Thanks Fr Mossey for his priestly work in the diocese over the years; apologises for any failure in support. Fr Mossey will be missed; the sisters remarked how in spite of frailty he does his utmost to provide their daily Mass. Ben Hammond's generosity means Henry will cover when Fr Mossey leaves for Northampton on June 9th. Bernard [Nesden] will be launched once more on the pastoral road - please pray for him there has been too much grief in his life.

Cannot contact by phone. Time to accept a new church at Dersingham as part of Diocesan Trust; hence assuring responsibility for it and caring for the congregation. Structure: mission within Hunstanton parish with Fr Nesden as the parish priest over a priest-in-charge in Dersingham.

Deacon Matthews has permission to preside at a Eucharistic Service, which is not a Mass - no deacon can say Mass, indeed the Bishop has no authority in Canon Law to allow it.
Fr Dobson is a member of the Holy Ghost Fathers and is on loan to the Diocese.

Outlines a situation in which Dersingham has become isolated from the parish of Hunstanton through a lack of attention and engagement by the parish priest. The deacon does his best but since the death of Fr Howarth, Fr Dobson's approach is distant to the congregation at Dersingham. Requests that the Bishop makes some intervention to try an restore happier times.

Differences of opinion between Fr Dobson and Deacon Matthews are escalating. Fr Dobson no longer providing masses at Dersingham - Canon Ryan is providing cover - this happened without the congregation being informed of changes on the way. Seems as though St Cecilia is to be cut adrift and there are great difficulties between the two men. The letter is an attempt to provide insight and balanced input into feedback the Bishop may have received following a meeting held by Deacon Matthew without the presence of Fr Dobson. The situation is not what Alice Insley wanted for Dersingham.

Sisters came 23 July 1903 and for 3 or 4 months had a Dominican or secular priest for all the services. Bishop Riddell then sent Fr Garnett, requesting them to provide £40 per year (plus collection money from the Convent Chapel). Masses were held at the priest's house and when the "little church was opened" services were held their instead. 18 months ago Fr Garnett wanted a rest on Saturdays and masses would be held instead at the Church on a Monday. The writer lists all that they do (including pay the stipend) - there are only 9 parish people. The Bishop is asked to establish a regular service to the Sisters for good order at the Convent.

Fr Garnett has the funds for a Presbytery - a friend has promised £1,000. Compares his approach with the Cromer house and church. Expects to build: Dining room & study; WC next to larder; window near the porch; no back staircase; 5 bedrooms instead of seven. The presbytery would be given to the Diocese and Fr Garnett will be responsible for all funding and costs. This is a variation to the present scheme which will deliver Boys' Sacristy, Priest's Sacristy and Reception room next to the house. Must have a housekeeper's room - details what it would be used for, especially to give the housekeeper her own space.
If the Bishop could reply by return then Fr Garnett will catch the early Tuesday train to London to see the Architect.

Writing from Hunstanton, Fr Ketterer has discovered in a biscuit tin, whilst looking at some old photos, a press cutting about a predecessor in King's Lynn, mission priest Fr AF Walsh who died in Kimberley, South Africa. Also enclosed is a ticket to 1951 Midnight Mass - had to issue these as the great and the good complained that not to do so would see the righteous excluded from mass.

Apologies for delay in writing - a persistent cough, a touch of influenza which is difficult to shake off. Re-roofing materials now available, hope work will be finished in three weeks. RAF Sculthorpe may close down in 1963, so Hunstanton Mission could become a very poor mission. Found Blessed Sacrament Guild cards, no evidence of it being formally erected but would like to start one. Fr Cowin is not strong but the people is East Dereham feel neglected by him. Perhaps Fr Ketterer had spoilt them when he was there. Rather return as resident priest to Dereham. Not claiming the post but considers that a resident priest needs to be there.

Whilst staying with friends near Hunstanton he received a call that Fr Flynn was ill and could he go to him. Fr Flynn has gastritis, nervous breakdown and is being attended to by a doctor. He will not be able to do Sunday Mass - hence request for Peterborough to cover Wisbech whilst Fr Page looks after Hunstanton. Fr Flynn had concocted a story to cover his being ill in bed and unable to to answer the [door] bell whilst the Housekeeper was away. He is not absent and regrets the tale, having seen the letter sent by the Bishop [checking on his whereabouts].

Went to Hunstanton as requested by the Bishop. Also had a letter from Mrs Ingleby. Keeping the Bishop's interest to himself. Found Fr Flynn in a very bad way and depressed for a month since the trouble with his father's and sister's health. ".. he fell into his old weakness & has been more or less under the influence & now suffering from the effects." Dr came on Monday this week and Fr Flynn has improved. He has missed several masses - blaming the change of the clocks to the new time which meant not many people attended for Mass, so he went to bed. Told straight that the Bishop must be informed - probably he knew about this even now. As his friend Fr Page does not like the subterfuge and asks the Bishop to write directly. Unfortunately a month ago Fr Page would have provided glowing testimonial for Fr Flynn; he did not know he was a wreck.
manuscript note on back of Page 5: "9.4.21 Say that you are deputed to make enquiries & report to me. Impress on him the magnitude of his offence, and necessity of penitential & submissive spirit if he is not to be summarily dismissed."

The trigger for Fr Flynn's illness was the concern he had for his family - his old complaints (Gastritis & Neurasthenia) came back and he took stimulants (but not in excess). He is very fearful and nervous of telling the Bishop of his problems - so Fr Page suggests the Bishop write to Fr Flynn and encourages him to report on the situation. Fr Page must contact and warn Mrs Ingleby as Fr Flynn is asking who may have written to the Bishop. Fr Page has promised to return to see Fr Flynn but has concerns that there might not be any trains as a number have already been taken off.

Covering letter for one from Fr Mossey. Thinks the Bishop needs to see it. Fr Seely will go to Hunstanton to see how Fr Mossey is. Also, a letter [not present] from Joe Sweeney - Mac [Macbride] may have spoken to you about it; Arthur does not like the idea; [Bishop asked to consider].

Concerned about the Mission in Hunstanton and Fr Flynn's poor state of health - he is not being attended to by a doctor. Congregation anxious and troubled about being denied Mass and the sacraments and have asked her to contact the Bishop. She relates that the congregation are asking for another priest until Fr Flynn recovers.
