Wording of guidance implies that money paid by the parishioner would go to the diocese and not benefit St Benet's. This is a reflection on the integrity of diocesan officials; your parish is the responsibility of Downside; your priest enters fully into the life of the diocese.

The last letter was written in haste; happy to have Fr Trafford, an experienced priest in Beccles; wished wedding at Hoveton to be valid as Canon Roberts serves the chapel, not Fr Whyatt.
John Todhunter: no mention of legal difficulties; he'd implied that the pope wished "fraternise" with CofE and that was why non-Catholics should marry Catholics. Happy to hear Gillingham Hall is secure for the future. Knows nothing about Trust money being connected with the Church and Cemetery.
Gorleston and Ministry Loan: Heard from Fr McBride about joint liability between parishes. If a loan is not required then the diocese could use this but have not yet decided on the matter.
Beccles loan and debt: the return provides for misunderstanding on the nature and amount of debt. If paid off then you are to be congratulated. There is still a need for clarity so the bishop can understand how the parish is situated financially.

Referring to letter to Fr Wace. Committee is mandated not to get into debt.
How to solve the problem of people gaining access to a school like Notre Dame by claiming to be Catholic but never setting foot inside a church. They are being subsidised by our parish.

Many cards from Downside boys and staff. Seeing Fr Rogers frequently may help him - he is a good man. The church committee is mandated not to get into debt and all church improvements are paid for by benefactors - not church funds. Deanery minutes were just pointing out the danger of extraordinary ministers becoming ordinary ones. Mention of other parish oddities: one not having had confessions since last Easter; another replaced the Gospel with children reading out their compositions; another reading out snippets from the pastoral letter.

Novice Master at Manresa House [Jesuit house, Birmingham] suggested the approach regarding Cyril Banham training to become a secular priest in this Diocese. Always wanted to become a priest but was delayed following an operation in 1914 for empyema. Will support the cost of the training. Cyril saw Canon Drake recently on this matter.

Leaving tomorrow. Letter enclosed [not present] re marriage case. Sorry to be going - did not request it. Concerned that "the people" should know this is so. The Abbot was informed about the financial situation in which several hundreds of pounds are required to address urgent repairs.
