The Sealed Instrument of Management for the school is in diocesan files. Bishop to appoint four Foundation Managers - send a list of names and addresses and include your own name.
In Peterborough, we plan to build a secondary Modern School - the minister will not remove senior children until there is a place for them. Without such a school the LEA can take 11+ children when they wish.
Suggestions about approaches Fr Ketterer may wish to take to avoid the school being decapitated. Difficult to judge costs in the circumstances but they would have to be born by Fr Ketterer.
Bishop says cannot borrow trust money for the school. Will visit on Wednesday next week.
Accepts the Bishops offer to be a Governor of Notre Dame School - it's a while since he last did this sort of work at Farnham Royal First & Middle schools. His present trouble leaves him unwell and limited in performing his duties. The doctor thinks the Hepatitis should have cleared up and Fr Brown is waiting for an appointment for X-rays & scans. He knows he will be happy in Wymondham but feels sorry for the people as they must think they have another invalid.
Brown, Peter RevFR Brown is aware that Fr Bernard Jones is leaving Quidenham. He asks the Bishop to consider Wymondham and him when making a new appointment. The Quidenham/Attleborough area is supported by Fr Jones and Fr Brown would appreciate the appointment of a "not too 'unusual'" priest who could continue the support his burdens in his declining years.
Brown, Peter RevFr Chapman did not know Abbot Haworth was leaving Quidenham. He considers that Fr Crowther should have Attleborough and the villages to the South. Without Attleborough things would be easier as the parish too extensive to cover properly. Fr Chapman has been putting the Attleborough collection into a Diocesan account - some £1600 now - which the Bishop had agreed to. He did this since the attitude of their parish council showed him to be a stranger and they were covered by the Abbot anyway. He has only said mass their once but in four years he knows many of the Catholics - they are all right - but they "want to paddle their own canoe".
Manuscript annotation: "Archbishop Worlock - against appointment of Fr Crowther."
Financial situation needs clarification. On the telephone the Bishop had said that Blakeney is the VG's responsibility.
Note that this arrangement is for 6 months - a breathing space - whilst we consider what is to be done.
Fr Malacki expects to move in on 6 October.
Suggest that the official hand over date is 9 September. Fr Richmond is happy to work at St Henry's indefinitely and Fr Arthur will go to Saltdean in Sussex to be cared for by his family.
Clark, Hilary Rev SDSFr Richmond has been found a chaplaincy with the Dominican Sisters in Bushey.
Fr Georgio Malecki SDS will be available for St Henry's for at least six months form 1st October. Has worked in four parishes, with the last 4 years as an assistant priest in Wealdstone. An excellent priest and it is time for him to gain experience in running a parish. Can you grant the necessary faculties?
Fr Richmond is 77. He has been at Burnham Market for three years and is requesting less responsibility. Salvatorians do not have a replacement priest available and give notice that after July/August 1989 they may not be able to supply a priest for Burnham Market.
Clark, Hilary Rev SDSFr Edward Rockliff has gone North to give a retreat and some Lenten missions and has left Fr Courtney to look after two Ne Temere cases. He wants to get them to the bishop soon. He then provides some background details of each case and states that Fr Rockliff is satisfied there are no impediments to progressing. Fr Rockliff having been an Army chaplain and served at the front gave one of the parties a good talking to, it is expected that this man will now behave himself.
Manuscript annotation: "Sent both Dispensations. No 2 being conditional on freedom and baptism. Mar 3/25"
Fr Coventry writing as Provincial on the transfer of Great Yarmouth parish from the Jesuits to Northampton Diocese. Fr Dennis has advised that the Fr Diamond is to take over. Fr Coventry says that if this transfer should be delayed until 1962 then it would help him in "the re-absorption of men into other work". He does this because he believed that this would have been the date and had offered Richmond, Yorkshire to the Bishop of Middlesborough, which has been accepted. Fr Evans could stay as curate for another year if desired.
Coventry, John Rev SJFr Cowin sends details of the night storage heaters installed in Wymondham Church. The Bishop's mention of the chaplaincy at St Joseph's interests Fr Cowin a lot and he would like to take it up soon. He will say the two masses daily and save the Christian Brothers from having to replace Fr Clare. Having his mother to live with him would not increase his expenses and she is happy to go with him.
Cowin, Malcom Rev (1906-1984)writing from Holy Cross Church, Bedford
Has been in contact with Fr Liam Crowley. The Provincial Council projections seem good for Bretton. Agree that if they want to then Liam and Arnold can stay where they are. Cannot commit any more resources e.g. to Our Lady of Lourdes. Not always able to match me to jobs and vice versa. Uncertain about Paddy Smyth and Liam Crowley working together.
Refers to the Tenerife Air Disaster. After 2.5 years at Oxmoor and with the current set-up he does not see a future for it. Suggest that it be run from St Michael's, and Ramsey placed with Whittlesey. Own preference is for Our lady of Lourdes, Peterborough or, Whittlesey/Ramsey. Hears that St Oswalds' might be available - Fr Byron not said anything - but would be interested.
Crowley, Liam Rev SS CC (-2019)Discussing the Huntingdon assignment. Will be in Acton for September. Perhaps 6 months with his friend Fr Grace (from Aylesbury) before making a decision. Suggests a one year assignment
Crowley, Liam Rev SS CC (-2019)Have discussed with the Provincial, Fr Fintan Crotty. The assignment is unusual for the congregation, but would hope it leads to something more permanent. However will review after six months.
Crowley, Liam Rev SS CC (-2019)Writing as Superior requesting approval for two priests to be sent to S Mary's in Yarmouth - Fr Bernard Weatherhead and Fr Ernest Vignaux
D'Arcy, Martin Cyril Rev SJRecommends Fr David Finegan for the new Dean
Dasan, Vima Rev SJFr O'Mahoney of Xalapa, Mexico grateful for the £100 for the poor and £100 for his presbytery.
Fr Davenport may be off to Pakistan and India.
manuscript postscript: "Sr Leonora has moved to another mission. I'm waiting to hear from her any day now"
Fr Dennis writing to the Bishop about being sent to Great Yarmouth. Knows a little of the Bishop having met him in Bournemouth and gives assurance of bring punctilious in looking after the souls in his care. He has some commitments in March/April and July and suggests Fr James Evans as a "vicarius substitutus".
