Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark : Literature for reading

"... it is not strictly necessary for Our Lord to be born of a virgin. I am not sure that St Thomas doesn't make the point."
Read Laurentin before you finish the pamphlet.
manuscript ps: "I have now read your paper on Argument [? Agreement] in Faith. It is excellent and should have wider circulation. Many thanks."

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark : Theology of St Luke's Gospel

Copies of articles sent to all ARCIC members. Like to see Tillard's paper on Priesthood and Ministry.
R [René] Lourentine's great study of the first two chapters of St Luke's Gospel hints that St Luke's information may have come to him, via the circle of which St John was the centre, from Our Lady. Impressed that while St Luke presents information representing her point of view, the infancy narratives of St Matthew is through the eyes of St Joseph.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Virgin Birth pamphlet

Bp Clark's pamphlet on the Virgin Birth - thoroughly scholarly and enlightening. Like to see it published. The public's general obsession with sex means that there might be unfortunate effects with the treatment of "clauso utero" and "intactum hymen". Grateful for the personal help as after his conversion he was led to believe that unless he accepted the clauso utero he should have "made shipwreck of the faith".
BP Clark's sermon on TV this morning will have done a lot of good.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Communion instead of relationship

If one substitutes for "relationship" the word "communion" - then could have said: every Christian is in a real (though sometimes imperfect) communion with the Roman Catholic Church. One could say same thing not only about individual separated brethren but about their "churches or ecclesial communities". cf "The Theology of Vatican II' pp 124-134.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Forwarding a letter about pilgrimages in Walsingham

Forwarding a letter from Rev Vassily James, whose anthropologist father (Rev Professor O E James) the Bishop knew. The letter is described as being critical of a Catholic pilgrimage to Walsingham. This, he passes on to Bishop Clark for his action, with the author's permission.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Irregular marriages; draft Marriage document

Meetings of the Working Party on the Pastoral aspect of irregular marriages. Going to see Derek Worlock in Liverpool but should have done his homework for the meeting in 3rd week of October.
Wrote to David Norris to criticise two statements in the draft Canon Law document on Marriage - must not use the word "murder" for abortion - guess what the other point was!

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Morality of War - [Leonard] Cheshire

Thanks for a copy of [Leonard?] Cheshire's talk about the Morality of War. Advises that this should not be published by CTS as Cheshire's reputation is very great and Bishop Butler fears this defence of war would encourage complacency. Also, publication by CTS might seem to accord the views with a semi-official Catholic status.
Finds the arguments unconvincing and could state his criticisms at length if asked to do so. Notes he says nothing about nuclear war.
manuscript annotation: "Asked Bp. Butler to write to Cheshire (Letter 25-x-1979)"

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Objections to his views

Interested to hear how Dick Stewart disagrees with Bishop Butlers statements and what Bishop Clark feels he needs to forgive Bishop Butler for. Suspects that he was "'rocking the boat' - the unforgivable sin." Hopes Dick [Stewart] will do good in Rome. Suspects that Leslie Brown thinks Bishop Butler has broken with "Cabinet Solidarity" - "What I really think is that many people do not like my implied ecclesiology. I'm sorry they don't like it, because I am sure it is true!!"

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Reconciling historical and metaphysical approaches; "Faith" attack

Sorry Bp Clark cannot attend the clergy In-Service Training . Fitzpatrick / Von Hugel - problem of reconciling the historical and the metaphysical approaches to reality. Disregarded the latest attack in "Faith" - quoting my letter without permission. The Nun's action was not representative; Dick Sutherland and two others came up with the same name for her.

Butler, Basil Edward Christopher Rev OSB (1902-1986)

Bishop Butler to Bishop Clark: Talk at UEA; accommodation at White House

Having been asked to preach at the Chaplaincy in UEA (University of East Anglia) on 28 October 1979, asks if he could stay overnight at the White House.
Also notes that his statement in the Times has stirred up a hornets' nest. "... Archbishop of Cardiff saying he agreed with every word of my statement; makes me feel I must have been gravely mistaken!"
Manuscript note that he'd be happy if Bishop Clark said no as he does not wish to impose.

Bishop Cary-Elwes notes on proposal for trustees for endowment from JE Banham

The notes contain the proposals for the trustees for the Banham £1000 endowment:

  1. The Bishop of Northampton is always a trustee
  2. The Abbot of Downside (or an OSB appointee) is the second for as long as the Beccles remains a Benedictine mission - goes to Northampton Diocese if that ceases
  3. A lay trustee from Beccles congregation in consultation with the Beccles' rector and Bishop of Northampton.
Write to RE Banham, the Abbot of Downside to this effect.
