Lenten Pastoral Letter given in Ipswich
Dispensations for Lent 1860

From Ipswich. Recognising the poverty of this Diocese, he asks that priests to collect for the aid of the Holy Father. Collections to be with the bishop before Low Sunday.

Mrs Hope of Southwold just about to be received into the church (with Fr Mason's consent) when husband fell ill and she cannot leave him. Has requested Fr Stewart to go to Ipswich and receive her there instead. F Stewart asks permission to do this and includes his Westminster faculties [not present].
Manuscript annotation: "Told him he might receive her after communicating with PP in Ipswich, Peacock, and enter name in Ipswich Register countersigned Westminster priest to receive. Feb 1/27."

Approved Guild rules enclosed [not present]. Inaugural High Mass and Dinner in Ipswich - lists a number of invitees. Asks the Bishop to be the first member of the Guild.

Bishop advises that deeds for presbytery (Normanhurst plots 34 & 35?) are with Withams. As is the separate deed for church plot. Good idea to have a church hall, but, all costs, etc. must go through Finance Board, which meets on 26 February. Bishop is at the Convent in Ipswich and could deal with the matter himself if it is urgent. Does Fr Jolly know anything about Mrs Spencer of Thoringham, Saxmundham? May have lunch there and might meet Fr Jolly there too.

A lengthy letter on the realities and differences between various LEAs in the Diocese on paying / supporting financially pupils travelling to and attending distant schools.
Notes that there is a Conference of Catholic Councillors in Harrogate in October - theme "What can LEAs do for our Catholic Schools" . Encourage any catholic LEA members to attend?
"..all we can do is to try for better representation on public bodies and to cultivate good-will. The individual approach in quiet conversation with the Officials and elected Councillors would seem to be most productive of results."

Fr Cowin sends details of the night storage heaters installed in Wymondham Church. The Bishop's mention of the chaplaincy at St Joseph's interests Fr Cowin a lot and he would like to take it up soon. He will say the two masses daily and save the Christian Brothers from having to replace Fr Clare. Having his mother to live with him would not increase his expenses and she is happy to go with him.

Downham Market is an issue on which we must stand - "whatever the personal holiness of Ossie (and God alone is the Judge here), he is corrupting a holy thing - and this is the hidden evil." Unwavering leadership is required. Confront Ossie with the obedience he owes, and, that the Pope has formally specified the circumstances in which the rite may be celebrated.
Tony Sketch should be given Downham market as his charge and say a publicised Mass there.
PPs (Aldeburgh, Wymondham, Felixstowe and Ipswich) make change-over on October 7th.
