Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Provides an indication of his complicated arrangements for visiting the area. Apologises for treating everyone shabbily: has to include Gillingham (Mrs Kenyon), Beccles (Fr Campbell), Bungay (Fr MacEvoy), Woodbridge and Wroxham (Traffords) in one visit with no motorcar available.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Suggest Wednesday July 2nd - arriving on the day as have another appointment in the area. Sorry to hear about Dr Helsham, his Jesuit brother gave a poor account of it. Cyril Banham is doing well - have to curb his enthusiasm to keep him within his health compass.
Cary-Elwes, Dudley Charles Rev (1868-1932)Going to Sudbury next week to take on a mission whilst Fr Heptonstall is recuperating abroad. Hopes the Diocese will not be split up as he hopes to learn about it. Helping Fr Campbell preach - likes it. Enjoyed his 3.5 months in Sheringham.
Banham, Cyril Norbert Rev (1887-1963)Working people will get to see a ceremony they have never seen and not likely to see again. Need a supply for Fr Squirrell. Have the four priests required. Will bishop accept hospitality when visiting Beccles? Fr Campbell's letter attached.
Banham, Cyril Norbert Rev (1887-1963)Writing from the Presbytery at Southwold. Motored to Mundesley by sister and husband - went via Norwich and North Walsham - 40 miles in 1 3/4 hours. Report is good - sending it on [not present]. Beccles is full of illness, severe and very infectious. Fr Campbell back from holiday.

Sent £2.4.0 Christmas Crib offering for the bishop to dispose of as he wishes. He apologises for having had Midnight Mass at Gillingham Hall chapel - realises that he should have had a diocesan permission to do so. Has spoken to Mrs T [Todhunter] and Fr Campbell. There were 22 at Holy Communion (Hall family members and staff) no one from Gillingham village attended.
manuscript annotation: "sent money to 'Universe' Miners[?] Fund. Church at Gillingham for Sundays. Hall Chapel only for weekdays. Jan 19/29."
Asks Bishop's permission on Mrs Todhunter's behalf for:
- permission for a Sacristan
- Permission to allow the daughter (Mary, 7 in December 1928) to have her First Confession) after Easter (as is required) to allow preparation for 1st Communion to occur about Corpus Chrisiti
- permission to allow Holy Week service to be held in Gillingham in the "semi-public chapel". Fr Campbell is in favour.
- Mr John Todhunter wishes to arrange a Demonstration for the Emancipation[?] on 23 April- Fr Pillot thinks this inconvenient and better arranged for a diocesan-wide date.

Fr Winifred W Banham SJ writing from St Beuno's College, St Asaph, N Wales. In response to a request of confirmation that faculties are held. The answer is "no" but the diocesan faculties are given whenever they supply to St Benet's and the nuns. He has supplied to 10 different places (sometimes 2 or 3 times) and 2 were in Shrewsbury diocese. If the Bishop decides Fr Banham is not qualified then inform at earliest.

CorrespondentMrs Isabella Alston Chaderton-Johnson (21 Collingham Road, South Kensington, London SW5): Visited Miss Dunder[?] in Huntingdon and drove with her to Exton [Hall, Exton, Rutland] for tea with Lady Gainsborough. Miss D did well and is wonderfully healthy. Since seeing the Bishop in Rome, she went again this Spring for her pilgrimage - it being four years since being received into the church. Just bought a house in Beccles and asks for an introduction letter for the priest there. Looking forward to helping the nuns and being near to the beautiful and dignified Minster.
manuscript annotation: "Answered & sent letter of introduction to Fr Campbell. Oct 26/25"
Currently at Stanbrook seeing her daughter who is a nun in the Abbey. Having spoken to Fr Campbell the notice to Fr Vermuelen has been withdrawn. However he has had a stroke, is in Beccles hospital, and it is too early for a prognosis. Arrangements for a supply at Gillingham Hall had been made.
manuscript annotation: "Answd. June 18/28."
Thanks the Bishop for his sympathy and describes her son, Dickie, sudden collapse after an appendicitis operation into unconsciousness and death. Fr Campbell had initially attended but Fr Allen anointed Dickie and gave the last rites.
