - very much depends on this. (2). And the truth [underlined], doctrinal & spiritual, of the prayers of the [?] needs emphasising. (3). We need to enter into the "universal" [underlined] note of the church & not be Lancashire or Sunney or French or English mainly."

His parish priest [James J Rigby? Named on the headed notepaper for Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, in Liverpool] suggested that he write to the Bishop. Outlines a problem with the volume of penitents for confession at Walsingham and the restrictions on hearing it during Mass. It became necessary on several occasions to "dispose of them at speed and missing out all but the essential prayers"; vet in a hurry and dash after the other concelebrants in procession. Realises that Rome has three times refuse permission to allow Confessions during Mass.

Executors have done nothing to wind up Estate of Mrs T. Broeck. Until real estate is sold, Estate has no funds. Validity of amount for erecting church at March recognised but not claim for reimbursement. Asks for any 1917 letters from Mrs Ten Broek.

Her original letter (3 Aug 1914) asking him to pay rest of instalments not found but American court has copy of it & his reply. Request urgent search at Northampton for the original; wire status and send letter by registered mail immediately! Depositions being despatched to America on Saturday...

83-86 - Thirteen years in the diocese of Northampton which encompassed the duration of war from 14 August 1914, summarises some highlights. The See of Northampton will fall vacant on 6th July when he takes canonical possesion of the See of Liverpool. A Vicar General will undertake the Administration.
