Ordination applicants need to be in full communion for a while before Rome considers them. Outstanding matter needs to be addressed prior to the other becoming a candidate. Need to consider the reader's future role carefully. Chris Toller will be in touch with Paul Hirons about the bungalow soon.

Bishop Thomas Joseph Brown issued this instruction on mixed marriages as increasing numbers of Catholic-Protestant marriages were taking place in England and Wales. These caused concern to the Catholic clergy, as the Catholic partners may be influenced by their Protestant spouses and eventually abandon their faith.

This instruction provided guidance on how to handle mixed marriages. It emphasised the importance of preserving the Catholic faith in these marriages and urged Catholic partners to do all they could to ensure that their children were raised as Catholics.

The instruction also provided guidance on the proper way to celebrate mixed marriages, emphasizing the importance of obtaining a dispensation from the bishop and requiring the non-Catholic partner to sign a written agreement promising to respect the Catholic faith and to allow the Catholic partner to practice their religion.

Back from Australia at the beginning of the week. Happy with the programme. Be there for 9.30 am Mass and preach at the others. Visitation of the sick could be done on Sunday or he could come over again on Monday afternoon. In the evening he has to be in Lynn for a Penitential Service.

Repeats the content of the original letter from Rev Dr Franz Fellinger and encloses the interrogatory (not available) to be put to Mr B Boulos. The Bishop delegates Fr Courtney to do this in the presence of a responsible person to act as a notary.
Side 2, Notary's handwritten record of answers to the questions put:
"1. Yes I have been disarrayed.

              1. The accusation is false.
              2. Indignantly denies having been to house of prostitution
              3. Denies walking out with a dancing woman or any woman.
              4. It is not true denies both points of accusation

Bishop thinks the programme is excellent. One request. He wishes to administer a Baptism in Brantham on 14 October (part of St Mark's parish, Ipswich). Ann has organised well and arranged supper on Saturday with John & Pauline Matthias - are you coming too?

Sacrament of Reconciliation advice - "it is the sin that needs (and can be) to be absolved rather than release from the penalty incurred. Make a prudent judgement and decide whether the penitent has really incurred the 'latae sententiae'".
The visitation is in danger of being overloaded - whilst the Bishop is not allergic to work the programme is not without confusion - can Fr Kerby puzzle out a less complicated agenda for his Bishop?!

Bishop happy to bless Fr Kerby's pastoral action to share in the "gnadenreiche Zeit" of Christmas. Bishop details his travel plans for Jonathan Salt's diaconate ordination in Innsbruck and invites Fr Kerby to join them - Nick Kearney is travelling with him & Jonathan is joining them from Munich. Bishop comments on Salt being too intent on the "material" celebration - "I beg our dear Jonathan to apply himself to his studies and to delay designing the invitation cards!"

Confirmation on 14 January 1996. Bishop thanks Fr Kerby for wondeul hospitality at a great occasion and a lovely atmosphere during the Mass. Bishop did speak to many people and they seemed happy with everything. Thanks for the generous cheque. Enjoyed meeting Lucien who gave him quite an insight into Eastern Catholic Churches.

Depends on percentage already preparing for Confirmation. If numbers small then willingly waive new stipulation regarding age. If majority "underage" , then might have to rethink. Dubious about reasons for Mums' disquiet. Rather inclined to say "yes" to a busy Parish priest. "Just reassure me on the points raised".

Bishop is not a "fundamentalist" on the issue of age of Confirmation. Fr Kerby should warn his people in the New Year that in future (underlined) candidates will be from 14+ group. His case pled with skill and subtlety. Important to hold the group together expecting Confirmation in the near future. Please do as you wish.

Re ordination of John Gardner to Diaconate: Bishop requires testimonials from Fr Philpot & Fr Rogers. If time is right for John, then Bishop can come on Friday 16 July 1982.
Re 50th anniversary of Papworth Church, 18 June 1982 is out for the Bishop but perhaps the Chancellor can stand in for him?

Thanks for the kind letter and generous cheque. Bishop thoroughly enjoyed the Visitation and was heartened by the number of Confirmations and full attendance at the Masses. Thanks Fr Kerby for all he has done for so many years at the parish. Thank Elizabeth and Ann for their parish work and hospitality over the weekend. Excellent news that the new hall can now go ahead, please convey gratitude to Daphne Reid and all who have helped to bring this about.
