Nobody about as the works is off for 10 days and all have gone on holiday. Leaving Wellingborough for Hunstanton and will stay for a few days as full of visitors who come for daily mass. Will be discrete in sounding people out so as not to give away his real objective. If Fr Flynn is at home then why no notice posted on the church door? He thinks something is not right and will see the Bishop when he leaves. Fr Hyde can stay till he returns [at Wellingborough?]

Thanks the Bishop effusively for his kindness. The motor is most beneficial enabling travel. It was mostly a gift supplemented by the sale of his motorcycle - "the boys enabled me to run it at not a very great cost". Seldom been so long without a pupil for his private classes which helped defray expenses. Expects some endowment which may add to £1,000 for Hunstanton and enable a successor to build a church. May replace the motorcar with a cycle-car (uses a motorcycle engine) and can run for 50 miles on a gallon of petrol.

Good midnight Mass attendance & 30 communicants. Not well - ulcerated stomach. Money is very difficult; been covering costs out of own pocket, but cannot now; he requests a loan of £25 to relieve the strain until Summer. Trying to get another foreign boy who could help in the season. Young Le Strange (from the Hall in Hunstanton) has been a regular Sunday Mass attendee for 3 months and it is possible he could be received in to the church; there is another well known person under instruction. His efforts are hampered by this "miserable High Church movement", which keeps a lot away from the Church, "what a ghastly mockery of the Church it is, yet intelligent people swallow it."

Fr Garnett has the funds for a Presbytery - a friend has promised £1,000. Compares his approach with the Cromer house and church. Expects to build: Dining room & study; WC next to larder; window near the porch; no back staircase; 5 bedrooms instead of seven. The presbytery would be given to the Diocese and Fr Garnett will be responsible for all funding and costs. This is a variation to the present scheme which will deliver Boys' Sacristy, Priest's Sacristy and Reception room next to the house. Must have a housekeeper's room - details what it would be used for, especially to give the housekeeper her own space.
If the Bishop could reply by return then Fr Garnett will catch the early Tuesday train to London to see the Architect.

Sorry to hear the bell has fallen through the roof - illustrates the need for a periodical inspection of all ecclesiastic buildings. Sketch and description of the belfry at Hunstanton. Considers the school chimney stacks at Bury St Edmunds which had to be replaced lest a child get killed by one falling. Offers advice on keeping the chimney cleaned. Not kept bell bill - installed around 1907-1909 - but provides [not present] supplier's address. If Fr Flynn had not take away the bound log book with St Edmund K & M [sic] Hunstanton, I used to keep details of benefactors, gifts, dates, photos and anything of interest about the mission. "Goodness knows what it was to him."

Personal Loan from the Finance Board; will increase insurance policy from £75 to £100; Canon Tonks to fill in the form and send to Century Insurance in Ipswich. Not at all well. Lady Winefride has invited him to stay - so he will go one Sunday in Lent. Can the Poor Mission Fund do something for Hunstanton. "I have had a rotten time & am likely to while the war lasts & even afterwards for a time while people recover the strain on their resources."

Sending Canon Tonks the premium for the policy. Going on retreat at St Edmunds given by Fr Hugh Pope OP, Prior of Woodchester, a nice man I am told. "... retreats, usually depress me & do me no good I fancy...". Fr Cameron is here and it's a good opportunity as Old Hall is nearer and less expensive than further afield. "Fr Parker must have had a bad smash as I hear he can't say Mass yet."

Met Fr Richmond, Fr Murphy & Canon Mossey - all agree boundaries would take Burnham Thorpe, North Creake and South Creake from Well; and, Brancaster, Docking and Stanhoe from Hunstanton - about 36 - 40 square miles. Fr Richmond thinks the parish is financially comfortable (I think he lives a very spartan existence). Fr Hammond did a Dean's report in 1974 and found the property to be in good shape.

At St Neots the Bishop did not look well - have a couple of days at the [Hunstanton] seaside to restore you. 3 favours: granting of faculties to Rev Stephen Sproule CSSR who is coming to give a course of instruction; dispensation for an old woman regarding Eucharist; one of the Sisters is troubled with operations and needs medicine during the night, or a cup of tea - a dispensation for her too. Quite hard-up and would welcome any Mass Intentions that the Bishop may have.

Involved in a motor accident when a motorcyclist hit the vehicle Fr was in. Sisters have asked that confessions are heard after Saturday mass at the Convent - the poor weather makes journeys to church trying. Ask for Bishop's permission. Time are hard and he has received few Mass Intentions - could he have some more? Also asking for permission to have a private retreat when a CSSR priest gives a mission in Hunstanton in May.

Presented with a "Secret and Confidential" Government by RAF at the camp. May not divulge contents, but, Daily Press and House of Commons are debating "Prayers for Russian Subjects". Copy of reply to RAF Adjutant is enclosed.
Slight tummy trouble else all well. Could do with a few more spare Mass Intentions.

[Hansard, Volume 76: debated on Thursday 6 March 1930; column 807, THE DUKE OF ATHOLL quoted:
              "To all General Officers Commanding.

"With reference to my letter of the 27th February, I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you that His Majesty's Government, in order to remove any possible misunderstanding, wish it to be generally understood that officers and other ranks may not be compulsorily paraded to the intercessory services, but they are free to attend voluntary services of an intercessory character.

"In cases whore troops attend parade services at places of worship other than garrison churches, officers and other ranks will not be compulsorily paraded to any service where intercessory prayers for Russian subjects are to be made.

              1. Mrs Emmaline Ann Shauve - an old lady of 89 with asthma

Grateful for picture of Martyrs. Through the Bishop's work with Catholic Records Society, can the Bishop explain why the Venerable Robert Bickerdike (martyred at York) was not included in the Beati? He is an ancestor. William Bickerdike of High Bentham Lanes is his 2nd cousin. Requests permission to establish a fund with 3 options: 1. for the building of a permanent church; 2. using the interest to help the priest; 3. as an endowment. Current earnings are 17/- to 20/- per week (off season) and £3 to £5 (in season). The Squire gave a remarkable speech at the Silver Jubilee - a possible convert?

Received the mass intentions and the dispensations - 5/- fee enclosed. Severe cold from downpour in Lynn Pilgrimage and was wet through. Congregations from Hunstanton (25), Lynn (150) and Swaffham (50) went to Oxborough for their Procession, greatly pleasing Sir Henry and Lady Bedingfeld.
