Banbury Commercial Buildings LtdExcellent start: rent-free house and gardens; sites for Aldeburgh & Leiston chapels secured. Need to check on conveyance restrictions and re-convey the buildings to Diocesan Trustees (suggested names: Bishop, Fr Delaney, Fr Hugh Parker, Fr Austin O'Sullivan), take your solicitor's advice. Model Trust Deed available. Leiston chapel seems cheap - but need to consider extension in the future, hence make the walls higher to avoid tunnel appearance. For maintenance, use Mission receipts, but in the intervening months Bishop would provide funds through the Poor Mission Fund (Canon Ashmole will send an application form).
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Application for Poor Mission Fund, make it payable from 1st Jan. but not it is retrospective so first instalment will be April 1st. Restrictions on plots: Trust deeds to be kept in Diocesan safe. Cannot start building until you have half the money, Bishop will give a substantial donation. Hire Town Hall or similar to obtain a breathing space? Talk to your friend about his intentions for the house - do not risk reversion by being too precipitate - could make use of the chapel as a school or parochial hall.
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)Information about Parish Hall at Leiston to be considered at next Finance Meeting - but not in the immediate future.
Clark, Alan Charles Rev DD (1919-2002)Bishop gives permission to have a Holy Hour at both Aldeburgh and Leiston once a month. He hopes that much good fruit will come from it.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Returns the collections book as requested. Does not think Canon Tonks has any to lend. Is there a desperate need to hurry? Better to keep the Army Hut for entertainments. Keeping well in this rather trying muggy weather?
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Sends the countersigned application. "I hope I have done it proprely[sic]".
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Delighted that Fr Davidson in contemplating setting up a Guild and sends his most cordial blessing for it. The Holy Father has commanded that wherever it is possible that such Guilds be established in a parish. Provides some views on the value and effects of such a guild. Also cannot attend for the Annunciation, but will be there in spirit.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Bishops suggests an informal Visitation at Leiston; formal at Aldeburgh.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Mass at Leiston fine - no breakfast. Assist at 11am Mass in Aldeburgh and preach after Mass to give you the opportunity to get breakfast prior to the Visitation. Glad to be able to inaugurate the Guild of St Felix on Tuesday
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Grants faculties to: Fr Pearce - for convents in Aldeburgh & Woodbridge; Fr Fabian Dix for Aldeburgh, Leiston and the Convents
Does not know how he will get to Aldeburgh with getting to and from Cromer and Woodbridge - a case for an aeroplane!
Regarding the Coats of Arms [on reredos design] does not know what the Cardinal has to do with it - but put in his arms if you wish!
Thanks for looking after church for Jim Mullett
Cannot come to see Fr Reeman - how are the presbytery alterations coming on? Leiston old church site not yet sold. What prospects as money is needed for Leiston?
Parker, Thomas Leo Rev (1887-1975)Bishop Keating considers 20ft x 68 ft hut is adequate, and a bargain at £90. He will give the money to the Mission provided:
- site is free of restrictions,
- Fr Delaney approves and supports this
- Congregation guarantee to obtain the funds for everything else - removal, re-erection, fittings and furnishings.
Their zeal and generosity gave the Bishop great satisfaction.
Cheque for £90 made out to Mr A Gibbs enclosed. "He must be very hard up, or very dubious about our credit!"
Keating, William Frederick Rev (1859-1928)£20 for Leiston boys will come from Lenten Alms. Problems arranging for priests to cover certain areas e.g. Diss, Eye, Framlingham where there are tiny congregations. Bishop does not have enough priests to meet the needs such as a Travelling Mission, but hopes this will improve in time. The Franciscans have taken over East Bergholt and will be well used. Do not know of any house-keeper - not the only one to ask - domestic situation is getting bad.
Bishop's OfficeWill transfer what is necessary when Fr Reeman says. Apologises for the mess made of Aldeburgh v Leiston, sometimes instructions from Northampton are very obscure. As both are Fr Reeman's he will "cook the books according to your recipe!"
Hunting, William H Rev (-1969)Receipt for cheque (£11.1.3) received regarding supply work done by Fr H Irwin at Aldeburgh. The account includes 10/- a week for the housekeeper.
Peacock, Augustine Peter Rev (1864-1956)A demand by Mr Yorke for £215 is incorrect. Purchase money for Leiston site was collected by Leiston people. "The nun" left £40 in your hands for purchase of land in Aldeburgh, and a further sum with the Bishop sufficient to complete the purchase of £150. You should contact Mr Yorke and explain the mistake.
Tonks, Joseph Rev (1863-1943)
