Rome's decision on Sr Monica took time with three abbots and a Bishop against the move.
Outlines some family difficulties within Gillingham Hall not being helped by Fr Pillot's abusive letter to the Colonel. Glad to see the end of the line of foreign priests at Gillingham and with the removal of Fr Pillot the tyranny has come to an end. "A sad business."

The policy on this was formulated by Bp Riddell. The seat of the old Walsingham shrine was utterly destroyed - nothing remains except for some ruins in Protestant hands. King's Lynn was where Leo XIII placed the shrine. What the Anglicans do is their affair. Some Catholics think differently and advertise their pilgrimages in the Tablet - until he contacted the Tablet. Continue to remind enquirers that the shrine is at King's Lynn, an old port through which the bulk of pilgrims from the Continent made their way to the famous old Shrine.
Apologies for the shortness of the letter as still in bed with pneumonia.

Fr Beauchamp: A "Secret and Confidential" Government communication was received by an aerodrome chaplain. What has been received from Catholic HQ?
My man destroyed the letter and resigned as chaplain- better if he had stayed, refused to comply, been dismissed, and we could have had a little row about it!
Please advise on consensus so I could use it to benefit other less distinguished Chaplains.

Provides an indication of his complicated arrangements for visiting the area. Apologises for treating everyone shabbily: has to include Gillingham (Mrs Kenyon), Beccles (Fr Campbell), Bungay (Fr MacEvoy), Woodbridge and Wroxham (Traffords) in one visit with no motorcar available.

Suggest Wednesday July 2nd - arriving on the day as have another appointment in the area. Sorry to hear about Dr Helsham, his Jesuit brother gave a poor account of it. Cyril Banham is doing well - have to curb his enthusiasm to keep him within his health compass.

Responding to an article written by Fr Devas on Pg 15 of Farm Street Calendar. Believes Fr Devas to have preached at a Whit-Sunday procession in Prices Risborough.
Provides a long history of the shrine in King's Lynn and includes the Indult from Rome in the original Italian. The bishop says he was at the procession of the statue from the station to the church and its emplacement.
"I welcome the new honour that is being paid to Our Lady of W. at Sudbury in Middlesex, but I cannot for a moment allow that that place has discovered a forgotten and dead devotion, nor that it can compete for a moment with the shrine at King's Lynn which was opened with the special blessing of Pope Leo XIII, and holds its place officially as the successor and representative of the ancient and glorious shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham which our deluded ancestors destroyed."

A terse letter to Fr Heptonstall regarding the "Secret and Confidential" Government communication: unwise to burn it; over hasty action - should have conferred with RC Chaplain at Halton to establish common response; common sense to send it to your superior - i.e. the Bishop; you cannot afford to undertake work "free gratis for nothing" better to state you cannot comply, instead of a "retirement stunt"; acted too much on impulse - a little habit of yours which does not help and gets you into trouble; your position would have been strengthened if you had taken the same line as others.
Bishop will write to Fr Beauchamp to establish the line the Catholic Chaplains are taking.

Faculties for Fr Sproule granted, including for the nuns if required. Send names of the two ladies and the Bishop will contact Rome. Invitation to stay tempting, but too full up for now. Sorry no intentions - see if he can invent some. St Neots opening was nice but cruel hard luck for the enforced absence of Fr Malone.

Bickerdike was one of many excluded when the Beati list was winnowed from 250 as over 100 were turned down - perhaps later. Be careful about managing the fund (permission granted) and keep the monies for building/support separate from other monies. Recognise the need in such missions to harvest in-season to weather the off-season. Take care about the Squire - he has to change his ways before being received into the church. Exhortation to be prudent, discipline of a "common sense hardness".
