Councils that Hawkes needs to be very cautious than he is about the path he is treading. Your Deputy Director appointment is not an Executive appointment but one that Fr Birch has made himself. The new Director and the Marist Congregation have to be consulted. Clarifications: 1. cannot endorse proceeding to priesthood; 2. You are a Permanent Deacon with a licence for this Diocese; 3. Only wear the Franciscan habit on very restricted occasions- it is causing confusion.
This may seem hard but it is for your benefit. Feel free to discuss with Canon McBride.

Unfortunately the day clashes with an ordination to the Diaconate i Bury St Edmunds - so cannot attend. Good to invite Mgr McBride as a representative instead. "Hey ho! I wonder how you will get along without a Lady Mayoress."

Knew Claude Fisher for many years and is grieved not to be able to attend his Requiem Mass. Mgr McBride will attend and would like to officiate. Please let it be known that the Bishop could not attend due to important diocesan business previously arranged.

Following their conversation today, Mgr McBride will be getting in touch. Three points:

  1. The Executive's decision regarding the Blessed Sacrament is "ad experimentum" for this season. They will re-think if needed.
  2. Walsingham Statue Honour Guard - see Mgr Stark's letter - decision remains with the Executive.
  3. Will discuss audit with Fr Wilson

For clarity: the Bishop is not a member of the Executive; he thought he'd made that clear from the beginning. Mgr McBride as Vicar General acts in the Bishop's name and that of Fr Peter Wilson. All efforts are to raise funds and channel them into the basic building and basic equipment for the Chapel of Reconciliation. There is no money to finance any other project e.g. the railway track and the organ - we are in a "poverty trap" to some extent.
This should not undermine morale - lesser items come later, if we can't pay for them and consequently lose them, so be it. It is not too late to send an appeal reminder to parish priests.

Mgr Tony Hulme approached the Bishop about being an honorary member of Shrine Council. Need to consult Fr Birch, the Council, the two other Bishops. Already spoken to Canon McBride. Feels there is an obligation to acceded to this.

Bishop is going on holiday and on return on pilgrimage to Lourdes - hence a couple of matters causing him concern to be raised (copy to Mgr McBride)

  1. Wearing of Franciscan habit by Third Order members - John Hawkes, and others
  2. Assistants to the President of the liturgy on the occasion of Solemn Masses at the Chapel of Reconciliation

"... several doctrinal and historical reasons, the right sign should be given to the participating laity of the correct ordering of the church ..."

The Bishop and Mgr McBride were aware of the sensitivity in removing the Blessed Sacrament from the Slipper Chapel and agreed to reconsider if a negative response was forthcoming. However the arrangements he has in mind are based on the Lourdes model and considers Fr Birch's idea as being consistent and tidy but "unrealistic" for Walsingham.

Bishop says he will need Fr Lloyd's help in Blakeney. Concern about Fr Lloyd's eyesight, his inability to drive a car and possibility of feeling isolated in Blakeney. None of the big parishes can absorb a "curate emeritus".
manuscript ps: Do stay and help Peter Allen in Walsingham. Blakeney does need occupancy. Contact VG when it is known that Peter Murphy is returning to Westminster diocese.

Writing as Chairman of the Executive Committee, having read the report form Tony Snelling of Dunlop Heywood. The Shrine should operate within its means and not get into a position of indebtedness to the Diocese in the foreseeable future. This proposal would cost at least £300,000m, which would have to be borrowed and paid for. He recalls saying that funds should be built up for maintenance and hopes his position is clear and that he carries the Administrator and the Shrine Executive with him.

Sure that McBride will guide a priest firmly
Anniversary was a deeply memorable affair thanks to Mgr McBride.
Fr Sketch, letter enclosed, [not present], was let off lightly - the lapse rate at Lowestoft could frighten us to death. Pouring over plans at home is not the right use of resources.

Fr Kerby may seem gruff & unsympathetic - he's not really like that - he possibly did not know how many places the Parish would be assigned. The Vicar General, Mgr. McBride is writing to priests about the selection process. Bishop urges her to add her name and that she won't be the only one with a partner who is not a Catholic.

Part of Northampton Diocesan Travelling Mission - Fr McCormick

Copied onto Travelling Mission headed paper [by Fr McCormick?].
Letter from Bishop Clark to Stephen Lennane of Reepham. Explains the reasons for the closure of the Travelling Mission. Suggest that others could be of help: Sister Maeve (St Louis Convent, Bury St Edmunds) and Canon McBride who has been asked to see how the Diocese can help those in Reepham.
"... we can work our an alternative to the devoted care of Fr McCormick."

The last letter was written in haste; happy to have Fr Trafford, an experienced priest in Beccles; wished wedding at Hoveton to be valid as Canon Roberts serves the chapel, not Fr Whyatt.
John Todhunter: no mention of legal difficulties; he'd implied that the pope wished "fraternise" with CofE and that was why non-Catholics should marry Catholics. Happy to hear Gillingham Hall is secure for the future. Knows nothing about Trust money being connected with the Church and Cemetery.
Gorleston and Ministry Loan: Heard from Fr McBride about joint liability between parishes. If a loan is not required then the diocese could use this but have not yet decided on the matter.
Beccles loan and debt: the return provides for misunderstanding on the nature and amount of debt. If paid off then you are to be congratulated. There is still a need for clarity so the bishop can understand how the parish is situated financially.
