To Miss Preston; £45 cheque received from solicitors in Manchester for distribution to poorer clergy of the Diocese. Lists 11 priests. As Fr Ketterer was the young man, going to be a priest, known to Mrs Gosselin, he has therefore received the larger sum [£2; rest received £2.10]

W E H Bull saw Fr Flynn this week - he is ill with influenza and his nervous system is completely run down. Consider it a personal favour if the Bishop gives his request urgent consideration for Fr Flynn to have two months off for complete rest. Fr Flynn leads a lonely life and this is worse since his sister died in December.
Manuscript annotation: "Answered. as also Ketterer C report annexed"
Need to ensure that they include the points that should be included (e.g. right to dismiss an unsuitable person). Words are known to the Ministry (from one of their documents), Bishop's wish that negotiating "Rules of Management" is done through the Diocesan Schools Commission - aiming to establish a standard set across the country.
Managers will have to be re-appointed when the draft Instrument is Made and Sealed by the Minister. Bishop likes curates to be appointed so they gain experience.
Cathedraticum [annual payment to Bishop] cheque enclosed [not present. £2.10 from Frs Page, Allen, Ketterer, Rigby & Eeles.
manuscript annotation: "Sent receipt. Asked if Fr Flynn and Drage turned up"
Cheque for £2.10 being the Cathedraticum from Fr Rigby, Fr Ketterer, Fr Allen, Fr Page & Canon Eeles. Other claim exemption. Discusses arrangements for masses especially when the doctor considers he can do low masses but is concerned about the long fast - perhaps the Canon could take some liquid nourishment between masses. Fr Flynn was looking well today at the conference. Absentees were Fr Page (with a chill), Fr Allen ( Children's Entertainment) & Fr Drage.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)Death of Mr John Lewis, a choirman, on Tuesday. Saw Fr Ketterer who says he has got over his last attack.
manuscript annotation: "Answered. [?] Jan 29/26"
Delighted to have bishop for both nights if he wishes. Fr Drage has received his Holy Oils via Fr Ketterer.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)For last 3 or 4 weeks Fr Flynn has been at Oxborough and Fr Dnage[?] at Hunstanton. He went to Hunstanton for a wedding but became so ill he could take no part in it. He returned to Oxborough for Sunday but was unable to say Mass, which Fr Ketterer did instead.
Eeles, Charles Rev (1868-1926)Outlines the arrangements for Friday's funeral. Draws a parallel with the funeral of Fr Wrigglesworth when he made arrangements and said mass. Suggests Bishop should stay overnight in Peterborough and then bring Fr Allen, who will be the MC. Fr Ketterer needs to be eased into his new role - suggests that he take on Wisbech for the moment. At Canon Eeles' suggestion a will was written and this will be attended to in due course.
manuscript annotation: "All agreed to. Yes to Peterborough on Thursday for night, will bring Fr Allen along too. Friday a.m."
from Wisbech at 4.30pm: "Bishop of Northampton / Have seen Canon and Doctor Latter / say canon holding his own but / very weak and not out of danger / Page"
manuscript annotation: "wrote to Fr Ketterer be prepared to substitute at K. Lynn under Fr Page's Directions. Also wrote to Page, and to Stokes asking them to examine Ketterer for faculties when he calls. Enclosed faculty paper & oath"
Report describing the parish having fallen vacant upon Canon Eeles' death and possession being taken on 23 November 1926 by Fr Stokes under the authority of Fr Page. Describes the process by which Fr Stokes took possession of the church. Document drawn up and witnessed by the notary, K De Havilland Ollard
Signed by Witnesses: Fr Page & Fr Ketterer
Oath for parish priest to sign, in this case "on taking possession of K. Lynn parish".
Signed by Stokes, Witnesses: Fr Page & Fr Ketterer
Fr Page & Mr Ollard are coming over for the Induction, Fr Ketterer will be the other witness. Need to retrieve belongings from Norwich.
manuscript annotation: "Advised on receipt of Freeland's letter, to come later, as you will be so busy over Bazaar. Other matters that he will feel 'de trop' getting his things together. Also told him the golden rule that once one has left a place, it is [?] overland[?] too often & [?] to omit old bad choices. Nov 20/26."
There is a "tangle" with Fr Ketter legally letting the property from 13 January 1908 for 3 years. Outlines the situation, comments on standing their ground and refusing to pay for others expenditure (but that will mean constraining Mr Cotman's goods) and suggests that a compromise deal with Cotman as "our tenant". He will see the Bishop on Wednesday to discuss.
Manuscript notes in a different hand [Bishop Keating?]:
"Think over these points between now and Wednesday...." [lists a number of questions ]
Accept surrender of lease provided you pay rent due according to agreement with Fr Ketterer. Also letter from Mr F G Cotman stating he will be our tenant from 15 February next and pay £20 per annum rent. No to paying £16.10.00 for repairs.
Tonks, Joseph Rev (1863-1943)Fr Wilson apologies to Bishop for not getting his returns back earlier; the Canon had spoken to him. Fr Wilson asks for advice on the situation that now faces him with regard to the Studio (bought by Mr Pauling at the start of the Mission). Let by Fr Ketterer to Mr Smith, who died in June, for 3 or 5 years at £10 per annum. Mr Smith has sub-let to Mr Cotman for 3 years at £20 a year from last Michaelmas. When Fr Wilson came last February, the rent had not been paid. Mr Smith's affairs were bankrupt and so the offer was 7/- in the £, which was accepted by the creditors. The rent was paid on 1st December. Mr Day made a proposal over the rent but Fr Wilson did not understand what was being said even after several attempts at requesting clarification. The Studio had been let to the County Council for cookery lessons and some expenses have arisen from that with other repairs. Fr Wilson thinks this should all be settled prior to him taking back the lease. Perhaps a letter from the Diocesan Solicitor might elicit a clearer explanation from Mr Day (who "... has a pretty general reputation for sharp practice...").
Wilson, Alfred Rev (-1936)The Studio was let by Fr Ketterer with express or implied Authority and the Agreement has been confirmed by rent being received under it. Mr Smith's £13.10.0 comprises £5 to County Council for some building or fixtures of theirs, and, Sanitary convenience £8.10.0. Mr Day has instructed repairs to the floor, some £2 to £3. He suggests surrender of the lease upon payment of £13.10.0 to Mr Smith's estate. Encloses rough copy of the sub-lease.
Manuscript pencilled annotation: "The Studio, St Ives. I am in receipt of your Letter of 7th instant with copy agreement, & thank you for your courtesy. I will confer with my Committee upon the matter & will write further to you in due course." [draft response by Fr Tonks]
