Mr R A Hood (Administrator) writes that Fr Rimmer of Manchester mentioned that the Shrine at Walsingham had suffered damage during severe weather. This would require £5000 to repair. Are these facts correct, and are you obtaining reimbursement from insurance? He may make a personal donation to the Shrine.
CAFOD (1960-)Insurance damage claims categorised as "Storm Damage" but many cannot be so covered as the buildings are old or frail. Expense is relatively high not least since 4 pilgrimages have been cancelled. Bishop describes work done - new roof; refurnishing; maintenance and capital repairs. Hence Fr Rimmer's description is not wrong and the outgoings are not all covered by insurance. About to engage an architect to give a plan for the Slipper Chapel area, but, have to find £10,000 for the Chapel alone. If this elicits your [Mr R A Hood, Administrator, CAFOD] charity then I would be exceedingly grateful.

Insurance of the golden crown of the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham. An insured value of £10,000 for the statue which included £6,000 for the crown. You consider that the insured contents of the Slipper chapel is adequate to include the statue itself, but the crown being irreplaceable need not be insured. However whilst it is outside the control of the Diocese you want to insure it for the duration of the Papal visit. Premium is subject to agreement with Catholic National Mutual Ltd and that Papal Visit Ltd. should be debited for it.

Connelly, Roland William Rev SM MA (1921-2004)After discussing Fr Birch's letter of 5 October with Mgr McBride, they have some proposals. First observations:
- financing of Spiritual and Commercial to be kept separate
- the two above are interdependent so any surplus from one should not be spent if the other is in deficit
- Money lent by the Diocese for buildings/repairs must be repaid when they are sold
- Establish £30,000 working capital to carry it through the Winter
- You say the Spiritual side will pay for itself
- Previously approved capital projects will be paid by the Diocese on production of an architect's certificate
- Year end should be brought forward to 30 November
- Shrine Council needs an accurate financial picture; bank statements to be submitted to them each month
Proposals for Winter: - (See attached schedule) Sale of property proceeds (£85,000) will be received by the Diocese and credited to the commercial side
- Itemised expenditure of £85,000
- Walsingham Building Fund expected stand at a net of £40,000
-
- will be used to pay new chapel costs, balance of Diocesan Loan, cost of Administrator's office at the Shrine
- By next Autumn there will be sufficient to repair Slipper Chapel roof
- Insurance: Except for Falcon House all properties in the village will be regarded as Commercial and those at the Slipper Chapel as Spiritual
p.s. the Diocese will provide a cash loan for the purchase of a new car for the Administrator.
The lady who fell at the Slipper Chapel can only claim if the Diocese is at fault due to poor maintenance. If she tripped though not looking where she was going - bad luck. Need details before informing the Royal.

Toller, Christopher FRICS FSVA ACIArbEnclosed plan with right of way coloured in yellow and the Diocesan land edged in red. The premium should be paid by Eversheds' clients as the Diocese has had use without problem by Canon Hume and the nuns. Orbit Housing Association need the indemnity for their use.
