Bishop is shocked - the area is deprived with widespread responsibilities and he thought it would be an Augustinian priority. Cannot see how to dissuade what must have been a difficult decision. He will leave a decision to his successor - possibly an announcement in Summer with appointments in September 1995.

Seamus Ahearne has said that all fie Augustinian houses and all five Bishops can accommodate the announcement on 3rd Sunday of Advent. Fr Keiran is away on business in Rome, but, the pastoral letter will be read on the 3rd or 4th Sunday of Advent. If the Bishop is going to inform the clergy before then could he place a strict embargo on the information. Not even a whiff of the new here. He has told the Provincial Superior that a new Bishop should be in place within 6 months; if he cannot make appointments then the OSA will do their best to accommodate him. Glad to see Hugh Lindsay's reply to Conor Cruise O'Brien in the Independent - my failure to reply left me uneasy.

Just returned from 2 days of Augustinian Council meetings, the Provincial Superior, Seamus Ahearne, would like him to meet the Bishop to discuss: that the news has already broken in Ireland, Yarmouth parishioners as yet unaware; the intention to withdraw as soon as possible - 3rd Sunday of Advent, if all the Bishops affected agree. Fr Reid will remain to assist the Bishop's successor, if he wishes it, in planning for the future of the parish.
