Part of St Benet's Minster Parish, Beccles

Beccles: Happy for this proposal to become a firm arrangement - deal with details later. Note comment that this is still a Downside parish and need to make this clear to avoid a dip in morale. Also, to send in a holiday supply from time to time to help Mgr Hypher.

Bungay: Enquiries have been received about Fr Richard from a Curial Cardinal who may offer him a job in Rome. Suggest Fr Edward Crouzet (55, graduate of Cambridge and Fribourg, linguist, musician, counsellor) who is Chaplain at Cambridge University for 7 years, also, a Downside housemaster for many years.

The notes contain the proposals for the trustees for the Banham £1000 endowment:

  1. The Bishop of Northampton is always a trustee
  2. The Abbot of Downside (or an OSB appointee) is the second for as long as the Beccles remains a Benedictine mission - goes to Northampton Diocese if that ceases
  3. A lay trustee from Beccles congregation in consultation with the Beccles' rector and Bishop of Northampton.
Write to RE Banham, the Abbot of Downside to this effect.

Whilst not stating the circumstance which constrain his deployment of priests in the Diocese, Bishop Clark considers Abbot Fitzgerald Lombard will have an idea. There is need to move Fr Hypher to a more demanding parish and proposes to appoint Fr Adrian Gates as his successor. This does not mean a withdrawal from the 3 year agreement to provide for Beccles. Despite any lobby opposing the change, he considers that Fr Gates will be accepted and supported by the parish.

Nashdom: appeals for support by the Abbot to Archbishop Cardinale, then himself, were refused for reasons given. Though the request might go to the Abbot of Bec next - this is an awkward situation but the appeal which brackets us with Canterbury or York for a widely circulated appeal may be misconstrued - leave it to your judgment.
Gillingham Church: Fr Little of Beccles has written about Gillingham Church (which John Todhunter is in charge of). There is an issue relating to its maintenance and ownership which is highlighted by the new Charities Act. The title deeds are missing - can only find one letter about the cemetery dated 19 July 1929 [see related descriptions link]. Bishop had stopped the holding of the Blessed sacrament at the Chapel and the parish priest offering mass there - quite unauthorised. Now Fr Little doubts the wisdom of offering Sunday Mass. If this stops then what becomes of the Chapel? Need to discuss - in August will be in Norfolk and will see Fr Little and John [Todhunter] then.

Includes [not present] documentation required for Fr Trafford - grateful if he will undertake to hear the Lowestoft nuns confessions.
The management of the Banham Trust is quite constrained and has worked until now - sets out major aspects of the trust. The Bishop recommends that it stays as it is. However he'd be interested to hear anything Mr Coney or the Abbot can come up with.
Wishes him well in his new activity in Liverpool.

Asking for the whereabouts of the deed for the church (Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) and cemetery at Gillingham. Given to understand that the Bishop of Northampton and the Abbot of Downside were owners or Trustees. Mentions two letters held on file [see related descriptions]. Can Mr. Todhunter see the Bishop at Poringland on 18 August?

Rejects Downside Provincial (Abbot H E Moore) suggestion that Beccles district and Diss district should come under one priest at Bungay. Rather the Bishop will keep to the current boundaries - Diss and west of railway line will be Beccles' area. Asks the Abbot to appoint a priest to serve Beccles and start a mission there - may reside at Bungay for now.

Long talk with Fr Trafford about affairs at Beccles school. Doubtful that the Ministry will allow work to proceed as the national economy cannot yet afford it and other priorities exist. Fr Trafford is already approaching the LEA about a teacher appointment.

Advising the Abbot that the Bishop is unable to attend to Diocesan affairs for the next few weeks, hence this letter as reply.
Bishop has been quite clear, i accordance with other Bishops, on the approach to be taken. Firm approval from him for the scheme at Beccles. Covers a range of funding/income issues associated with Beccles parish. Note that Gorleston Catholic Modern Secondary school will have Beccles as a feeder school.
typescript annotation: "Fr Abbot's letter gave the agreed valuation as follows:- Playing field £1260, House and Garden £4,100. All this will be sold to the Authority for £5360. The playground will be retained in the ownership of the Authority. The remainder will be conveyed back to Downside Abbey Beccles School trust. 'It looks as though out of this Beccles will be "clear" about £3000'".
