Thanks for the full account of things at Billing. Will make arrangements with Fr Cary-Elwes to be there on June 21. Captain & Mrs Throckmorton lost their little boy "Dickie" after an operation. He was 8 and a half. Funeral at St Benet's tomorrow.
manuscript annotation: "Written to Mr Throckmorton June 17/27"
Will make arrangements with Fr Cary Elwes at Billing. Alternative arrangements to be made about housekeeper (the one he had in mind has booked a passage to America but she will come). "Again thanking you for you letter and the et cetera in which my mother joins"
manuscript annotation: "The date arranged with two Jesuits is June 30"
Catholic Education Commission (CEC) application form refers. The LEA refuses a fare grant for Downham Market children as they travel more than 5 miles (i.e. 13 and 16 miles). Is there anything the Diocesan Schools Commission can do?
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Covering letter to an Editor [not specified] for a statement on Downham Market. Requests that 24 copies of the issue should the statement appear.
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Invited to offer the traditional Mass at Newcastle on 8 August. Telling the Bishop through courtesy following his admonition in the Catholic Press. Questions whether his reasoning can be found by the Bishop to be at fault. Offers Fr Wathen's "The Great Sacrilege" as an non-refutable authority. Fr Baker is trying to do God's Will - not defiant to authority but does not agree with the requirement for blind and unquestioning obedience.
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Birthday wishes for 8th to Bishop. Will need time reflect before making any comment.
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Income in the parish has increased - so, not living on a "pittance". Willing to accept position as a curate so that the parish priest from Swaffham does not have to travel to Downham. His weekly visit to the convent in Swaffham means he could easily report to the PP. Changes would be detrimental to this parish. Suggest that any priest free to officiate do so at Oxburgh instead. Not impelled to move; willing to stay.
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Sorry about unfortunate Anglia TV broadcast - do there best but slipped up on terminology and facts. More sorry about any intemperate letters and will let it be known that they are deplored.
Baker, Oswald Charles Rev (1915-2004)Acquisition of a mobile classroom at Costessey indicates it is possible to acquire one for St Martha's from the Minor Works Allocation.
Usually need the support of LEA when putting a case to DES, which would prefer a permanent construction. Offers an order of priorities for the School Managers.
Encloses Form 65 School [not present] for completion and other data. Asks if he has Form 48 Schools (for claiming grant for bills).
Bailey, Patrick Rev (1932-2022)Application for the loan to go ahead. Diocese can use any money not tied to the job. Asl for 20% of the amount in the Quantity Surveyor's assessment. Details process for managing/authorising money from the loan.
manuscript annotations on the letter - working notes.
Seems that parents are asking for a comprehensive school for 150-200 pupils. Given that schools of 400+ in Cambridge, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds are struggling to survive - "you would not have the proverbial snowball's chance in hell!". "..enough to reinforce your views.."
Bailey, Patrick Rev (1932-2022)Diocese authorises the purchase of a mobile classroom under the Aided Minor Works programme. Need approval by the DES - which would be doubtful given past correspondence - ".. best of British!".
Bailey, Patrick Rev (1932-2022)Refers to a long email sent previously. Has had to Trinate on Sundays after putting on an extra Mass. Has consulted with Fr Walsh. Asks for a faculty for this until Michaelmas.
Back, Christopher G E Rev MA (-2014)Fr Back has been in hospital for 3 days with pancreatitis. Description of his condition and stay in hospital. Sees in his diary that he has been out to 40 meals since just before Christmas! Situation report about the Parish: re-heating done; repair programme for presbytery (no longer up for sale); site at Leiston; more children at liturgy; 2 receptions for Eater; assemblies at school; contacting B&Bs and hotels; expects to be chaplain to the Mayor; coach booked for Chrism Mass. Forward look to exchange with priest in London; Verona for a week; first Communions and then Aldeburgh Festival.
Back, Christopher G E Rev MA (-2014)writing from 7 Jubilee Court, Queen Street, King's Lynn. Summer supply in Canada (Sacred Heart Presbytery, Regina, Sasketuan). Flat keys form either Fr Hammond or #6. "Peter" might be able to get shower fixed after a word with the agents. Settled here - but has back trouble.
Atkinson, Reginald C Rev (-1983)Ill health compels him to leave. Not felt up to it for 8 months - medical advice is to leave and take a course of treatment in the hope of better health. Sorry to leave; enjoyed being in the parish and Diocese of East Anglia. Fr Richmond ready to take over.
Arthur, Francis Rev SDSSigning himself as Frank Arthur SDS, he knows that Fr Richmond is not continuing at Massingham but the Bishop's mention of rumours of Fr Arthur going there have caused him to think that he might like to do so. His health is not good but Burnham Market is not heavy work.
Arthur, Francis Rev SDSFr Richmond is having his 40th Ordination celebrations at Burnham Market on 19 March - concelebrated Mass followed by buffet at Hoste Arms across The Green. Bishop is invited (but it is noted that he is in Walsingham on that day).
