Covering letter for the enclosed 1982 financial statement. The parish is overspending and £70 per week for a housekeeper for one priest is excessive. Miss Scarfe, the housekeeper, had intended to retire on her 60th birthday but the death of Fr Chapman had led her to offer to stay on for a couple months. Fr Farrell considers voluntary help will be sufficient. He has asked Peter Wilson to provide forms & leaflets to promote a covenant drive to address the lost revenue. He closes by saying these steps are necessary.

Farrell, H J RevUnderstands the issues with Blakeney but does not think he will have any financial problems with his private income and money from the Church). When would the Bishop like him to start, after Canon Higham leaves on 20th October?
Finch, Michael Rev (-1986)The drainage system has been a problem for many years but now it is completely blocked. A tree needs taking down to help repair work to progress. Unfortunately after a series of bad seasons the parish funds cannot pay for the work. Ask the Bishop for help and approval to proceed with the work.
Flynn, Charles S Rev (-1943)Thanks the Bishop effusively for his kindness. The motor is most beneficial enabling travel. It was mostly a gift supplemented by the sale of his motorcycle - "the boys enabled me to run it at not a very great cost". Seldom been so long without a pupil for his private classes which helped defray expenses. Expects some endowment which may add to £1,000 for Hunstanton and enable a successor to build a church. May replace the motorcar with a cycle-car (uses a motorcycle engine) and can run for 50 miles on a gallon of petrol.
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)Good midnight Mass attendance & 30 communicants. Not well - ulcerated stomach. Money is very difficult; been covering costs out of own pocket, but cannot now; he requests a loan of £25 to relieve the strain until Summer. Trying to get another foreign boy who could help in the season. Young Le Strange (from the Hall in Hunstanton) has been a regular Sunday Mass attendee for 3 months and it is possible he could be received in to the church; there is another well known person under instruction. His efforts are hampered by this "miserable High Church movement", which keeps a lot away from the Church, "what a ghastly mockery of the Church it is, yet intelligent people swallow it."
Garnett, Ernest Edmund Rev (1872-1948)Fr Birch has discussed with you that money is taken for Marist purposes: Staff costs (Director, Marist Fathers and Sisters) vehicle running costs
Graystone, Henry Rev SM (1928-2019)Written to thank Mgr Stark for cheque received. The Bundocks expect to move into Norwich very soon.
Graystone, Philip Rev SM (1921-2014)Following Bishop Grant's survey of churches and presbyteries it was decided that King's Lynn needed doing first. The work has to go before the finance board. Recommended solution is to replace gas fires with oil-fired boilers. Estimates have gone to Mr Boon the surveyor. Allflatt did the sanctuary for £400 less than others. More work to be done.
p.s "May I remind you about the question of re-consecrating the altar when you come on November 30th?"
Met Fr Richmond, Fr Murphy & Canon Mossey - all agree boundaries would take Burnham Thorpe, North Creake and South Creake from Well; and, Brancaster, Docking and Stanhoe from Hunstanton - about 36 - 40 square miles. Fr Richmond thinks the parish is financially comfortable (I think he lives a very spartan existence). Fr Hammond did a Dean's report in 1974 and found the property to be in good shape.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Healthy financially - £7,000 dicesan savings and £2,000 in a deposit account, no large bills outstanding. Talking about enlarging the school; need £3,500 as our share of the chared church at Fairstead. Suicide of the Hon. Mrs Rosemary Dawnay.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Bishop Clark has said that Bishop Grant wishes to see the contract. Documents enclosed [not present]. Have moved into our part of the Centre a few weeks ago. Our share is £5,000.
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)Visitation was delight. Apologises for the Finance Committee's letter - they were asked to point out that he was not associated with their comments. Committee will be convened when John Lanning returns from holiday in Italy. Hopes the bishop "got suited re Housekeeper".
Hammond, Leo Andrew Rev (1913-1999)£1,000 parish money for investment. Bishop suggested a new car - so bought a Chevette L. Arrangements to be for deprecation against parish funds.
manuscript annotation: "After allowing 13% discount the cost of the car could be put at £2,000"
Grateful for picture of Martyrs. Through the Bishop's work with Catholic Records Society, can the Bishop explain why the Venerable Robert Bickerdike (martyred at York) was not included in the Beati? He is an ancestor. William Bickerdike of High Bentham Lanes is his 2nd cousin. Requests permission to establish a fund with 3 options: 1. for the building of a permanent church; 2. using the interest to help the priest; 3. as an endowment. Current earnings are 17/- to 20/- per week (off season) and £3 to £5 (in season). The Squire gave a remarkable speech at the Silver Jubilee - a possible convert?
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Mgr Freeland says estimates for work at Hunstanton was sent on to the Finance Board. Not hearing anything, but needing to get the work done before the estimate is revised he has had painting done, a new oven, a new copper and received a rates demand recently. If the Board can relieve him of the debt, £29, it would help.
Heptonstall, Donald V Rev (-1954)Covering letter for a financial statement [not present]. Fr Gamm CMF had started a football pool and the proceeds (~£50) are held at the Tristee Bank - they will be transferred to the parish account at the end of the season. Asks for £40 to get him out of the hands of his creditors.
Howlin, Laurence F, RevSide 1: letter - Fr Thomson's letter indicates that the parish boundary was drawn between East and West Perry. Brej=kden convenient for both except on Holydays when there is 7am Mass at the Borstal. Mentions 2 separate covenants.
