Part of St Mary's Parish, Great Yarmouth

Update on Fr Josaphat. Having spoken to Fr Shannon in Yarmouth, he took him on for a trial period of two years. He is very pleased with his presence in the parish, he is eager to work, very jolly and kind to the parishioners. It is good for Nigerians to have one of their own priests, As the trial is coming to an end he is disposed to allowing him to see out his remaining two years of his visa in this parish.

Introducing himself as the new Provincial of the Salvatorians. Visited Fr Richmond and states that he has done much to build the up the church in Burnham Market and at the USAF base in Sculthorpe. As St Henry's is in the parish of Walsingham/Wells he asks if the Bishop could do something to staff the area with a priest and remove the doubt Fr Richmond has over his future.

Part of St Joseph Parish, St Neots, Cambridge

Having looked for the Deeds in the Deeds cabinet at Bishop's House marked St Neots and not found them. Should search extend to all other deed envelopes in case St Neots' were misfiled? Provides addresses for two previous parish priests. Unlikely they will have much to offer on this subject.

Part of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St Edmund Parish, Hunstanton

Whilst staying with friends near Hunstanton he received a call that Fr Flynn was ill and could he go to him. Fr Flynn has gastritis, nervous breakdown and is being attended to by a doctor. He will not be able to do Sunday Mass - hence request for Peterborough to cover Wisbech whilst Fr Page looks after Hunstanton. Fr Flynn had concocted a story to cover his being ill in bed and unable to to answer the [door] bell whilst the Housekeeper was away. He is not absent and regrets the tale, having seen the letter sent by the Bishop [checking on his whereabouts].

Went to Hunstanton as requested by the Bishop. Also had a letter from Mrs Ingleby. Keeping the Bishop's interest to himself. Found Fr Flynn in a very bad way and depressed for a month since the trouble with his father's and sister's health. ".. he fell into his old weakness & has been more or less under the influence & now suffering from the effects." Dr came on Monday this week and Fr Flynn has improved. He has missed several masses - blaming the change of the clocks to the new time which meant not many people attended for Mass, so he went to bed. Told straight that the Bishop must be informed - probably he knew about this even now. As his friend Fr Page does not like the subterfuge and asks the Bishop to write directly. Unfortunately a month ago Fr Page would have provided glowing testimonial for Fr Flynn; he did not know he was a wreck.
manuscript note on back of Page 5: "9.4.21 Say that you are deputed to make enquiries & report to me. Impress on him the magnitude of his offence, and necessity of penitential & submissive spirit if he is not to be summarily dismissed."

The trigger for Fr Flynn's illness was the concern he had for his family - his old complaints (Gastritis & Neurasthenia) came back and he took stimulants (but not in excess). He is very fearful and nervous of telling the Bishop of his problems - so Fr Page suggests the Bishop write to Fr Flynn and encourages him to report on the situation. Fr Page must contact and warn Mrs Ingleby as Fr Flynn is asking who may have written to the Bishop. Fr Page has promised to return to see Fr Flynn but has concerns that there might not be any trains as a number have already been taken off.

Part of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Parish, Wymondham

Refers to a discussion with Mgr Freeland about a notice in the Catholic papers regarding Wymondham [no subject given]. Would Bishop consider an application from a prises about to leave a religious order? This priest can get testimonials from his order and the Vicar General of his Diocese, he also has some years experience as a PP.

Writing from St Mary's Abbey, Buckfast, Fr Phillips believes that he can raise £100 a year for some years and if £175 is sufficient for the Mission and him, then he could start in a fortnight if convenient to Mgr Freeland. His next address is "Eastlands", Basingstoke.
Manuscript annotation: "I hope I have not asked too much. I don't want you to ruin [illegible], but to help out your income. Perhaps I did not quite understand your financial position. Have written to Mgr Freeland. You can write to him telling exact day of your intended arrival at Norwich. He will examine your faculties and administer the Oath unto Mgr Freeland. Recently seen his Provincial in London to discuss his stay at Burnham. Originally Canon Hulme asked Fr Richmond to try and make the church a viable proposition. This has happened. When the Marists came to Walsingham he thought he'd have to move on but they asked him to stay. But, the situation is difficult for Fr Murphy, even though he allows him to continue - recently adding bell and belfry. Also looks after USAF base at Sculthorpe. Provincial thinks Fr Richmond should leave - but will be seeing Fr Murphy soon about painting the outside of the church and will make everything clear to him then.

Dated the Feast of St Stanilaus (April 11). Missed the Bishop's visit to Yarmouth since Fr Thompson was running 3 short retreats in Birmingham. Needs faculties for Fr Salvatore Pace who is replacing Fr Harper (posted to an easier berth). Would have preferred that Fr Courtney went instead as he is more of an invalid and less efficient than Fr Harper. Fr Pace will be very useful in rounding up the Italian colony who "Have no gotta Inglese". Fr Pace is Maltese and educated at the English College in Malta. After joining the Jesuits he was with the French i n Syria, the Italians in Naples and spent six years at "the hardest mission we have - St Joseph's, North Woodside, Glasgow. I went through that 'black quarry' as it was locally called in 1899"

An extended and angry letter to the Bishop about the shortfalls of CFs (Chaplains to the Forces) in his area. Describes one as amiable but mutton headed ("the Ornament") given to much talk of the hunt but doing little to administer to the needs of the 700 RC soldiers stationed in the area. Sir Archibald Buchanan (Sutherland & Argyle Highlanders) recently contacted Fr Thompson over the Brigade Chaplain who had mysteriously disappeared. Fr Thompson is angry that he receives no support from the Army despite them using his church (700 wet and muddy men make a lot of mess). He wants the Bishop to write and fix the problem. "P.S. You have perhaps heard that we now have 73 of ours [Jesuits] at the front and that the WO [War Office] begs the Provincial to send more! A good CF at the Front is a perambulating sermon to the non-Catholics. It makes my flesh creep to think of the effect of a slacker there."

Ordained in 1983; a member of the Canons Regular of the Lateran and having spent time in Bristol (with the Servants of the Paraclete) is looking to undertake parish work and asks if he may do supply, at least in the first instance.

Covering letter for one from Fr Mossey. Thinks the Bishop needs to see it. Fr Seely will go to Hunstanton to see how Fr Mossey is. Also, a letter [not present] from Joe Sweeney - Mac [Macbride] may have spoken to you about it; Arthur does not like the idea; [Bishop asked to consider].
