Feels specialist understands his case. He is to have X-rays & will stay in hospital for a few weeks whether or not he has an operation. Fr Page will say Mass at March on Sunday. He will be glad to get into hospital as he feels he is getting worse.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Re Fr Clare. Difference of opinion on diagnosis. He wishes to avoid operating if possible. Asks Bishop to write to Cardinal for permission for Fr Clare to occupy one of his rooms - he usually accedes when asked. This saves expense to diocese.
Ware, Ernest G MrSaw her brother for 1st time since operation. Inflamed appendix found. Shocked by his condition. Drs have said he should not be in marshy, damp area which causes other problems. Asks Bishop to put him in better area if one available. Hospital is St John & St Elizabeth
Bishop annotation: "also saw him in SS J&G on Tuesday. Problem was appendicitis. Doing very well"
Writing from sister's address: Reporting he is out of hospital, feeling better but weak. Asks leave to go to Brighton for a month as recommended by doctor. If he agrees would Bishop send him papers for saying Mass.
Bishop annotation: "Sent celebret for a month"
Writing from 33 Upper Rock Gdns, Brighton: He has followed Bishop's advice & seen best doctor in Brighton who believes he has nothing to worry about in spite of abdominal pain. Fr Clare says pain now decreasing & so will not take up Bishop's kind offer of a move. If he finds later he needs it he will raise it with the Bishop
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Fr Phillips is in a nursing home in Norwich and is to be operated on for gall stones, possibly tomorrow. In the meantime Freeland will be attending to the spiritual needs of Wymondham and Dereham for some Sundays. Telling the Bishop for information, not to cause anxiety about the mission which I can look after without much extra burden.
Freeland, John Francis Rev (1861-1940)Fr Brown's operation is set for 21-11-1994. Consultant has told him he will not be able to work for a few days. Fr Bernard Jones O. Carm. from Quidenham will help out.
Brown, Peter RevRAF Watton: collections (average £15 per week) , payments, expenses ; mass attendance 50 to 62. Attleborough: collections, expenses.
Fr Chapman liked looking after Watton, but his health is not good and he gets exhausted and would like to be relieved of Watton. Finances declining, a lot of work on house, cottage & hall. New roof needed for church (estimate at £4,050 + 8% VAT).
Chris Toller (of ????) undertook the 5 year review of Wymondham property. Nothing to worry, except to reserve £10,000 for re-roofing the Presbytery in a year or so. They considered future development of the parish in Attleborough, given that the parish has no property there. The old C of E Hall is to come to the market soon, Chris Toller sees this as an opportunity. So Fr Brown is raising it with the Bishop despite his lack of means. Sister Alies is soon to be out of hospital but will not be able to drive and it is thought that having her based in Attleborough would provide someone on the spot would provide support for local people.
Brown, Peter RevFurther to the Bishops letter on Attleborough and in the light of Alies' recovery/non-recovery. Methodist Minister wants to explore sharing via the Shared Churches Act. Also, Fr Bredon Peters wants to reschedule Mass to 9 am from 4pm - he won't have to drive in the dark, and, better timing to help build up the congregation. Mgr Wace considers that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages - especially keeping Brendon happy. Methodist minister is happy with the proposal - less heating required.
Brown, Peter RevFr Phillip asks id the Diocese will take on his Life Insurance Policy - pay the premiums (£6-17-9 per annum) and pay him £111-1-0.
The Bishop did not go to Wells as expected and Fr Phillips says how sorry everyone was not to see him - hopes he will be fit again soon.
Setting out the timetable for the Visitation. Not many for Confirmation as Bishop has said 11 is the minimum age. The sick are well distributed and so a sick visit is out of the question. Coming for Hethersett Mass? Fr Chapman is to have a medical examination at the request of his insurers regarding his diabetes and heart condition which may affect his fitness to drive.
Annotation: "Can't do Hethersett".
Sorry to hear of the Bishop's illness and hence inability to visit the parish at the weekend. Fortunate that Mgr McBride administered Confirmation to those who were away when the Bishop came last month. Suggest re-arranging the Visitation to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the present Wymondham Church?
Brown, Peter RevSorry to upset Fr Brown's plans but "MOT came suddenly and I had to scamper to 'Hope'". Week at 'Hope' was a lifesaver in so many ways. The excellent VGs [Vicars General] are in danger of making the Bishop redundant! Thanks for the honorarium.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Enclosed letter explaining her brother's condition. She & her mother very worried about him as he would never complain. Asks if possible for Fr Clare to be in hospital near them so they could visit. Could he see specialist while staying with them next week?
Sherry, Gladys MrsThanks him for letter & information re specialist. His doctor has written to Mr Ernest Ware MD as he needs surgeon & he hopes to see him next week. He has written to Canon Drake [re Sick Clergy Fund]. Assures Bishop he will not move into presbytery until it is dry.
Clare, Wallace George Rev FRSA, FIGRS (1895-1963)Shanahan informed that the dispensation document is being sent on to Rome and the reply may take weeks. Fr Middleton ("hipped by insomnia"), being done some good by this place, is keen to do supply work., and has relinquished the Superiorship of the Scottish [indecipherable] house at Craighead.
Thompson, David H Rev SJ ( -1926)Poor reports concerning two individuals; regretting futile expenditure of sparse funds but should not fund those who do not have the ability required to be a priest. Archbishop of Liverpool (Dr Whiteside) [died 1921] has said that over 50% failed. Resigning as Extraordinary Confessor to Cromer Nuns. Despite Canon Law requiring the post he has not seen the nuns since last September, they wrote in December to say they were going. Fr Thompson is ill with neuritis in the thigh and hip and in bed from 10 to 25 February. Fr Courtney is on sick list since last September and Fr Provincial has sent Fr William Wanen who arrived yesterday - 0.3 of a man suffering from malaria ("badly hipped") contracted in British Guinea and sent home. Faculties requested.
Thompson, David H Rev SJ ( -1926)Acknowledges Bishop's good wishes for his health. Agrees that the nuns in the convent adjacent should have their own "Extraordinary" not from St Mary's. Notes his Deanery is St John's Norwich. Father Cuthbert's relapse works against his hope to return to British Guiana.
