[Draft?] letter from Fr Shryane to [Council?] commenting that the Council has completed restoration work on the South Gates. A similar project at Red Mount Chapel goes way beyond the terms of the lease. The committee consider that the responsibility for such work and the Chapel be taken on by the Council and the current lease withdrawn

Letter provides a brief background about the Red Mount Chapel and RC Church involvement with lease. Need to make greater use of the building to counter the intense acts of vandalism. Responsibility for care and maintenance of the building should be returned to the Council. Requests English Heritage assitance in achieving this.
The advisory committee is unanimous in its support for returning the lease to the Council. They would like to retain the upper Chapel for religious services when needed. The amount of work required is beyond the terms of the lease and were burdonsome after the day to day repairs after vandalism.
The Finance Board do not meet until May - need permission to have repair work done on the tower. Canon McBride suggest write to the Bishop and obtain permission post-event. Cost is £4250 to make the tower as good as new. £8000 held by the Diocese for us, so can afford it. Jeremy Rafe, a young architect, will supervise; he is qualified though not a member of ARIBA. The work will be done by Woods and Sons who are currently working on St Johns.

Request received to put broken glass on the wall separating the church from the garage next door. Canon McBride sees nothing wrong with agreeing but suggests gaining the Bishop's views.
Estimate regarding the clock - £200. Would like to sell it (need the money) but will accede if the Bishop says it should go to Mrs Sykes.
Tell-tales have been placed to register movement in the stonework. Mr Taylor, the builder, thinks movement has stopped. Redecoration would be about £1000 and it should be done at this time of the year. If allowed then it will start after Christmas.
manuscript annotation: "Offer it to Mrs Sykes for £200?"
Encloses details [not present] of work done on presbytery and sacristy. A lot need to be done to make the place habitable - and there are three rooms yet to do. Fr Pritchard had done much when here - what it was like before...? Still more to do. Church at Halesworth not been touched since it was built 17 years ago.
Sloan, James Rev (1913-1988)Borough surveyors says there is no right of way to the home. Its use seems to be a concession on our part. Perhaps can offer the lady this approach?
Halesworth Church has woodworm on the outside and needs £500 to £550 amount of work. Permission to proceed?
manuscript note: "Told Jim 2/4/74 to get on with the fence"
Windows overlooking church property: no objections provided they are frosted glass and do not open except at the top.
Right of Way: Unsure about the right of way being requested - there is a private foot path to the old people's home. Awaiting confirmation from East Suffolk County Council.
Workmen in the house - big job to put matters right - no proper outlet and the water from the sink goes straight in to the wall.
Bill for work on the presbytery (which was in a 'crummy'' state) has come to more than expected - £3344-77. Have £1500 in the bank but £500 is needed for work on Halesworth church. Can you help out?
Sloan, James Rev (1913-1988)Writing to Peter [?] thanking him for pension advice. Encloses a cheque for £1265-10 and lists the collection elements, plus £1000 as a parish deposit. That will be required for church and tower repairs - estimates of £5000-6000 when the church only cost £2000 to build.

Top half: Fr Richmond to Fr Wilson [undated] - Taking over All Saints will involve expenses; expanding St Henry's might involve greater expenditure
Lower Half: Fr Wilson says that with £2,700 on deposit and £1100 in the bank there is sufficient to cover the work recommended by Mr Toller. If not, then the Diocese can help out.
Addressed to "Ben".

Bishop Charles agrees that central heating and double-glazing is reasonable. Tell Gerry to go ahead and not do the work himself, and no need to ask Kelleher [Witham Weld & Co]. Sick Clergy Fund should be topping up Gerry's income, sufficient for him to have a housekeeper if health requires it.
Wilson, Peter John Rev MA FCA3 topics in this letter:
-
Southwold - Suggest that Fr Sloan get on with the repairs to the tower
-
Mildenhall - Tony Philpot's suggestion that a more permanent presence in Mildenhall i agreed. Place in housing estate instead of edge of town; a 50% grant fro New Missions Fund, about £20,000 - where to get the rest? Also, staffing - retired military chaplain? Consider a parish of Mildenhall and Brandon?
-
Lynford - what to do with it when [Fr] Flannery goes? Merge into parish for Mildenhall/./Brandon?
Bishop (of East Anglia!) approved plans for painting the outside of the presbytery. False economy to exclude the conservatory - suggests he includes it.
