Part of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and St Edmund Parish, Hunstanton

Despite the pain in his right arm from neuritis, Fr Flynn is setting out the case for him to be assigned to Aylesbury. He understands that the priest there, Fr Scott, is more of less permanently disabled and may be moved from his mission creating a vacancy. Fr Flynn has never found Norfolk or Suffolk much to his liking and would appreciate being moved to Aylesbury which gets him away form these counties and nearer to his father.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. Aylesbury again filled by Scott. very stretching place owing to Government requirements at the Prison. You will never be able to keep regular & punctual owing to your breakdowns. That only you are in Hunstanton where, except during the season, this does not much matter. Will think over the matter Oct 24/25."

Still suffering from the results of Bronchitis and Influenza. Dr says must get complete rest. Has arranged with Bishop's Stortford for a supply on Sunday - would the Bishop grant faculties? Will be going to a convalescent house for priests in Brighton from 12th for a time.
              Manuscript annotation: "Granted"

"I am at fault, and I must confess it. I have been ill for over a month and am only now recovering."
Provides an explanation for missing the three masses concerned: 2 when he was too ill; 1 when no-one turned up, the clocks having been changed. The family trouble (dad aged & sister dying through diabetes) was described with his inability to get to see his sister due to being needed in Hunstanton. Encloses a doctor's note.

Nobody about as the works is off for 10 days and all have gone on holiday. Leaving Wellingborough for Hunstanton and will stay for a few days as full of visitors who come for daily mass. Will be discrete in sounding people out so as not to give away his real objective. If Fr Flynn is at home then why no notice posted on the church door? He thinks something is not right and will see the Bishop when he leaves. Fr Hyde can stay till he returns [at Wellingborough?]

Thanks the Bishop effusively for his kindness. The motor is most beneficial enabling travel. It was mostly a gift supplemented by the sale of his motorcycle - "the boys enabled me to run it at not a very great cost". Seldom been so long without a pupil for his private classes which helped defray expenses. Expects some endowment which may add to £1,000 for Hunstanton and enable a successor to build a church. May replace the motorcar with a cycle-car (uses a motorcycle engine) and can run for 50 miles on a gallon of petrol.

Good midnight Mass attendance & 30 communicants. Not well - ulcerated stomach. Money is very difficult; been covering costs out of own pocket, but cannot now; he requests a loan of £25 to relieve the strain until Summer. Trying to get another foreign boy who could help in the season. Young Le Strange (from the Hall in Hunstanton) has been a regular Sunday Mass attendee for 3 months and it is possible he could be received in to the church; there is another well known person under instruction. His efforts are hampered by this "miserable High Church movement", which keeps a lot away from the Church, "what a ghastly mockery of the Church it is, yet intelligent people swallow it."

Personal Loan from the Finance Board; will increase insurance policy from £75 to £100; Canon Tonks to fill in the form and send to Century Insurance in Ipswich. Not at all well. Lady Winefride has invited him to stay - so he will go one Sunday in Lent. Can the Poor Mission Fund do something for Hunstanton. "I have had a rotten time & am likely to while the war lasts & even afterwards for a time while people recover the strain on their resources."

Updating the Bishop on his situation. Bad case of shingles nearly over and almost recovered. Housekeeper had to retire due ill health and replacement is unacceptable. Sister helping out for now. However, if the situation does not improve he cannot manage on his own and may retire to Peterborough near his family.

At St Neots the Bishop did not look well - have a couple of days at the [Hunstanton] seaside to restore you. 3 favours: granting of faculties to Rev Stephen Sproule CSSR who is coming to give a course of instruction; dispensation for an old woman regarding Eucharist; one of the Sisters is troubled with operations and needs medicine during the night, or a cup of tea - a dispensation for her too. Quite hard-up and would welcome any Mass Intentions that the Bishop may have.

Received the mass intentions and the dispensations - 5/- fee enclosed. Severe cold from downpour in Lynn Pilgrimage and was wet through. Congregations from Hunstanton (25), Lynn (150) and Swaffham (50) went to Oxborough for their Procession, greatly pleasing Sir Henry and Lady Bedingfeld.

Sorry that the Bishop is ill. Fr Heptonstall has been busy since the Bishop's visit and would be able to say Mass at St Neots on 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month from August - provided he can be relieved of the Ramsey parish. Gentleman given £20 towards expenses and expects others will help. Spanish Influenza is ramant with many soldiers and civilians affected. Ill himself. St Neots people are most pleased at having their own little church.
manuscript annotation [by the Bishop?]: "What security? Don't come in six months time saying that St Neots has petered out, and that you have not a living at Huntingodn alone!"

Kimbolton belongs to Rushden parish - Fr Lockyer has asked several times if Fr Heptonstall could take it on - no, district is already far too large. Attack of 'flu with some pneumonia - 5 weeks illness took some getting over.
"Everything is very quiet here - no work & few people. I'm simply vegetating!"

Unfortunately his letter was too late for the Sisters in Wales. There are two properties both suitable for convent schools - one with 35 acres the other with 70 acres. Does Canon Tonks know of any communities on the look out for properties? Much better as the pleurisy attack was mild but still with him, not confined to bed.

No returns been made to tax inspector. Address for the Holy Ghost nuns? Would help to get the mission going if a convent were here. Canon Elwes appointment as bishop is good news. He played cello at some concerts here and has supplied for me. Pleurisy back - worried about having to travel 22 miles between masses.

Proposing to leave on Wednesday 20 October with his housekeeper. Has informed the PP Fr Murphy SM
Never expected to be in Blakeney so long. His infirmities require him to retire and will go to Lancashire to live in a rent-free cottage offered by a Catholic farmer. Provides basic information in Sunday congregation numbers and income.
