As a member of ICHT he informs that both phases of external repairs are to start in early Spring 1991 and will include re-roofing the vestry

Excellent start: rent-free house and gardens; sites for Aldeburgh & Leiston chapels secured. Need to check on conveyance restrictions and re-convey the buildings to Diocesan Trustees (suggested names: Bishop, Fr Delaney, Fr Hugh Parker, Fr Austin O'Sullivan), take your solicitor's advice. Model Trust Deed available. Leiston chapel seems cheap - but need to consider extension in the future, hence make the walls higher to avoid tunnel appearance. For maintenance, use Mission receipts, but in the intervening months Bishop would provide funds through the Poor Mission Fund (Canon Ashmole will send an application form).

Asking for the whereabouts of the deed for the church (Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) and cemetery at Gillingham. Given to understand that the Bishop of Northampton and the Abbot of Downside were owners or Trustees. Mentions two letters held on file [see related descriptions]. Can Mr. Todhunter see the Bishop at Poringland on 18 August?

He and Coelfrid enjoyed the meal and meeting Basil Hume.Mentions the Bishop's forthcoming operation; hopes the appeal will get a response in Beccles but spending nearly £6,000 on our own roof may work against it.

Quotes Hatcher's letter about flooding via vestry door; this has to be cured before a new floor is constructed; similarly rainwater entering through south Vestry door is reaching the Chancel. This is a problem outside the church, notwithstanding that medieval churches are prone to such difficulties, and has to be addressed before Meryemana Foundation expends donated funds. If IHCT gives assurances that the damp problem will be addressed, then can progress the lease and phase 1. In the meantime, hope to hold a "Blessing of Pets" and afterwards show people around the church.

William Dodd writing to JS Hall. Condition of all EH grants that prior written approval required from English Heritage is obtained before work commences. Hence surprised to see ICHT giving approval without EH knowledge or permission. As grant aid had been given whilst the church was in use, removal of contents requires EH approval. Meryemana's interest in the church is welcomed but they cannot introduce irreversible changes. Comments on the four main areas affected: NE Vestry, S Porch, NE Chapel, Nave and Aisles. Lengthy comments on the nature of the pews and their proposed removal; requiring that temporary removal and storage be written into the lease; continues to discuss platform over the pews; outlines conditions covering: Redecoration, free standing fitments, ground/fabric disturbance, inventory (for repair and conservation purposes), specific points in pew cataloguing and management. Finally everything has to be reinstated when Meryemana leave the church. Then, EH will not object.

Mr & Mrs Hutchinson are the right sort of people. The house will want painting on the outside - but not an expensive job. Asks for a Diocesan loan of £30 to cover the bills already forwarded. The Tower has been such a source of expense - most of which he has tackled.

Does not have the Hunstanton Log book' but notes there was a book with cuttings and photographs of the early mission and thinks he handed it over with other Mission papers to his successor. If he does still have them then they'd be stored with is furniture at Sudbury. Canon garnet should be able to provide the required information. Mr Shanks was the builder who did maintenance work on the bell as well as created the turret and having hung the bell there.

Sorry to hear the bell has fallen through the roof - illustrates the need for a periodical inspection of all ecclesiastic buildings. Sketch and description of the belfry at Hunstanton. Considers the school chimney stacks at Bury St Edmunds which had to be replaced lest a child get killed by one falling. Offers advice on keeping the chimney cleaned. Not kept bell bill - installed around 1907-1909 - but provides [not present] supplier's address. If Fr Flynn had not take away the bound log book with St Edmund K & M [sic] Hunstanton, I used to keep details of benefactors, gifts, dates, photos and anything of interest about the mission. Quotes Canon Tonks' letter "there is a much larger application being made for repairs at Sudbury". Cannot understand this as he explains with examples of his efforts to ensure the Sudbury buildings were properly maintained - within his own finances. But, "It is a wretchedly rotten old converted cottage." Not happy at being sent to an unsupported mission for the 3rd time - never again!... I'm feeling very fed up..." [further page(s) not present]

The Advisory Board of Finance offer of half the sum required for repairs. However, sees no way of finding the other half from own means. A full application was not possible as the repairs had to be done at once as weather was threatening. Have only asked through necessity.

"Taylor" of Southwold who built the Church and Presbytery in 1914 observed that the belfry was infested by woodworm. It was treated and planks replaced by a local man for £16. Upon inspecting the Housekeeper's bedroom (she had nearly fallen through the floor) and the rest of the house he suggests that the whole place (church and house) was infested by woodworm and needed treating. He could do that for £430. Dean Canon McBride suggested that Fr Pritchard contact the Bishop to get approval to spend the money.
