Rejects Downside Provincial (Abbot H E Moore) suggestion that Beccles district and Diss district should come under one priest at Bungay. Rather the Bishop will keep to the current boundaries - Diss and west of railway line will be Beccles' area. Asks the Abbot to appoint a priest to serve Beccles and start a mission there - may reside at Bungay for now.

Just returned form Rome on Friday.
"... I quite approve of the transfer of the site of Bungay Church & Schools, in fact the whole property, to trustees appointed by the President General of the Benedictines, the Rt Rev P O'Neill. But I think that a clause shld be inserted to this effect 'if at any time the English Benedictines decide to give up serving the mission then the trustees shall transfer the whole property to trustees appointed by the Roman Catholic Bishop having spiritual jurisdiction or presiding over the Roman Catholics of Bungay'".
[postscript:] "I hope your Grace has got over the difficulty at Norwich: the non-completion of the church is costing me £120 a year."

Will speak to Simon [Blakesley] soon but thinks it may be best for all to leave him there. This, and the issue of transfer of the parish back to the diocese, will be discussed with the Vicars General next week.

Confirming the arrangement for Beccles and will review in the Autumn of 2001.

Matter reviewed with Fr Simon Blakesley, the College of Consultors and the Vicars General. Agreement that an appointment for 5 years as parish priest would bring stability and time for various pastoral projects. Intent to induct Fr Simon on 26 January and review the appointment in 5 years time - April/May 2000.

Agrees that the approach is correct for the priest. Brendan has been sent home to Dublin so the atmosphere in the presbytery should return to normal.

Approve request from Kesgrave community in St Mary's parish, Ipswich, to have a representative on the DPC.

Bishop Cary quotes a letter to Fr Delaney dated 19/12/1919 from Bishop Keating. In it the £110 from Sr Superior (Ursulines) for 4 annual Masses and a commemorative tablet in the new [Aldeburgh] church has been invested by the Board of Finance. It is the wish of the community that £50 given to Canon Tonks last August should be added to the larger sum and used for the Endowment or Building Fund. Bishop Keating is willing for the surplus to be used as such but notes that she does not wish it to be used the temporary Oratory.
Bishop Cary directs Canon Tonks to look at the books at about or anterior to that date.

Delighted that Fr Davidson in contemplating setting up a Guild and sends his most cordial blessing for it. The Holy Father has commanded that wherever it is possible that such Guilds be established in a parish. Provides some views on the value and effects of such a guild. Also cannot attend for the Annunciation, but will be there in spirit.
