Part of St Joseph Parish, St Neots, Cambridge

Mrs Temple Layton has sent chalice on, formerly of Brampton, a small silver chalice engraved "St Joseph's College, Brampton, 1888" - asks Bp's permisson to keep as a second chalice. A request from a catholic (Mr Goddard of Gt Staughton, Hunts) to purchase some land to build a bungalow for him and his wife - both of poor health and may not last long - hears that he may bequest the land/building back to the diocese. Attended his sister's clothing at Meaux [France]. Then on to Clarmont to visit Madame Betheley (was Rev Mother at Aldeburgh) who is delighted to hear of the progress of the sisters in that parish. Fr M was off-colour but feeling better now.
manuscript annotation: "1. Keep chalice make note of circumstances in your Mission book. 2. Must place Goddard's desire to buy and build at St Neots before Advisory Board and promise to leave house and purchased land back to the Diocese must be first, not second hand."
2nd manuscript annotation [red crayon]: "Don't lose this!"

Stretching the Ransomer's gift a long way. Vestments all hand-me-downs form wealthier mission - glad to get them - but not all worth of Mass. Delighted that the Bishop will come to open the church; distressed to hear of the Bishop being ill. Although Canon Youens mentions good recovery. So cold in St Neots that the car's engine froze during mass and the radiator burst.

Received a telephone message form the Catholic nurse looking after Canon Eeles. They have to operate in a day or two - it is the only way to clear the blockage. However the doctor also said that the fatty heart makes the operation risky. Fr page is unwell. canon Youens is due in Lynn tomorrow.

Servite Sisters of Beccles have asked him to be their Confessor-Extraordinary following Fr Vermuelen's departure. Permission to say mass at Dunwich (on St Felix, March 8) for himself or Fr Davidson. Bitter weather - much sickness and want.

Part of Northampton Diocesan Travelling Mission - Fr McCormick

Heart condition - Fr McCormick was in hospital for a few days following a suspect coronary, which turned out to be an erratic heartbeat.
The Administrator of The Child Protection and Welfare Society requires professional people to be paid at an appropriate level and will incur significant travel and subsistence expenses. He suggests that the Bishop should consider these issues for this post and therefore Fr McCormick submits his resignation being neither trained nor experienced in this subject area. He requests a parochial position instead.
The Bishop will be aware that there is a DHSS (Department of Health and Social Security) investigation into the Society over allegations made against members of staff.

Returns delayed due to calamitous start to 1981; difficulties have been added to. Housekeeper had virulent flu, then Fr Mossey, parishioner assistance with documents made things worse; covenant signatures in limbo, locked in a safe with key mislaid. "I have no doubt that I ought to retire to prevent more mayhem..."

Canon Eeles is better and likely to improve very slowly. His sister is with him and caring for him.
Fr Flynn wired and Fr Page found him very very unwell, despondent and feeling that he is an outcast and no-one cares. Hopes to see him again in a few days.

Fr Page is writing from Wisbech. Canon Eeles is diagnosed with an ulcer around the stomach and large bowel. The doctor cannot understand why Canon Eeles is not in greater pain. He does not need watching over day and night, but must keep resting. The supply form Cambridge is helpful. Fr Marshall is sending over Fr Moir for next Sunday. He is grateful for your kind letter and knows that I am keeping you posted.

Fr Page reports that Canon Eeles is making progress but it is very slow. Despite that he is attempting to do more than he should and resents people telling him to rest. Stopped by Fr Page from hearing Confessions on a Saturday. He is concerned about Holy Week and Easter Sunday – things will be missed for the first time in years. Asks the Bishop to intervene with kind words to Canon Eeles about not taking on too much. The doctor believes the Canon should have a change of scenery and get away as soon as possible. Some congregation members have collected £25 towards expenses for this. Obtaining a supply is proving difficult and he is now approaching the Benedictines in Farnborough but a wire to Hitchin has produced a result. All this is kept from the Canon. The doctor says the Canon’s heart is not healthy and extra care is required. The renowned Fr Clare is visiting at Wisbech.
p.s. Not seen Fr Flynn but understand he is better and has said mass the last two Sundays.
Manuscript annotation: “Answered: Thanks. Have written to the Dr. & told Eeles to do what he is told, even to going away; & that he must have arrangements in your hands – nto to bother. Mch 26/26.”

Urgent wire from the doctors as Canon Eeles has been over exerted with visitors and planing to do the children's confession on Saturday. He managed to get Canon settled down and resigned [in bed]. There are problems getting a supply - contacted several places but has had luck with Buckingham. Quite happy to keep on supporting the Canon.
Not been able to visit Fr Flynn. "All you wrote about his case is being strictly confidential" and he will try to found out about the financial situation although he is at times "very cute".

Fr Page is writing from Wisbech. Canon Eeles is quite unwell and has two doctors attending him. They are not sure what is wrong with him - he has light-headedness and fainting fits with falls. Need to arrange a supply - best would be for Fr Page to go to Lynn whilst the supply looks after Wisbech.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. Was a =t Cambridge when your appeal for [?] for Eeles came through! trust [?] is around also. Keep me informed of how things go. What is the matter with Eeles? Very anxious. Mch 1/26"

Informing the Bishop of Fr Flynn's continued problems. The housekeeper having been sent on her well earned holidays returned to find Fr Flynn in a bad state. Canon Eeles and Fr Page have made arrangements (and provided cover) for a priest to supply from Holy Cross, Leicester.

Whilst staying with friends near Hunstanton he received a call that Fr Flynn was ill and could he go to him. Fr Flynn has gastritis, nervous breakdown and is being attended to by a doctor. He will not be able to do Sunday Mass - hence request for Peterborough to cover Wisbech whilst Fr Page looks after Hunstanton. Fr Flynn had concocted a story to cover his being ill in bed and unable to to answer the [door] bell whilst the Housekeeper was away. He is not absent and regrets the tale, having seen the letter sent by the Bishop [checking on his whereabouts].

Went to Hunstanton as requested by the Bishop. Also had a letter from Mrs Ingleby. Keeping the Bishop's interest to himself. Found Fr Flynn in a very bad way and depressed for a month since the trouble with his father's and sister's health. ".. he fell into his old weakness & has been more or less under the influence & now suffering from the effects." Dr came on Monday this week and Fr Flynn has improved. He has missed several masses - blaming the change of the clocks to the new time which meant not many people attended for Mass, so he went to bed. Told straight that the Bishop must be informed - probably he knew about this even now. As his friend Fr Page does not like the subterfuge and asks the Bishop to write directly. Unfortunately a month ago Fr Page would have provided glowing testimonial for Fr Flynn; he did not know he was a wreck.
manuscript note on back of Page 5: "9.4.21 Say that you are deputed to make enquiries & report to me. Impress on him the magnitude of his offence, and necessity of penitential & submissive spirit if he is not to be summarily dismissed."

The trigger for Fr Flynn's illness was the concern he had for his family - his old complaints (Gastritis & Neurasthenia) came back and he took stimulants (but not in excess). He is very fearful and nervous of telling the Bishop of his problems - so Fr Page suggests the Bishop write to Fr Flynn and encourages him to report on the situation. Fr Page must contact and warn Mrs Ingleby as Fr Flynn is asking who may have written to the Bishop. Fr Page has promised to return to see Fr Flynn but has concerns that there might not be any trains as a number have already been taken off.
