Thanks the Bishop for his card on the occasion of Fr Kerby's Ordination anniversary. So many years have passed - he still feels liek a beginner.
The planning application has been deferred for a month. Main objection is car parking space and increased congestion outside.

Fr Kerby forgot to tell the Bishop that he is away on a course for Officiating Army Chaplains from 13 to 16 June. So, if the Bishop wishes to speak to him given that he is away and the Ansapohne is being repaired, he should speak to Rev Gardner. The Bishop may wish to make alterations to Fr Kerby's programme.

70+ lady wishes to be absolved and to receive Holy Communion - this Fr Kerby has done in view of "gnadenreiche Zeit" of Christmas. He hopes he has done right in the light of an earlier approval by the Bishop for a similar situation. Fr Kerby asks whether he is right that we are authorised to absolve abortion since it is no longer one of the reserved sins in the New Code. Jonathan Salt's diaconate ordination in Innsbruck, where the ordination will be in Cambridge. Fr Kerby has booked the St Ives Corn Exchange as Salt requested for the reception (on 20 July).

Bishop has agreed to attend St Ives for Confirmation on 14 January 1996. Confirmation Mass is to be held at 2.30pm since 11am Mass in their small church would be crowded and uncomfortable. Offers lunch to the Bishop (manuscript annotation: lunch circled and "Yes Noon"). Fr Kerby has to be at Swavesey for a 4.30pm Mass. Mentions 30 children for Confirmation - under instruction since September, not all attend regularly, parents are good practising Catholics.

Fr Kerby acknowledges the Bishop's permission to give a non-Catholic bride Holy Communion. However, her appreciation is that this is a solemn act but that the bread remains bread and is representative. In the light of this Fr Kerby says that the bride is content to receive "holy communion" from her father (a vicar) whilst the bridegroom receives Holy Communion from Fr Kerby. He awaits the Bishop's decision.
On the Bishop's Visitation at the end of May, will he confirm a few youngsters at Papworth and Willingham as well as at St Ives? It would be an encouragement to both small congregations.

"La veuve" is grateful for the opportunity to speak to the Bishop and that he said Mass for her husband.
Insurance form being sent to Fr Kerby. Mechanic inspected the damage as written a report. New door & rear panel to cost £5-600 with work charges being a further £5-600. Otherwise still drivable, but the door-post saved all from more serious damage. Cheque enclose and will see the Bishop tomorrow in Bury.

Parishioners (Murphys at Somersham) were impressed with your letter on inter-communion. Whilst the Bishop said that Mrs Murphy could approach the altar on occasions, Fr Kerby is puzzled that he can find no references or law on this practice. Fr Kerby would be interested to know how the Church's law ties up with the need for Compassion. Fr Kerby does not wish t deny Holy Communion to those who are right with it, and is interested to understand the "logic" of it.

Just discovered that it is 50th Anniversary of first Mass at Papworth Church (16 June 1932). Would the Bishop come and say Mass there? Thanks the Bishop for copy of his reply to Mrs Griesen, haven't spoken to her as yet. Considers that people find him to be old fashioned but tries to be adaptable. Things going smoothly, nearly finished visiting all in St Ives, will start in villages.

Ad clerum states Confirmation now only for 14+ age group. But some in the parish are ready for 12+ and waiting for it. Mothers show signs of disquiet. Fr Kerby understands that at the last Ministry of Priests is was said that the bishop would confirm those under this age if in preparation for Confirmation currently. On 24th May would the bishop allow this concession?

Fr Kerby acknowledges the "amazing" situation and states that he is taking steps to help and achieve what has been requested. Fr Kerby says that the difficulties identified refer to the "Irish stand-in priest" in Ely 20 years ago, and not to him. Fr Kerby plan is to contact Eugene for a convalidation, he proposes to shrive, housle and anoint the man and give a Papal Blessing all at once, assuming that the Bishop has granted a santanio "in pectore".

Deacon J Gardner's death has brought sympathy from the Bishop. Fr j Drury is able to come for the funeral. Fr Kerby says Deacon Gardner was loved by many people and will be greatly missed. Fr Kerby looks forward to the ordination of the new Deacon, Terry McCarthy and that of John Salt much sooner.
H U von Balthasar is to become a Cardinal - mention of his (heavy) writings - excellent stuff but hard work.

Thanking Bishop for dealing with Padre Pio matter. Lucian, Romanian seminarian at Oscott, wants to take a 1 year M Phil at Birmingham University. Not being an "EC" student, the course fees are £6000 and the college will only pay £2000. Lucian's efforts to gain additional funding have not worked. Fr Kerby, considering St Ives is well off, asks if they could pay £2000 to assist? This degree would help Lucian in Romania as he'd be qualified to teach.

Thanks the Bishop for the card marking the 34 years since Fr Kerby's ordination. All well during Holy Week & Easter - Sunday Masses particularly full - a good core of people who have the interests of the parish very much at heart. Thanks to the ladies, the Church looked splendid on Easter morning with a great amount of flower arrangements. Apologises for not providing warm water, soap and a towel - will do better next time - in October.

Fr Kerby is looking forward to meeting James Fyfe. He has written to the South American couple explaining the situation and to say they are welcome to use the front room in the Presbytery, if they wish to have somewhere to stay. Lucian ?, the Romanian is back in Romania and is waiting for his M Phil results from Birmingham University. He is still not ordained, his bishop is taking exception to him getting married, despite being of the Eastern rite.
